Abrasion Behaviour of Different Charcoal Toothpastes When Using Electric Toothbrushes

The interplay between toothbrush stiffness and charcoal-containing dentifrice on the development of enamel topography changes

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to investigate the in vitro effect of a charcoal-containing dentifrice with different toothbrush stiffness on enamel.

METHODS

Four main groups were applied: distilled water, conventional fluoridated toothpaste (Colgate® Total® 12 Clean Mint Toothpaste), charcoal toothpaste (Colgate® Total® Charcoal Toothpaste) and whitening toothpaste (Colgate Total® Advanced Whitening Toothpaste). Three subgroups for each toothpaste were further included according to the toothbrush bristles' stiffness (soft, medium, and hard). Enamel specimens were subjected to 1,250 and 2,500 cycles of brushing using toothbrushing simulation machine. The average surface roughness change (ΔRa) in nanometer (nm) was measured to estimate the changes following the brushing simulation model. Two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests analyzed the data.

RESULTS

The type of toothpaste and the bristles' stiffness were determinant factors in increasing the ΔRa value (P = < 0.05). Generally, charcoal and whitening toothpastes with medium and hard bristles yielded higher ΔRa than fluoridated toothpaste and smooth bristles. Following 1,250 cycles of brushing simulation, charcoal toothpaste did not increase the enamel roughness compared to the controls. However, in prolonged brushing via 2,500 cycles of brushing simulation, using bristles with soft stiffness revealed that charcoal toothpaste was associated with increased surface roughness (55.86 ± 41.18 nm), which was statistically significant (P = 0.024) compared to the negative control. Using bristles with medium stiffness showed that the whitening (68.23 ± 48.58 nm) and charcoal (73.62 ± 34.66 nm) toothpastes significantly (P = < 0.05) increased the enamel roughness compared to the conventional toothpaste (36.53 ± 22.56 nm). There was no significant difference among the groups when brushes with hard bristles were used, as all the groups revealed increased enamel roughness.

CONCLUSION

The use of charcoal and whitening toothpastes increased enamel roughness, particularly with long-term use. The effect of bristle stiffness on enamel roughness was found to vary depending on the type of toothpaste used.

In Vitro Evaluation of Remineralization Potential of Five Toothpastes on Soft Drink-Eroded Human Enamel and Dentine

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the potential remineralization of enamel and dentine erosion lesions after the application of five different toothpastes.

METHODOLOGY

A total of 104 enamel and dentine samples were prepared from maxillary third molars. Each group was divided according to the toothpaste application mode (topical = 56; brushing = 48) and the toothpaste used seven topical groups and six brushing groups (n = 8). The groups included negative control (NC), positive control (PC), Sensodyne Pronamel (SP), Regenerate (R), Regenerate with boosting serum (R+), Colgate Duraphat 5000 (CD), and tooth mousse (TM).

RESULTS

The statistical analysis showed significant surface microhardness (SMH) change. All enamel groups showed a significant decrease in SMH compared to NC for both application modes. However, no significance was recorded between test groups. Similar results were observed between dentine groups and their relevant controls for both application modes, except brushed R and R+ groups, which were insignificant to their NC. For topical groups, TM showed a significant increase in SMH. While R and R+ showed lower loss than SP and CD.

CONCLUSIONS

All tested agents offered a degree of remineralization in both enamel and dentine with no significant difference between agents in enamel groups while R, R+, and TM offered better results in dentine groups.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

 For dentine groups, similar findings were observed with superior tooth surface protection with the application of TM over other agents. Tooth surface remineralization was achieved when agents were either applied topically or brushed over the surface.

Comparative Analysis of Plaque Removal and Wear between Electric-Mechanical and Bioelectric Toothbrushes

Effective oral care is important for maintaining a high quality of life. Therefore, plaque control can prevent the development and recurrence of periodontitis. Brushing with a toothbrush and toothpaste is a common way to remove plaque; however, excessive brushing or brushing with abrasive toothpaste can cause wear and tear on the dental crown. Hence, we aimed to quantitatively compare the plaque-removal efficiency and tooth wear of toothbrushes using the bioelectric effect (BE) with those of electric-mechanical toothbrushes. To generate the BE signal, an electronic circuit was developed and embedded in a toothbrush. Further, typodonts were coated with cultured artificial plaques and placed in a brushing simulator. A toothpaste slurry was applied, and the typodonts were eluted with tap water after brushing. The plaques of the typodonts were captured, and the images were quantified. For the tooth wear experiment, polymethyl methacrylate disk resin blocks were brushed twice a day, and the thickness of the samples was measured. Subsequently, statistical differences between the experimental toothbrushes and typical toothbrushes were analyzed. The BE toothbrush had a higher plaque-removal efficiency and could minimize tooth wear. This study suggests that the application of BE may be a new solution for oral care.

The Gloss Retention of Esthetic Restorations Following Simulated Brushing with Charcoal Oral Products: An In-Vitro Study

AIM

To assess the gloss and gloss retention of two esthetic restorative materials after brushing with a charcoal-infused toothbrush and activated charcoal toothpaste compared to their standard counterparts in all possible combinations.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this study,104 disc-shaped specimens were prepared, 52 from each of the two materials: Beautifil II LS composite resin (Giomer) and Fuji II LC resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI). Specimens of each material were divided into 4 groups (n = 13) according to the tested brushing procedure: group A-standard toothbrush + standard non-whitening toothpaste (S-S), group B-standard toothbrush + activated charcoal toothpaste (S-CH), group C-charcoal-infused toothbrush + standard non-whitening toothpaste (CH-S), and group D-charcoal-infused toothbrush + activated-charcoal toothpaste (CH-CH). Gloss was recorded using a gloss meter initially and after each brushing protocol. The data were statistically analyzed with two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD post hoc tests using SPSS® v.27 software at 5% significance level.

RESULTS

Beautifil II LS showed the highest gloss values after brushing in group D (44 ± 3.9), which was not significantly different from its initial value (46.1 ± 1.8), followed by groups A (32.2 ± 4), B (23.2 ± 3.6), and C (22.7 ± 3.9), while Fuji II LC showed its highest gloss values after brushing in groups D (16.6 ± 3.7) and a (15.4 ± 8.7), followed by groups C (10.9 ± 6) and B (4.4 ± 2.5), all were significantly lower than their respective initial gloss values.

CONCLUSION

The gloss of Giomer and RMGI reduced significantly following the brushing with the tested brushing procedures except for the Giomer group brushed with a combination of charcoal-infused toothbrush and activated-charcoal toothpaste.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The brushing using a combination of charcoal-infused toothbrush and activated-charcoal toothpaste is recommended for the gloss retention of Beautifil II LS restorations. Abrasion Behavior of Different Charcoal Toothpastes on Human Dentin When Using Electric Toothbrushes

The aim of this study was to investigate abrasion on human dentin after brushing with activated charcoal toothpastes. A self-designed brushing machine was used to brush five groups (Group A: Water, Group B: Sensodyne Pro Schmelz, Group C: Splat Blackwood, Group D: Curaprox Black is White, and Group E: Prokudent Black Brilliant) with electrically powered toothbrushes for 4 h. The abrasive dentin wear was calculated using profilometry data. Furthermore, thermogravimetric analyses and scanning electron microscopy were used to analyze the composition of the toothpastes. Mean dentin loss by brushing were (71 ± 28) µm (Splat Blackwood), (44 ± 16) µm (Curaprox Black is White), (38 ± 13) µm (Prokudent Black Brilliant), (28 ± 14) µm (Sensodyne Pro Schmelz), and (28 ± 13) µm (Water). Groups A/B/D/E and group C each lie in one subset, which is statistically different from the other subset according to a post hoc Tukey test (p = 0.05). Within the limitations, it can be concluded that the content of activated charcoal in charcoal toothpastes had little influence on the observed abrasive behavior, although one of the charcoal toothpastes showed the highest abrasion on dentin.
