Rising gamification in health education: A bibliometric study

BACKGROUND

The rising gamification in educational contexts has been driven by its potential to increase student motivation, engagement, interest and learning outcomes. Thanks to these effects, gamification has gained popularity in health education. Due to the increase in studies on gamification in health education in recent years, this study has been carried out to present the studies in the relevant literature to researchers.

AIM

This study presents a quantitative mapping of gamification in health education through a bibliometric analysis of its publications.

METHODS

In this study, a total of 475 articles were analyzed by searching "health education*" and "gamif*" and similar terms from Web of Science and Scopus databases. R bibliometric package program was used for the analysis. 1971 authors contributed to the studies, which were spread between 2012 and 2024. The number of studies on gamification in the field of health education has grown in recent years. In particular, it was seen that 2018 can be seen as the breaking point and the highest number of publications was in 2023, with 101 publications.

RESULTS

The descriptive results showed that Zhang, X. was the most productive author, Nurse Education Today and BMC Medical Education were the most productive journals and the United States was the most productive country. It is concluded that terms such as gamification, medical education, game-based learning, education, serious games, simulation and e-learning are the most frequently used words in gamification studies in the field of health education. It has been observed that the concept of gamification is trending, especially in 2018-2023, with a frequency of 150 uses.

CONCLUSIONS

This study is expected to guide researchers in terms of key points for future research on gamification in health education contexts. It is expected that the knowledge provided by this study will enable researchers to be involved in this field and/or focus their research more effectively.

Systematic literature review of 10 years of cyclist safety research

Cyclist safety is a research field that is gaining increasing interest and attention, but still offers questions and challenges open to the scientific community. The aim of this study was to provide an exhaustive review of scientific publications in the cyclist safety field. For this purpose, Bibliometrix-R tool was used to analyse 1066 documents retrieved from Web of Science (WoS) between 2012 and 2021. The study examined published sources and productive scholars by exposing their most influential contributions, presented institutions and countries most contributing to cyclist safety and explored countries open towards international collaborations. A keywords analysis provided the most frequent author keywords in cyclist safety shown in a word cloud with E-bike, behaviour, and crash severity representing the primary keywords. Furthermore, a thematic map of cyclist safety field drafted from the author's keywords was identified. The strategic diagram is divided in four quadrants and, according to both density and centrality, the themes can be classified as follows: 1) motor themes, characterized by high value of both centrality and density; 2) niche themes, defined by high density and low centrality; 3) emerging or declining themes, featured by low value of both centrality and density; and 4) basic themes, distinguished by high centrality and low density. The motor themes (i.e., the main topics in cyclist safety field) crash severity and bike network were further explored. The research findings will be useful to develop strategies for making bike a safer and more confident form of transport as well as to guide researchers towards the future scientific knowledge.

Advancing Multidisciplinary STEM Education with Mathematics for Future-Ready Quantum Algorithmic Literacy

The perception that mathematics is difficult has always persisted. Nevertheless, mathematics is such an essential component of STEM education. Quantum technologies are already having enormous effects on our society, with advantages seen across a broad variety of industries, including finance, aerospace, and energy. These innovations promise to transform our lives. Managers in the business and public sectors will need to learn quantum computing. Quantum algorithmic literacy may help increase mathematical understanding and enthusiasm. The current paper proposes that one possible approach is to present the information in a reasonably gentle but intelligible way, in order to excite individuals with the mathematics that they already know by extending them to acquiring quantum algorithmic literacy. A gentle introduction to the mathematics required to model quantum computing ideas, including linear transformations and matrix algebra, will be given. Quantum entanglement, linear transformations, quantum cryptography, and quantum teleportation will be used as examples to illustrate the usefulness of basic mathematical concepts in formulating quantum algorithms. These exemplars in quantum algorithmic literacy can help to invigorate people’s interest in mathematics. Additionally, a qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) framework is provided that teachers can utilize to determine which students to approach for remediation. This assists the teachers in dispelling any pupils’ uncertainty about mathematical concepts.
