Optimal Power and Efficiency of Multi-Stage Endoreversible Quantum Carnot Heat Engine with Harmonic Oscillators at the Classical Limit

Vuilleumier refrigerators are devices which provide cooling power by using heat from a source at a temperature above the ambient. This feature makes Vuilleumier refrigerators particularly useful in situations where waste heat is abundant but electrical energy is scarce even as auxiliary operating power. For an operation by heat only with no need of auxiliary power, the Vuilleumier refrigerators must be designed in such a way that the mechanical losses occurring during operation are compensated by power gained from pressure differences. Here, we study the optimal design of such a device with heat-only operation maximizing the cooling power.

Optimized Cooling Power of a Vuilleumier Refrigerator with Limited Regeneration

Vuilleumier refrigerators provide cooling power by utilizing a heat source at temperatures above the ambient. This is particularly helpful in situations where waste heat is available and other power sources are limited. Vuilleumier refrigerators come in different technical configurations; here we analyze the thermodynamic performance of a configuration utilizing two displacer pistons with integrated regenerators. More specifically, we optimize the cooling power by optimizing the piston movement for a range of operation speeds. The optimization is based on the AS motion class for cyclic dynamics and uses an endoreversible model for the refrigerator. Our focus is on the influence of the regeneration extent present, and we find performance gains of about 17% for high regeneration extent and of about 28% for lower regeneration extent.

A Class of Reduced-Order Regenerator Models

We present a novel class of reduced-order regenerator models that is based on Endoreversible Thermodynamics. The models rest upon the idea of an internally reversible (perfect) regenerator, even though they are not limited to the reversible description. In these models, the temperatures of the working gas that alternately streams out on the regenerator’s hot and cold sides are defined as functions of the state of the regenerator matrix. The matrix is assumed to feature a linear spatial temperature distribution. Thus, the matrix has only two degrees of freedom that can, for example, be identified with its energy and entropy content. The dynamics of the regenerator is correspondingly expressed in terms of balance equations for energy and entropy. Internal irreversibilities of the regenerator can be accounted for by introducing source terms to the entropy balance equation. Compared to continuum or nodal regenerator models, the number of degrees of freedom and numerical effort are reduced considerably. As will be shown, instead of the obvious choice of variables energy and entropy, if convenient, a different pair of variables can be used to specify the state of the regenerator matrix and formulate the regenerator’s dynamics. In total, we will discuss three variants of this endoreversible regenerator model, which we will refer to as ES, EE, and EEn-regenerator models.

Performance Analysis and Optimization for Irreversible Combined Carnot Heat Engine Working with Ideal Quantum Gases

An irreversible combined Carnot cycle model using ideal quantum gases as a working medium was studied by using finite-time thermodynamics. The combined cycle consisted of two Carnot sub-cycles in a cascade mode. Considering thermal resistance, internal irreversibility, and heat leakage losses, the power output and thermal efficiency of the irreversible combined Carnot cycle were derived by utilizing the quantum gas state equation. The temperature effect of the working medium on power output and thermal efficiency is analyzed by numerical method, the optimal relationship between power output and thermal efficiency is solved by the Euler-Lagrange equation, and the effects of different working mediums on the optimal power and thermal efficiency performance are also focused. The results show that there is a set of working medium temperatures that makes the power output of the combined cycle be maximum. When there is no heat leakage loss in the combined cycle, all the characteristic curves of optimal power versus thermal efficiency are parabolic-like ones, and the internal irreversibility makes both power output and efficiency decrease. When there is heat leakage loss in the combined cycle, all the characteristic curves of optimal power versus thermal efficiency are loop-shaped ones, and the heat leakage loss only affects the thermal efficiency of the combined Carnot cycle. Comparing the power output of combined heat engines with four types of working mediums, the two-stage combined Carnot cycle using ideal Fermi-Bose gas as working medium obtains the highest power output.

Bound on Efficiency of Heat Engine from Uncertainty Relation Viewpoint

Quantum cycles in established heat engines can be modeled with various quantum systems as working substances. For example, a heat engine can be modeled with an infinite potential well as the working substance to determine the efficiency and work done. However, in this method, the relationship between the quantum observables and the physically measurable parameters-i.e., the efficiency and work done-is not well understood from the quantum mechanics approach. A detailed analysis is needed to link the thermodynamic variables (on which the efficiency and work done depends) with the uncertainty principle for better understanding. Here, we present the connection of the sum uncertainty relation of position and momentum operators with thermodynamic variables in the quantum heat engine model. We are able to determine the upper and lower bounds on the efficiency of the heat engine through the uncertainty relation.

Modeling and Performance Optimization of an Irreversible Two-Stage Combined Thermal Brownian Heat Engine

Based on finite time thermodynamics, an irreversible combined thermal Brownian heat engine model is established in this paper. The model consists of two thermal Brownian heat engines which are operating in tandem with thermal contact with three heat reservoirs. The rates of heat transfer are finite between the heat engine and the reservoir. Considering the heat leakage and the losses caused by kinetic energy change of particles, the formulas of steady current, power output and efficiency are derived. The power output and efficiency of combined heat engine are smaller than that of single heat engine operating between reservoirs with same temperatures. When the potential filed is free from external load, the effects of asymmetry of the potential, barrier height and heat leakage on the performance of the combined heat engine are analyzed. When the potential field is free from external load, the effects of basic design parameters on the performance of the combined heat engine are analyzed. The optimal power and efficiency are obtained by optimizing the barrier heights of two heat engines. The optimal working regions are obtained. There is optimal temperature ratio which maximize the overall power output or efficiency. When the potential filed is subjected to external load, effect of external load is analyzed. The steady current decreases versus external load; the power output and efficiency are monotonically increasing versus external load.

Re-Optimization of Expansion Work of a Heated Working Fluid with Generalized Radiative Heat Transfer Law

Based on the theoretical model of a heated ideal working fluid in the cylinder, the optimal motion path of the piston in this system, for the maximum work output, is re-studied by establishing the changed Lagrangian function and applying the elimination method when the initial internal energy, initial volume, finial volume and the process time are given and generalized radiative heat transfer law between the working fluid and heat bath is considered. The analytical solutions of the intermediate Euler-Lagrange arc with square, cubic and radiative heat transfer laws are taken as examples and obtained. The optimal motion path of the piston with cubic heat transfer law, which is obtained by applying the elimination method, is compared with that obtained by applying the Taylor formula expansion method through numerical example. The comparing result shows that the accuracy of the result which is obtained by applying the elimination method is not affected by the length of time of the expansion process of the working fluid, so this result is more universal.

Optimal Configuration of a Gas Expansion Process in a Piston-Type Cylinder with Generalized Convective Heat Transfer Law

Optimal configurations for the working fluid expansion process in a piston-type cylinder with maximum work production are studied by applying finite time thermodynamics. The problem is solved by utilizing the modified Lagrangian. The initial and final volumes, initial internal energy and total time are fixed, and the heat transfer between the working fluid and the external heat bath obeys the generalized convective heat transfer law, which can be transformed into Newton’s heat transfer law, the Dulong–Petit heat transfer law and the square convective heat transfer law. The optimal configurations of the expansion process under three different conditions of heat transfer law are provided and compared, respectively. The results show that the heat transfer law has both quantitative and qualitative influences on the optimal configurations of the expansion process.

Power and Efficiency Optimization for Open Combined Regenerative Brayton and Inverse Brayton Cycles with Regeneration before the Inverse Cycle

A theoretical model of an open combined cycle is researched in this paper. In this combined cycle, an inverse Brayton cycle is introduced into regenerative Brayton cycle by resorting to finite-time thermodynamics. The constraints of flow pressure drop and plant size are taken into account. Thirteen kinds of flow resistances in the cycle are calculated. On the one hand, four isentropic efficiencies are used to evaluate the friction losses in the blades and vanes. On the other hand, nine kinds of flow resistances are caused by the cross-section variances of flowing channels, which exist at the entrance of top cycle compressor (TCC), the entrance and exit of regenerator, the entrance and exit of combustion chamber, the exit of top cycle turbine, the exit of bottom cycle turbine, the entrance of heat exchanger, as well as the entrance of bottom cycle compressor (BCC). To analyze the thermodynamic indexes of power output, efficiency along with other coefficients, the analytical formulae of these indexes related to thirteen kinds of pressure drop losses are yielded. The thermodynamic performances are optimized by varying the cycle parameters. The numerical results reveal that the power output presents a maximal value when the air flow rate and entrance pressure of BCC change. In addition, the power output gets its double maximal value when the pressure ratio of TCC further changes. In the premise of constant flow rate of working fuel and invariant power plant size, the thermodynamic indexes can be optimized further when the flow areas of the components change. The effect of regenerator on thermal efficiency is further analyzed in detail. It is reported that better thermal efficiency can be procured by introducing the regenerator into the combined cycle in contrast with the counterpart without the regenerator as the cycle parameters change in the critical ranges.

Constructal Design of Elliptical Cylinders with Heat Generating for Entropy Generation Minimization

A heat dissipation model of discrete elliptical cylinders with heat generation on a thermal conduction pedestal cooled by forced convection is established. Constructal design is conducted numerically by taking the distributions of thermal conductivity and heat generating intensity as design variables, the dimensionless entropy generation rate (DEGR) as performance indicator. The optimal designs for discrete elliptical cylinders with heat generating are obtained respectively, i.e., there are optimal distributions of heat generating intensity with its fixed total amount of heat sources, and there are optimal distributions of thermal conductivity with its fixed total amount of heat sources. These optimums for minimum DEGRs are different at different Reynolds numbers of airflow. The heat generating intensity can be decreased one by one appropriately in the fluid flow direction to achieve the best effect. When the Reynolds number of airflow is smaller, the thermal conductivity of heat source can be increased one by one appropriately in the fluid flow direction to achieve the best effect; when the Reynolds number of airflow is larger, the thermal conductivity of each heat source should be equalized to achieve the best effect. The results can give thermal design guidelines for the practical heat generating devices with different materials and heat generating intensities.
