Transport and Energetic Properties of a Ring of Interacting Spins Coupled to Heat Baths

Heat current magnification in classical and quantum spin networks

We investigate heat current magnification (CM) due to asymmetry in the number of spins in two-branched classical as well as quantum spin systems that are kept between two heat baths at different temperatures. We study the classical Ising-like spin models using Q2R and Creutz cellular automaton dynamics. We show that just the difference in the number of spins is not enough and some other source of asymmetry like unequal spin-spin interaction strengths in the upper and lower branches is required for heat CM. We also provide a suitable physical motivation for CM along with ways to control and manipulate it. We then extend this study to a quantum system with modified Heisenberg XXZ interaction and preserved magnetization. Interestingly, in this case, just the asymmetry in the number of spins in the branches is enough to achieve heat CM. We observe that the onset of CM is accompanied by a dip in the total heat current flowing through the system. We then discuss how the observed CM characteristics can be attributed to the intersection of nondegenerate energy levels, population inversion, and atypical magnetization trends as a function of the asymmetry parameter in the Heisenberg XXZ Hamiltonian. Finally we use the concept of ergotropy to support our findings.

Heat Modulation on Target Thermal Bath via Coherent Auxiliary Bath

We study a scheme of thermal management where a three-qubit system assisted with a coherent auxiliary bath (CAB) is employed to implement heat management on a target thermal bath (TTB). We consider the CAB/TTB being ensemble of coherent/thermal two-level atoms (TLAs), and within the framework of collision model investigate the characteristics of steady heat current (also called target heat current (THC)) between the system and the TTB. It demonstrates that with the help of the quantum coherence of ancillae the magnitude and direction of heat current can be controlled only by adjusting the coupling strength of system-CAB. Meanwhile, we also show that the influences of quantum coherence of ancillae on the heat current strongly depend on the coupling strength of system—CAB, and the THC becomes positively/negatively correlated with the coherence magnitude of ancillae when the coupling strength below/over some critical value. Besides, the system with the CAB could serve as a multifunctional device integrating the thermal functions of heat amplifier, suppressor, switcher and refrigerator, while with thermal auxiliary bath it can only work as a thermal suppressor. Our work provides a new perspective for the design of multifunctional thermal device utilizing the resource of quantum coherence from the CAB.

Proposal of a Computational Approach for Simulating Thermal Bosonic Fields in Phase Space

When a quantum field is in contact with a thermal bath, the vacuum state of the field may be generalized to a thermal vacuum state, which takes into account the thermal noise. In thermo field dynamics, this is realized by doubling the dimensionality of the Fock space of the system. Interestingly, the representation of thermal noise by means of an augmented space is also found in a distinctly different approach based on the Wigner transform of both the field operators and density matrix, which we pursue here. Specifically, the thermal noise is introduced by augmenting the classical-like Wigner phase space by means of Nosé–Hoover chain thermostats, which can be readily simulated on a computer. In this paper, we illustrate how this may be achieved and discuss how non-equilibrium quantum thermal distributions of the field modes can be numerically simulated.

Heat current rectification in segmented XXZ chains

We study the rectification of heat current in an XXZ chain segmented in two parts. We model the effect of the environment with Lindblad heat baths. We show that in our system, rectification is large for strong interactions in half of the chain and if one bath is at a cold enough temperature. For the numerically accessible chain lengths, we observe that the rectification increases with the system size. We gain insight into the rectification mechanism by studying two-time correlations in the steady state. The presence of interactions also induces a strong nonlinear response to the temperature difference, resulting in superlinear and negative differential conductance regimes.
