Enhancing Insulating Performances of Presspaper by Introduction of Nanofibrillated Cellulose

Effect of Impregnated Phenolic Resins on the Cellulose Membrane for Polymeric Insulator

In this study, a cellulose membrane (CM) was chemically treated with phenolic (PF) resin to improve its performance as a polymeric insulator. The CM was prepared from kenaf pulp, and the PF was synthesized from oil palm empty fruit (EFB) fibre. Four different concentrations of synthesized PF resin (5, 10, 15, and 20 wt.%) were impregnated under wet or dry conditions. Thermal analysis of the phenolic cellulose membrane (PCM) showed that the samples had good chemical interaction and compatibility. The PF uptake in the wet phenolic cellulose membrane (PCMW) was higher than in the dry phenolic cellulose membrane (PCMD). During the PF uptake, the CM underwent solvent exchange and absorption in wet and dry membranes, respectively. This difference also affected the crosslinking of PCM samples via the formation of methylene bridges. Due to the PF treatment, the PCM showed lower water absorption than CM. The PF concentrations also affect the surface roughness and electrical properties of PCM samples. These findings prove that PCM can be used as a renewable and green polymer electrical insulator.

Substantial Improvement of the Dielectric Strength of Cellulose-Liquid Composites: Effects of Traps at the Nanoscale Interface

The dielectric strength of cellulose-liquid composites is always about several times higher than that of the cellulose paper and insulating liquids. However, this experimental phenomenon has not yet been demonstrated theoretically. Herein, the spectra characterization, molecular simulation, and wave function analysis method provide a new insight that the role of nanoscale interfacial adsorption of cellulose-liquid is exclusive for composites affecting the charge separation and producing the deep-level traps to seriously hinder electromigration under an electric field, which is responsible for the difference in dielectric strength. Meanwhile, the π conjugation and σ-π hyperconjugation effects enhance the electrical stability of aromatic hydrocarbon insulating liquids. In conclusion, interfacial trap theory can be used to explain the correlation of dielectric strength between cellulose-liquid composites and cellulose paper or dielectric liquids. It can be expected that materials with high dielectric strength can be manufactured according to the fundamental study of interfacial trap theory.

Multilayer bacterial cellulose/resole nanocomposites: Relationship between structural and electro-thermo-mechanical properties

The aim of this research was to fabricate multilayer insulator nanocomposites using phenolic resin impregnated bacterial cellulose (BC) handsheets and investigate the relationships between their structural and electro-thermo-mechanical properties. G. xylinus was incubated in a static Hestrin-Schramm culture at 28 °C for 14 days. Then, BC aqueous suspension was added to kraft pulp aqueous suspension. The content of BC that was added to the pulp suspension was as follows: 5, 10 and 15%. The disintegrated BC was turned into handsheets by a vacuum method. Dried handsheets were immersed in phenolic resin. To obtain composites, 5 immersed handsheets from each treatment were laid-up and hot pressed at 150 °C under 100 MPa pressure for 10 min. The specimens were characterized by means of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), thermal mechanical analysis (TMA), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) techniques and insulating tests as dielectric loss factor and breakdown voltage. The results of thermal analysis showed an improvement in the thermal stability and an increase in the evaporation enthalpy of prepared samples with higher BC content. The mechanical examinations indicated that by increasing BC content in nanocomposites, the loss modulus and tan delta increased and the storage modulus of specimens decreased. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of samples diminished with increase of BC content. FE-SEM characterization showed different qualities of resin impregnation of the papers. The results of insulating tests confirmed that dielectric loss tangent and dielectric breakdown voltage increased in the specimens with higher BC content.

Predicting the Dielectric Properties of Nanocellulose-Modified Presspaper Based on the Multivariate Analysis Method

Nanocellulose-modified presspaper is a promising solution to achieve cellulose insulation with better performance, reducing the risk of electrical insulation failures of a converter transformer. Predicting the dielectric properties will help to further design and improvement of presspaper. In this paper, a multivariable method was adopted to determine the effect of softwood fiber on the macroscopic performance of presspaper. Based on the parameters selected using the optimum subset method, a multiple linear regression was built to model the relationship between the fiber properties and insulating performance of presspaper. The results show that the fiber width and crystallinity had an obvious influence on the mechanical properties of presspaper, and fiber length, fines, lignin, and nanocellulose had a significant impact on the breakdown properties. The proposed models exhibit a prediction accuracy of higher than 90% when verified with the experimental results. Finally, the effect of nanocellulose on the breakdown strength of presspaper was taken into account and new models were derived.
