Temperature fluctuations in mesoscopic systems

Temperature is a fundamental concept in thermodynamics. In macroscopic thermodynamics, systems possess their own intrinsic temperature which equals the reservoir temperature when they equilibrate. In stochastic thermodynamics for simple systems at the microscopic level, thermodynamic quantities other than temperature (a deterministic parameter of the reservoir) are stochastic. To bridge the disparity in the perspectives about temperature between the micro- and macroregimes, we assign a generic mesoscopic N-body system an intrinsic fluctuating temperature T in this work. We simplify the complicated dynamics of numerous particles to one stochastic differential equation with respect to T, where the noise term accounts for finite-size effects arising from random energy transfer between the system and the reservoir. Our analysis reveals that these fluctuations make the extensive quantities (in the thermodynamic limit) deviate from being extensive. Moreover, we derive finite-size corrections, characterized by heat capacity of the system, to the Jarzynski equality. A possible violation of the principle of maximum work that scales with N^{-1} is also discussed. Additionally, we examine the impact of temperature fluctuations in a finite-size Carnot engine. We show that irreversible entropy production resulting from the temperature fluctuations of the working substance diminishes the average efficiency of the cycle as η_{C}-〈η〉∼N^{-1}, highlighting the unattainability of the Carnot efficiency η_{C} for mesoscopic heat engines even under the quasistatic limit. Our general framework paves the way for further exploration of nonequilibrium thermodynamics and the corresponding finite-size effects in a mesoscopic regime.

Self-Consistent Stochastic Dynamics for Finite-Size Networks of Spiking Neurons

Despite the huge number of neurons composing a brain network, ongoing activity of local cell assemblies is intrinsically stochastic. Fluctuations in their instantaneous rate of spike firing ν(t) scale with the size of the assembly and persist in isolated networks, i.e., in the absence of external sources of noise. Although deterministic chaos due to the quenched disorder of the synaptic couplings underlies this seemingly stochastic dynamics, an effective theory for the network dynamics of a finite assembly of spiking neurons is lacking. Here, we fill this gap by extending the so-called population density approach including an activity- and size-dependent stochastic source in the Fokker-Planck equation for the membrane potential density. The finite-size noise embedded in this stochastic partial derivative equation is analytically characterized leading to a self-consistent and nonperturbative description of ν(t) valid for a wide class of spiking neuron networks. Power spectra of ν(t) are found in excellent agreement with those from detailed simulations both in the linear regime and across a synchronization phase transition, when a size-dependent smearing of the critical dynamics emerges.

Cell motility as an energy minimization process

The dynamics of active matter driven by interacting molecular motors has a nonpotential structure at the local scale. However, we show that there exists a quasipotential effectively describing the collective self-organization of the motors propelling a cell at a continuum active gel level. Such a model allows us to understand cell motility as an active phase transition problem between the static and motile steady-state configurations that minimize the quasipotential. In particular, both configurations can coexist in a metastable fashion and a small stochastic disorder in the gel is sufficient to trigger an intermittent cell dynamics where either static or motile phases are more probable, depending on which state is the global minimum of the quasipotential.

Transverse Density Fluctuations around the Ground State Distribution of Counterions near One Charged Plate: Stochastic Density Functional View

We consider the Dean–Kawasaki (DK) equation of overdamped Brownian particles that forms the basis of the stochastic density functional theory. Recently, the linearized DK equation has successfully reproduced the full Onsager theory of symmetric electrolyte conductivity. In this paper, the linear DK equation is applied to investigate density fluctuations around the ground state distribution of strongly coupled counterions near a charged plate, focusing especially on the transverse dynamics along the plate surface. Consequently, we find a crossover scale above which the transverse density dynamics appears frozen and below which diffusive behavior of counterions can be observed on the charged plate. The linear DK equation provides a characteristic length of the dynamical crossover that is similar to the Wigner–Seitz radius used in equilibrium theory for the 2D one-component plasma, which is our main result. Incidentally, general representations of longitudinal dynamics vertical to the plate further suggest the existence of advective and electrical reverse-flows; these effects remain to be quantitatively investigated.

The Generalized Stochastic Smoluchowski Equation

We study the dynamics of a system of overdamped Brownian particles governed by the generalized stochastic Smoluchowski equation associated with a generalized form of entropy and involving a long-range potential of interaction [P.H. Chavanis, Entropy 17, 3205 (2015)]. We first neglect fluctuations and provide a macroscopic description of the system based on the deterministic mean field Smoluchowski equation. We then take fluctuations into account and provide a mesoscopic description of the system based on the stochastic mean field Smoluchowski equation. We establish the main properties of this equation and derive the Kramers escape rate formula, giving the lifetime of a metastable state, from the theory of instantons. We relate the properties of the generalized stochastic Smoluchowski equation to a principle of maximum dissipation of free energy. We also discuss the connection with the dynamical density functional theory of simple liquids.

Bose-Einstein-like condensation in scalar active matter with diffusivity edge

Due to their remarkable properties, systems that exhibit self-organization of their components resulting from intrinsic microscopic activity have been extensively studied in the last two decades. In a generic class of active matter, the interactions between the active components are represented via an effective density-dependent diffusivity in a mean-field single-particle description. Here, a class of scalar active matter is proposed by incorporating a diffusivity edge into the dynamics: when the local density of the system surpasses a critical threshold, the diffusivity vanishes. The effect of the diffusivity edge is studied under the influence of an external potential, which introduces the ability to control the behavior of the system by changing an effective temperature, which is defined in terms of the single-particle diffusivity and mobility. At a critical effective temperature, a system that is trapped by a harmonic potential is found to undergo a condensation transition, which manifests formal similarities to Bose-Einstein condensation.
