Abstract
OBJECTIVE Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based approach to enhance patients' motivation and is increasingly in demand in medical practice. Online teaching methods offer advantages to train health care professionals, but only very few studies examined whether MI-specific interviewing skills (""MI-skills""), and especially MIspecific attitudes (the "MI-spirit"), can be taught online and whether learning gains differ from those in face-to-face courses. This study compared the effects of 7 h of basic training for experienced general practitioners (GP) in either an online or a traditional face-to-face format with a non-trained control group. METHODS "MI-skills" and "MI-spirit" were measured in a prospective analysis in 49 experienced GPs before and one week after training RESULTS: An ANOVA on gain-scores demonstrated significant differences between groups in both MI-specific skills (VASE-R, p = 0.006) and "MIspirit" (MIKAT, p = 0.029; HRQ, p < 0.001) from pre- to posttest. Post-hoc comparisons revealed significant improvement only in the training groups (VASE-R, p < 0.001; MIKAT, p = 0.014 for online, p = 0.003 for face-to-face; HRQ, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The results suggest similar effects of both online and face-to-face training of "MI-skills" and "MI-spirit" to GPs. PRACTICE IMPLICATION Online learning opportunities should be integrated in MIT programs for general practitioners where appropriate.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oral hygiene is a crucial factor in oral health, especially in children. To increase the awareness of oral care behaviour among children, oral care motivation plays a critical role in daily dental practices. Therefore, this cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the current oral hygiene status and evaluate the association between oral care motivation and oral hygiene index in 7-9-year-old children at Primary School in Hanoi, Vietnam. METHODS Clinical examinations were performed on 200 randomly selected children to assess the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S). Face-to-face interviews were applied to record students' intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for oral care through a questionnaire, which consisted of questions regarding demographic characteristics and oral care motivation. Data were analyzed using STATA 15.0 software and a p-value < 0.05 was statistically significant. RESULTS The mean OHI-S score was 2.48 ± 0.72. Good and fair oral hygiene were observed in 7.5 % and 66 % of participants, respectively. Students' motivation for dental care was predominantly extrinsic, with a mean score of 15.87 ± 1.322. Higher motivation in dental care is statistically significantly associated with oral hygiene index score (Coef=-0.27). CONCLUSION These results indicate that students with intrinsic motivation exhibit better oral hygiene practices. Consequently, strengthening oral health educational programs in primary schools based on intrinsic motivation could be helped improve the oral hygiene status and oral care behaviours of children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Questionnaires designed to test knowledge and self-perception can be valuable tools for diagnosing a dentist's understanding of the management and administration of a practice. The objective of this study was to create and authenticate a questionnaire for assessing dentists' self-perception on oral healthcare management developed from discussions with experts in this field. MATERIAL AND METHODS In order to create and verify a questionnaire survey, a cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study was carried out. Participants' personal information and 31 statements across four categories made up the final questionnaire form. The answers to the questionnaire were in the form of a Likert scale. After refining the initial version, a total of 36 interviews were conducted at dental offices to verify the validity. For the Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), we used the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) index, the Bartlett sphericity test, and also Cronbach alpha coefficient for the validity of the questionnaire. RESULTS The accuracy of the instrument was measured by intrarater and interrater reliability. For the EFA, all the communalities exceeded the threshold of 0.05. With a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.898, the questionnaire has sufficient internal consistency. CONCLUSIONS The questionnaire demonstrates robust reliability and validity, thereby affirming its suitability for its intended purpose.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) has gained attention as one of the minimally invasive modalities to manage ECC although it causes black staining of treated carious lesions. A possible affordable alternative may be Sodium Fluoride (NaF) varnish combined with good oral hygiene promoted by parental Motivational Interviewing (MI). The study compared the effectiveness of 38% SDF solution and 5% NaF varnish supported by parental MI in arresting ECC. MATERIALS AND METHODS Children aged ≤ 4 years old with at least one active carious lesion (ICDAS score ≥ 3) were randomly assigned to treatment by a single application of 38% SDF solution or a single application of 5% NaF varnish supported by two MI sessions for mothers at baseline and after three months. Chi-Squared test was used to compare groups and multilevel logistic regression analysis was used to assess the effect of the interventions on ECC arrest adjusting for confounders. The interaction between the type of intervention and baseline lesion severity, moderate (ICDAS 3/4) or advanced (ICDAS 5/6), was also assessed. RESULTS The study included 165 children with 949 active lesions. After 6 months, there were no significant differences between SDF and NaF/MI groups in overall caries arrest (63.7% and 58.1%, p = 0.08), and in moderate lesions (72.9% and 69.6%, p = 0.52). However, in advanced lesions, the arrest rate was significantly higher in the SDF than the NaF/ MI group (60.3% and 50.0%, P = 0.01). Multilevel multiple logistic regression showed no significant differences between the interventions (AOR = 1.56, P = 0.27) with significant interaction between the intervention and baseline lesion severity (p < 0.001). Moderate lesions treated with SDF (AOR = 3.69, P = 0.008) or NaF/MI (AOR = 3.32, P < 0.001) had significantly higher odds of arrest than advanced lesions treated with NaF/ MI with no difference between advanced lesions treated with SDF or NaF/ MI (AOR = 1.85, P = 0.155) in arrest rate. CONCLUSION NaF/ MI can be an alternative to SDF in arresting advanced and moderate ECC lesions without staining with stronger effect on moderate lesions (ICDAS 3/4). TRIAL REGISTRATION The trial was retrospectively registered at clinicaltrial.gov registry (#NCT05761041) on 9/3/2023.

Abstract
Several studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of motivational interviewing (MI) in reducing sexual risk behaviors. However, limited information is available on the acceptability of brief MI among men who have sex with men (MSM) in poor resource settings like sub-Saharan Africa. The objective of this study was to assess the views of MSM about the benefits and utility of brief MI (bMI) in changing their risky behavior. A qualitative study among men who have sex with men (MSM) who were enrolled in a longitudinal observational study between December 2021 and May 2023. The setting was in Tshwane North and participants were scheduled for baseline, 6-month, and 12-month visits. All participants received 20 min one-on-one face-to-face brief motivational interview (bMI) sessions during their follow-up visits. At month 12, an exit interview was conducted with consenting conveniently sampled participants (n = 23) who had completed all scheduled visits and received three bMI sessions. The findings indicated that the most recalled conversation was related to multiple sexual partners, having sex under the influence of alcohol, and MSM learned more about sexually transmitted diseases. Many expressed being comfortable with the sessions because the counselor was respectful and non-judgmental. Most found the bMI sessions to have a positive impact on changing and reducing risky sexual behaviors, particularly it reportedly increased their use of condoms and reduced the number of multiple partners. MSM found the bMI to be useful and acceptable in reducing sexual risk behaviors among MSM.

Abstract
Background: Health coaching-based interventions can support behaviour change to improve oral health. This scoping review aims to identify key characteristics of health coaching-based interventions for oral health promotion. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews checklist and the Joanna Briggs Institute manual for evidence synthesis were used in this review. A search strategy using medical subject heading terms and keywords was developed and applied to search the following databases: CINAHL, Ovid, PubMed, Cochrane Library and Scopus. Thematic analysis was used to synthesise the data. Results: Twenty-three studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. These studies were predominantly based on health coaching and motivational interviewing interventions applied to oral health promotion. The following are the characteristics of health coaching-based interventions extracted from themes of the included studies: (a) Health professionals should be trained on the usage of motivational interviewing/health coaching interventions; (b) oral health professionals should acquire motivational techniques in their practice to engage patients and avoid criticisms during the behaviour change process; (c) routine brief motivational interviewing/health coaching intervention sessions should be introduced in dental clinics; (d) traditional oral health education methods should be supplemented with individually tailored communication; and (e) for cost-effectiveness purposes, motivational interviewing/health coaching strategies should be considered. Conclusions: This scoping review reveals that health coaching-based techniques of health coaching and motivational interviewing can significantly impact oral health outcomes and behaviour change and can improve oral health professional–patient communication. This calls for the use of health coaching-based techniques by dental teams in community and clinical settings. This review highlights gaps in the literature, suggesting the need for more research on health coaching-based intervention strategies for oral health promotion.

Abstract
Objective To investigate periodontal patients' perceived importance, interest and self-efficacy of oral hygiene (OH) behaviors. Methods Secondary outcomes from a randomized single-site examiner-blinded clinical trial investigated the control group (traditional oral hygiene instructions) and the test group (brief motivational interviewing) over four time points. Analyses were performed using R version 4.1.1. Results Sixty participants were eligible, and 58 completed the pre and post questionnaires for a 97% response rate. Importance was higher in the test group for good oral health and daily oral self-care (4.86 vs. 4.80). Interest in taking care of teeth and gums and changing a homecare routine was higher in the test group (4.89). Self-efficacy was higher in the test group for taking care of teeth and gums (4.18 vs. 4.07), making a change to improve oral health (4.29 vs. 4.27), and maintaining a change long-term (4.32 vs. 4.17). Statistical significance for self-efficacy was achieved for maintaining an OH behavior long-term. Conclusion A brief motivational interviewing intervention was superior to enhance perceived importance, interest and self-efficacy of oral hygiene behaviors. Innovation Contrary to previous motivational interviewing research, this study used a novel approach to evaluate MI-fidelity to determine the most effective MI strategies to support self-efficacy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study examines undergraduate dental students' perceptions of their self-confidence in communicating with patients and paradental staff. MATERIALS AND METHODS A survey questionnaire was designed based on a literature review and input from students and academic staff relating to clinical communication skills with 19 questions across 7 domains. Through email, a convenience sampling of undergraduate students were invited to complete the survey questionnaire. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the responses was performed with a thematic analysis to the open-ended questions. RESULTS In total, 102 students were surveyed from 4 years of students with a 36.6% response rate. Students reported some areas of low confidence across various communication domains, in particular, building rapport, behavioural change, management of patient expectation and breaking bad news. Students reported insufficient confidence and knowledge in specialist clinical areas, layperson terms and success rates and longevity of treatment items when communicating with patients. Information sheets and visual aids such as models or photos were suggested by students to be helpful in patient communication. Students also reported challenges in communication with nurses when they might challenge or change their clinical decisions in front of their patients. CONCLUSION Our study reveals areas of low confidence among undergraduate dental students in communication towards patients and paradental staff. Barriers and challenges have been identified with an action plan suggested accordingly. There is a need for additional training in the form of learning content and communications experiences, and channels of communications for undergraduate students.

Abstract
Dental student training in clinical communication skills and behavioral aspects of treatment are lauded as clinically meaningful in the dental education literature. However, many dental school curricula still only provide didactic, one-time coursework with multiple choice examination assessment and little or no student skill-activating activities. This article aims to review literature relevant to optimizing clinical communication and behavioral skills in dental education. The review summarizes findings of several relevant reviews and usable models to focus on four themes: (1) special characteristics of dentistry relevant to communication skill needs, (2) essential components of dental student learning of communications skills, (3) clinical consultation guides or styles and (4) optimal curricular structure for communication learning effectiveness. Contexts of communications in the dental chair differ from medical and other allied health professions, given the current mostly dentist-dominant and patient-passive relationships. Patient-centered communication should be trained. Dental students need more practical learning in active listening and patient-centered skills including using role-play, videotaping and ultimately, real patient training. Medical consultation guides are often unwieldy and impractical in many dental contexts, so a shortened guide is proposed. Communication skills need to be learned and taught with the same rigor as other core dental skills over the entire course of the dental curriculum.

Abstract
Patient adherence to removable retainer wear is integral to the long-term success of retention regimes. We discuss the factors influencing removable retainer wear, the methods of gauging wear levels, approaches to enhance adherence and the quality of online available information concerning retention. The potential value of patient involvement in approaches to retention within a shared decision-making framework and motivational interviewing are also highlighted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental caries (tooth decay) in children is a worldwide public health problem. The leading cause of caries is poor oral hygiene behaviours and the frequent consumption of sugary foods and drinks. Changing oral health habits requires effective behaviour change conversations. The dental practice provides an opportunity for dental teams to explore with parents the oral health behaviours they undertake for their young children (0-5 years old). However, evidence suggests that dental teams need further support, training and resources. Therefore, "Strong Teeth" (an oral health intervention) was co-developed to help dental teams undertake these behaviour change conversations. The current paper will explore the acceptability of the "Strong Teeth" intervention with dental teams and parents of children aged 0-5 years old using multiple datasets (interviews, focus groups and dental team member diaries) METHODS: Following the delivery of the "Strong Teeth" intervention, qualitative interviews with parents and focus groups with dental team members were undertaken. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and analysed using a theoretical framework of acceptability. The self-reported dental team diaries supplemented the interviews and focus groups and were analysed using framework analysis. RESULTS Four themes were developed: (1) integration within the dental practice; (2) incorporating the Oral-B electric toothbrush; (3) facilitating discussions and demonstrations; and (4) the practicality of the Disney Magic Timer app. Overall, the "Strong Teeth" intervention was acceptable to parents and dental teams. Parents felt the Oral-B electric toothbrush was a good motivator; however, the Disney Magic Timer app received mixed feedback on how well it could be used effectively in the home setting. Findings suggest that the intervention was more acceptable as a "whole team approach" when all members of the dental practice willingly participated. CONCLUSIONS There are limited studies that use a robust process evaluation to measure the acceptability of an intervention. The use of the theoretical framework of acceptability helped identify aspects of the intervention that were positive and helped identify the interventions areas for enhancement moving forwards. Future modifications include enhanced whole team approach training to optimise acceptability to all those involved. TRIAL REGISTRATION ISRCTN Register, (ISRCTN10709150).

Abstract
Motivational interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based approach to resolving patient ambivalence to change. MI techniques can be effectively used by dentists in assessing and managing substance use risk and may add minimal time to the patient interview. Although MI's greatest utility has been in the area of improving general oral hygiene in order to reduce caries and other preventable conditions, its use in addressing controlled substance risk is well established in other health care disciplines. These techniques do not require special training in mental health assessment and can be effectively used by dentists and dental hygienists.
