Multi-focused image fusion algorithm based on multi-scale hybrid attention residual network

In order to improve the detection performance of image fusion in focus areas and realize end-to-end decision diagram optimization, we design a multi-focus image fusion network based on deep learning. The network is trained using unsupervised learning and a multi-scale hybrid attention residual network model is introduced to enable solving for features at different levels of the image. In the training stage, multi-scale features are extracted from two source images with different focal points using hybrid multi-scale residual blocks (MSRB), and the up-down projection module (UDP) is introduced to obtain multi-scale edge information, then the extracted features are operated to obtain deeper image features. These blocks can effectively utilize multi-scale feature information without increasing the number of parameters. The deep features of the image are extracted in its test phase, input to the spatial frequency domain to calculate and measure the activity level and obtain the initial decision map, and use post-processing techniques to eliminate the edge errors. Finally, the decision map is generated and optimized, and the final fused image is obtained by combining the optimized decision map with the source image. The comparative experiments show that our proposed model achieves better fusion performance in subjective evaluation, and the quality of the obtained fused images is more robust with richer details. The objective evaluation metrics work better and the image fusion quality is higher.

Ref-MEF: Reference-Guided Flexible Gated Image Reconstruction Network for Multi-Exposure Image Fusion

Multi-exposure image fusion (MEF) is a computational approach that amalgamates multiple images, each captured at varying exposure levels, into a singular, high-quality image that faithfully encapsulates the visual information from all the contributing images. Deep learning-based MEF methodologies often confront obstacles due to the inherent inflexibilities of neural network structures, presenting difficulties in dynamically handling an unpredictable amount of exposure inputs. In response to this challenge, we introduce Ref-MEF, a method for color image multi-exposure fusion guided by a reference image designed to deal with an uncertain amount of inputs. We establish a reference-guided exposure correction (REC) module based on channel attention and spatial attention, which can correct input features and enhance pre-extraction features. The exposure-guided feature fusion (EGFF) module combines original image information and uses Gaussian filter weights for feature fusion while keeping the feature dimensions constant. The image reconstruction is completed through a gated context aggregation network (GCAN) and global residual learning GRL. Our refined loss function incorporates gradient fidelity, producing high dynamic range images that are rich in detail and demonstrate superior visual quality. In evaluation metrics focused on image features, our method exhibits significant superiority and leads in holistic assessments as well. It is worth emphasizing that as the number of input images increases, our algorithm exhibits notable computational efficiency.

BPDGAN: A GAN-Based Unsupervised Back Project Dense Network for Multi-Modal Medical Image Fusion

Single-modality medical images often cannot contain sufficient valid information to meet the information requirements of clinical diagnosis. The diagnostic efficiency is always limited by observing multiple images at the same time. Image fusion is a technique that combines functional modalities such as positron emission computed tomography (PET) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with anatomical modalities such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to supplement the complementary information. Meanwhile, fusing two anatomical images (like CT-MRI) is often required to replace single MRI, and the fused images can improve the efficiency and accuracy of clinical diagnosis. To this end, in order to achieve high-quality, high-resolution and rich-detail fusion without artificial prior, an unsupervised deep learning image fusion framework is proposed in this paper. It is named the back project dense generative adversarial network (BPDGAN) framework. In particular, we construct a novel network based on the back project dense block (BPDB) and convolutional block attention module (CBAM). The BPDB can effectively mitigate the impact of black backgrounds on image content. Conversely, the CBAM improves the performance of BPDGAN on the texture and edge information. To conclude, qualitative and quantitative experiments are tested to demonstrate the superiority of BPDGAN. In terms of quantitative metrics, BPDGAN outperforms the state-of-the-art comparisons by approximately 19.58%, 14.84%, 10.40% and 86.78% on AG, EI, Q_abf and Q_cv metrics, respectively.

Conditional Random Field-Guided Multi-Focus Image Fusion

Multi-Focus image fusion is of great importance in order to cope with the limited Depth-of-Field of optical lenses. Since input images contain noise, multi-focus image fusion methods that support denoising are important. Transform-domain methods have been applied to image fusion, however, they are likely to produce artifacts. In order to cope with these issues, we introduce the Conditional Random Field (CRF) CRF-Guided fusion method. A novel Edge Aware Centering method is proposed and employed to extract the low and high frequencies of the input images. The Independent Component Analysis—ICA transform is applied to high-frequency components and a Conditional Random Field (CRF) model is created from the low frequency and the transform coefficients. The CRF model is solved efficiently with the α-expansion method. The estimated labels are used to guide the fusion of the low-frequency components and the transform coefficients. Inverse ICA is then applied to the fused transform coefficients. Finally, the fused image is the addition of the fused low frequency and the fused high frequency. CRF-Guided fusion does not introduce artifacts during fusion and supports image denoising during fusion by applying transform domain coefficient shrinkage. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation demonstrate the superior performance of CRF-Guided fusion compared to state-of-the-art multi-focus image fusion methods.
