Machine Learning Application in Horticulture and Prospects for Predicting Fresh Produce Losses and Waste: A Review

The current review examines the state of knowledge and research on machine learning (ML) applications in horticultural production and the potential for predicting fresh produce losses and waste. Recently, ML has been increasingly applied in horticulture for efficient and accurate operations. Given the health benefits of fresh produce and the need for food and nutrition security, efficient horticultural production and postharvest management are important. This review aims to assess the application of ML in preharvest and postharvest horticulture and the potential of ML in reducing postharvest losses and waste by predicting their magnitude, which is crucial for management practices and policymaking in loss and waste reduction. The review starts by assessing the application of ML in preharvest horticulture. It then presents the application of ML in postharvest handling and processing, and lastly, the prospects for its application in postharvest loss and waste quantification. The findings revealed that several ML algorithms perform satisfactorily in classification and prediction tasks. Based on that, there is a need to further investigate the suitability of more models or a combination of models with a higher potential for classification and prediction. Overall, the review suggested possible future directions for research related to the application of ML in postharvest losses and waste quantification.

Machine Learning and Deep Learning in Synthetic Biology: Key Architectures, Applications, and Challenges

Machine learning (ML), particularly deep learning (DL), has made rapid and substantial progress in synthetic biology in recent years. Biotechnological applications of biosystems, including pathways, enzymes, and whole cells, are being probed frequently with time. The intricacy and interconnectedness of biosystems make it challenging to design them with the desired properties. ML and DL have a synergy with synthetic biology. Synthetic biology can be employed to produce large data sets for training models (for instance, by utilizing DNA synthesis), and ML/DL models can be employed to inform design (for example, by generating new parts or advising unrivaled experiments to perform). This potential has recently been brought to light by research at the intersection of engineering biology and ML/DL through achievements like the design of novel biological components, best experimental design, automated analysis of microscopy data, protein structure prediction, and biomolecular implementations of ANNs (Artificial Neural Networks). I have divided this review into three sections. In the first section, I describe predictive potential and basics of ML along with myriad applications in synthetic biology, especially in engineering cells, activity of proteins, and metabolic pathways. In the second section, I describe fundamental DL architectures and their applications in synthetic biology. Finally, I describe different challenges causing hurdles in the progress of ML/DL and synthetic biology along with their solutions.

A transformer-based deep learning framework to predict employee attrition

In all areas of business, employee attrition has a detrimental impact on the accuracy of profit management. With modern advanced computing technology, it is possible to construct a model for predicting employee attrition to minimize business owners' costs. Despite the reality that these types of models have never been evaluated under real-world conditions, several implementations were developed and applied to the IBM HR Employee Attrition dataset to evaluate how these models may be incorporated into a decision support system and their effect on strategic decisions. In this study, a Transformer-based neural network was implemented and was characterized by contextual embeddings adapting to tubular data as a computational technique for determining employee turnover. Experimental outcomes showed that this model had significantly improved prediction efficiency compared to other state-of-the-art models. In addition, this study pointed out that deep learning, in general, and Transformer-based networks, in particular, are promising for dealing with tabular and unbalanced data.

Machine Learning for Bankruptcy Prediction in the American Stock Market: Dataset and Benchmarks

Predicting corporate bankruptcy is one of the fundamental tasks in credit risk assessment. In particular, since the 2007/2008 financial crisis, it has become a priority for most financial institutions, practitioners, and academics. The recent advancements in machine learning (ML) enabled the development of several models for bankruptcy prediction. The most challenging aspect of this task is dealing with the class imbalance due to the rarity of bankruptcy events in the real economy. Furthermore, a fair comparison in the literature is difficult to make because bankruptcy datasets are not publicly available and because studies often restrict their datasets to specific economic sectors and markets and/or time periods. In this work, we investigated the design and the application of different ML models to two different tasks related to default events: (a) estimating survival probabilities over time; (b) default prediction using time-series accounting data with different lengths. The entire dataset used for the experiments has been made available to the scientific community for further research and benchmarking purposes. The dataset pertains to 8262 different public companies listed on the American stock market between 1999 and 2018. Finally, in light of the results obtained, we critically discuss the most interesting metrics as proposed benchmarks for future studies.

Predicting Employee Attrition Using Machine Learning Approaches

Employee attrition refers to the natural reduction in the employees in an organization due to many unavoidable factors. Employee attrition results in a massive loss for an organization. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) determines that USD 4129 is the average cost-per-hire for a new employee. According to recent stats, 57.3% is the attrition rate in the year 2021. A research study needs to be implemented to find the causes of employee attrition and a learning framework to predict employee attrition. This research study aimed to analyze the organizational factors that caused employee attrition and the prediction of employee attrition using machine learning techniques. The four machine learning techniques were applied in comparison. The proposed optimized Extra Trees Classifier (ETC) approach achieved an accuracy score of 93% for employee attrition prediction. The proposed approach outperformed recent state-of-the-art studies. The Employee Exploratory Data Analysis (EEDA) was applied to determine the factors that caused employee attrition. Our study revealed that the monthly income, hourly rate, job level, and age are the key factors that cause employee attrition. Our proposed approach and research findings help organizations overcome employee attrition by improving the factors that cause attrition.

Classification of Glaucoma Based on Elephant-Herding Optimization Algorithm and Deep Belief Network

This study proposes a novel glaucoma identification system from fundus images through the deep belief network (DBN) optimized by the elephant-herding optimization (EHO) algorithm. Initially, the input image undergoes the preprocessing steps of noise removal and enhancement processes, followed by optical disc (OD) and optical cup (OC) segmentation and extraction of structural, intensity, and textural features. Most discriminative features are then selected using the ReliefF algorithm and passed to the DBN for classification into glaucomatous or normal. To enhance the classification rate of the DBN, the DBN parameters are fine-tuned by the EHO algorithm. The model has experimented on public and private datasets with 7280 images, which attained a maximum classification rate of 99.4%, 100% specificity, and 99.89% sensitivity. The 10-fold cross validation reduced the misclassification and attained 98.5% accuracy. Investigations proved the efficacy of the proposed method in avoiding bias, dataset variability, and reducing false positives compared to similar works of glaucoma classification. The proposed system can be tested on diverse datasets, aiding in the improved glaucoma diagnosis.

An intelligent cybersecurity system for detecting fake news in social media websites

People worldwide suffer from fake news in many life aspects, healthcare, transportation, education, economics, and many others. Therefore, many researchers have considered seeking techniques for automatically detecting fake news in the last decade. The most popular news agencies use e-publishing on their websites; even websites can publish any news they want. However, thus before quotation any news from a website, there should be a close look at news resource ranking by using a trusted websites classifier, such as the website world rank, which reflects the repute of these websites. This paper uses the world rank of news websites as the main factor of news accuracy by using two widespread and trusted websites ranking. Moreover, a secondary factor is proposed to compute the news accuracy similarity by comparing the current news with fakes news and getting the possible news accuracy. Experiments results are conducted on several benchmark datasets. The results showed that the proposed method got promising results compared to other comparative methods in defining the news accuracy.

Service Oriented R-ANN Knowledge Model for Social Internet of Things

Increase in technologies around the world requires adding intelligence to the objects, and making it a smart object in an environment leads to the Social Internet of Things (SIoT). These social objects are uniquely identifiable, transferable and share information from user-to-objects and objects-to objects through interactions in a smart environment such as smart homes, smart cities and many more applications. SIoT faces certain challenges such as handling of heterogeneous objects, selection of generated data in objects, missing values in data. Therefore, the discovery and communication of meaningful patterns in data are more important for every application. Thus, the analysis of data is essential in smarter decisions and qualifies performance of data for various applications. In a smart environment, social networks of intelligent objects are increasing services and decreasing the relationship in a reliable and efficient way of sharing resources and services. Hence, this work proposed the feature selection method based on proposed semantic rules and established the relationships to classify the services using relationship artificial neural networks (R-ANN). R-ANN is an inversely proportional relationship to the objects based on certain rules and conditions between the objects to objects and users to objects. It provides the service oriented knowledge model to make decisions in the proposed R-ANN model that produces service to the users. The proposed R-ANN provides an accuracy of 89.62% for various services namely weather, air quality, parking, light status, and people presence respectively in the SIoT environment compared to the existing model.
