Evaluation of Linguistics Students' Learning Outcomes in Peer Teaching Courses: The Effect of Altruistic and Egoistic Behaviors

In the current study, we evaluated the students' foreign language lexical and grammatical skills in the course based on the peer teaching methodology and analyzed the effect of their altruistic and egoistic behaviors on learning results. This experiment was conducted in a groups of senior students majoring in linguistics. The total number of participants accounted for 197 students (101 students in reference groups and 96 in exposure groups); the difference between the reference and exposure groups was that the undergraduates in the latter were to prepare a fragment of a lesson, create exercises, and act in the capacity of a teacher during the course. To evaluate students' foreign language lexical and grammatical skills, the diagnostic test was conducted at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. Apart from comparing the diagnostic and final tests, we also circulated a questionnaire which checked the students' egoistic and altruistic tendencies. The data appeared to be quite noisy; therefore, we processed them with a tool which proves effective when it comes to solving such problems, i.e., neural networks. According to the results on learning outcomes, students improved their English proficiency in the exposure groups to a greater extent than in the reference groups. At the same time, the results of the psychological tests revealed that the higher the students' training level, the less altruistic they are. Also, it was detected that the more altruistic learners' progress in outcomes was higher than those of the more selfish students, regardless of the way in which the learning process was organized. Moreover, the statistical data proved the efficiency of the peer teaching methodology for students' majoring in linguistics, despite their psychological characteristics.

The Bridging Role of Goals between Affective Traits and Positive Creativity

Positive creativity training is crucial for 21st century learning, yet the influence of affective traits and goals with different intentions on positive creativity is unclear. We held a creativity training workshop for fifty-four undergraduates to determine its influence. We first assessed participants’ affective traits (risk-taking, curiosity, imagination, and complexity) using the Test of Divergent Feeling from the Creativity Assessment Packet. Then, we provided participants with twenty-seven products as inspiration sources for designing novel staplers. Each participant was asked to define a certain design goal, for which they chose one of the inspiration sources to generate ideas. We assessed the novelty of ideas and classified them according to the goals with different intentions. Results showed a bridging role of the goals between affective traits and creativity. This role was reflected in positive correlations between (1) curiosity and novelty with effort-saving goals; (2) complexity and novelty with orderliness goals. In addition, we found participants with high risk-taking tended to set versatility goals; the orderliness goal led to the highest novelty of ideas. Our findings suggested that teachers should pay attention to students’ affective traits and guide them to set goals in positive creativity education.

Cognitive Styles, Gender, and Student Academic Performance in Engineering Education

Cognitive styles affect the learning process positively if tasks are matched to the cognitive style of learners. This effect becomes more pronounced in complex education, such as in engineering. We attempted to critically assess the effect of cognitive styles and gender on students’ academic performance in eight engineering majors to understand whether a cognitive style preference is associated with certain majors. We used the Cognitive Style Indicator (CoSI) with a sample of n = 584 engineering students. Multiple standard statistical tests, regression tree analysis, and cluster analysis showed that none of the three cognitive styles was exclusively associated with better performance. However, students who had a stronger preference for a cognitive style were more likely to perform better. Gender, the major, and students’ clarity about their cognitive style were shown to be the best predictors of academic performance. Female students performed better and were clearer about their preferred cognitive style, whereas male students were more capable of adapting to different learning tasks. Furthermore, certain engineering majors were shown to be associated with certain cognitive styles. We concluded the study with theoretical and practical implications for engineering education and suggestions for further research.
