A Critical Review of Spinel Structured Iron Cobalt Oxides Based Materials for Electrochemical Energy Storage and Conversion

Amorphous Oxysulfide Reconstructed from Spinel NiCo2 S4 for Efficient Water Oxidation

The progress of effective and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is urgent, which is essential to promote the overall efficiency of green hydrogen production. To improve the performance of spinel cobalt-based oxides, which serve as promising water oxidation electrocatalysts in alkaline electrolytes, most researches have been concentrated on cations modification. Here, an anionic regulation mechanism is employed to adopt sulfur(S) anion substitution to supplant NiCo₂ O₄ by NiCo₂ S₄ , which contributed to an impressive OER performance in alkali. It is revealed that the substitution of S constructs a sub-stable spinel structure that facilitates its reconstruction into active amorphous oxysulfide under OER conditions. More importantly, as the active phase in the actual reaction process, the hetero-anionic amorphous oxysulfide has an appropriately tuned electronic structure and efficient OER electrocatalytic activity. This work demonstrates a promising approach for achieving anion conditioning-based tunable structure reconstruction for robust and easy preparation spinel oxide OER electrocatalysts.

The Renewed Interest on Brunogeierite, GeFe2O4, a Rare Mineral of Germanium: A Review

GeFe₂O₄, also known as brunogeierite, is a rare mineral of germanium. It has a normal spinel structure and, as with many other spinels, amazing functional properties thanks to its peculiar structural features. In the past, its spectroscopic, optical, magnetic and electronic properties were determined; then, for many years, this compound was left behind. Only recently, a renewed interest in this oxide has arisen, particularly for its application in the electrochemical field. In this review paper, the crystal structure of GeFe₂O₄ will be described, as well as the synthesis methods required to obtain single crystals or polycrystalline powders. Its spectroscopic, magnetic, optical and electrical properties will be reported in detail. Then, successful applications known so far will be described: its use as anode in Lithium Ion and Sodium Ion Batteries and as electrocatalyst for urea oxidation reaction.

Decoration of green synthesized S, N-GQDs and CoFe2O4 on halloysite nanoclay as natural substrate for electrochemical hydrogen storage application

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) with high active sites are used as natural layered mineral supports. Sulfur- and nitrogen-co doped graphene quantum dots (S, N-GQDs) as conductive additive and CoFe₂O₄ as the electrocatalyst was decorated on a HNT support to design an effective and environmentally friendly active material. Herein, an eco-friendly CoFe₂O₄/S, N-GQDs/HNTs nanocomposite is fabricated via a green hydrothermal method to equip developed hydrogen storage sites and to allow for quick charge transportation for hydrogen storage utilization. The hydrogen storage capacity of pure HNTs was 300 mAhg⁻¹ at a current density of 1 mA after 20 cycles, while that of S, N-GQD-coated HNTs (S, N-GQDs/HNTs) was 466 mAhg⁻¹ under identical conditions. It was also conceivable to increase the hydrogen sorption ability through the spillover procedure by interlinking CoFe₂O₄ in the halloysite nanoclay. The hydrogen storage capacity of the CoFe₂O₄/HNTs was 450 mAhg⁻¹, while that of the representative designed nanocomposites of CoFe₂O₄/S, N-GQDs/HNTs was 600 mAhg⁻¹. The halloysite nano clay and treated halloysite show potential as electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage in alkaline media; in particular, ternary CoFe₂O₄/S, N-GQD/HNT nanocomposites prove developed hydrogen sorption performance in terms of presence of conductive additive, physisorption, and spillover mechanisms.

Synthesis of Iron Gallate (FeGa2O4) Nanoparticles by Mechanochemical Method

The study was focused on optimizing the procedure of synthesizing iron gallate (FeGa2O4) nanoparticles by mechanochemical techniques. Due to a lack of information in the literature about the sequence of synthesis procedures of FeGa2O4 structures, the study is based on the establishment of a recipe for FeGa2O4 synthesis using mechanochemical techniques. Rotation speed, grinding media, and milling durations were the optimized parameters. At the end of each step, the structure of the resulting samples was investigated using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of samples. At the end of the processes, the XRD patterns of the samples milled under an air atmosphere were coherent with the XRD pattern of the FeGa2O4 structure. XRD patterns were analyzed employing Rietveld refinements to determine lattice parameters under the assumption of an inverse spinel crystal formation. Furthermore, a fluctuation at band gap values in the range of 2.39 to 2.55 eV was realized and associated with the excess Fe atoms in the lattice, which settled as defects in the crystal structures.

Electrochemical performance of transition metal based CoB2O4 (B = Co and Fe) oxides as an electrode material for energy storage devices

A high capacitance of 1039 F g−1 for Co3O4 as compared to 527 F g−1 for CoFe2O4 along with a capacity retention of 86% for up to GCD 5000 cycles, confirm it's potential to be used as an electrode for practical energy storage devices.

A porous MOF-derived NiMn2O4 material and its superior energy storage performance for high-performance supercapacitors

A binder-free C@NiMn2O4 electroactive material was prepared through the calcination of a pristine Ni,Mn-MOF at 600 °C for 4 h. The fabricated C@NiMn2O4/NF electrode exhibits an area specific capacitance of 5.39 F cm−2 at 2 mA cm−2.

Advances in Electrochemical and Catalytic Performance of Nanostructured FeCo2 O4 and Its Composites

It is well established that the excessive and uncontrolled use of fossil fuels and organic chemicals have put a risk to the earth's environment and the life that sustains within it. Carbon-free, sustainable, alternative energy technologies have therefore become the prime focus of current research. Smart inorganic materials have emerged as the potential solution to suffice energy needs and remediate the organic pollutants discharged to the environment. One such promising, versatile material is FeCo₂ O₄ which has gained immense research interest in the present decade due to its high efficiency and performance in energy and environmental applications. Innovative material design strategies involving the interplay of nanostructured morphology, chemical composition, redox surface states, and defect engineering have significantly enhanced both electrochemical and catalytic properties of FeCo₂ O₄ . Therefore, this review article aims to provide the first-ever comprehensive account of the latest research and developments in design-synthesis strategies, characterization techniques, and applications of nanostructured FeCo₂ O₄ and its composites in various electrochemical as well as catalytic applications. A detailed account of the nanostructured FeCo₂ O₄ and its composites in various energy storage and conversion devices such as supercapacitors (SCs), batteries, and fuel cells has been presented. Furthermore, a special section has been devoted to highlight the role of FeCo₂ O₄ in enhancing the sluggish reaction kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water splitting application. This review also highlights the role of nanostructured FeCo₂ O₄ in photocatalytic waste water treatment, gas sensing, and dual-phase membrane technologies wherein FeCo₂ O₄ has demonstrated promising performance.

Crystalline Multi-Metallic Compounds as Host Materials in Cathode for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is one of the most promising next-generation rechargeable batteries. Lots of fundamental research has been done for the problems during cycling like capacity fading and columbic efficiency reducing owing to severe diffusion and migration of polysulfide intermediates. In the early stage, a wide variety of carbon materials are used as host materials for sulfur to enhance electrical conductivity and adsorb soluble polysulfides. Beyond carbon materials, metal based polar compounds are introduced as host materials for sulfur because of their strong catalytic activity and adsorption ability to suppress the shuttle effect. In addition, relatively high density of metal compounds is helpful for increasing volumetric energy density of Li-S batteries. This review focuses on crystalline multi-metal compounds as host materials in sulfur cathodes. The multi-metal compounds involve not only transition metal composite oxides with specific crystalline structures, binary metal chalcogenides, double or complex salts, but also the metal compounds doped or partially substituted by other metal ions. Generally, for the multi-metal compounds, microstructure and morphologies in micro-nano scale are very significant for mass transfer in electrodes; moreover, adsorption and catalytic ability for polysulfides make fast kinetics in the electrode processes.

Selectivity of Mixed Iron-Cobalt Spinels Deposited on a N,S-Doped Mesoporous Carbon Support in the Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Alkaline Media

One of the practical efforts in the development of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts applicable to fuel cells and metal-air batteries is focused on reducing the cost of the catalysts production. Herein, we have examined the ORR performance of cheap, non-noble metal based catalysts comprised of nanosized mixed Fe-Co spinels deposited on N,S-doped mesoporous carbon support (N,S-MPC). The effect of the chemical and phase composition of the active phase on the selectivity of catalysts in the ORR process in alkaline media was elucidated by changing the iron content. The synthesized materials were thoroughly characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy (RS). Detailed S/TEM/EDX and Raman analysis of the phase composition of the synthesized ORR catalysts revealed that the dominant mixed iron-cobalt spinel is accompanied by minor fractions of bare cobalt and highly dispersed spurious iron oxides (Fe2O3 and Fe3O4). The contribution of individual phases and their degree of agglomeration on the carbon support directly influence the selectivity of the obtained catalysts. It was found that the mixed iron-cobalt spinel single phase gives rise to significant improvement of the catalyst selectivity towards the desired 4e- reaction pathway, in comparison to the reference bare cobalt spinel, whereas spurious iron oxides play a negative role for the catalyst selectivity.

Three-Dimensional-Order Macroporous AB2O4 Spinels (A, B =Co and Mn) as Electrodes in Zn-Air Batteries

In this work, atomically substituted three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) spinels based on Co and Mn (MnCo₂O₄ and CoMn₂O₄) were synthetized and used as cathodic electrocatalysts in a primary Zn-air battery. Scanning/transmission electron microscopy images show a 3DOM structure for both materials. Skeleton sizes of 114.4 and 140.8 nm and surface areas of 65.3 and 74.6 m² g^-1 were found for MnCo₂O₄ and CoMn₂O₄, respectively. The increase in surface area and higher presence of Mn³⁺ and Mn⁴⁺ species in the CoMn₂O₄ 3DOM material improved battery performance with a maximum power density of 101.6 mW cm^-2 and a specific capacity of 1440 mA h g^-1, which shows the highest battery performance reported to date using similar spinel materials. The stability performance of the electrocatalyst was evaluated in half-cell and battery cell systems, showing the higher durability of CoMn₂O₄, which was related to its better capability to perform the electrocatalytic process as adsorption, electron transfer, and desorption. It was found through density functional theory calculations that the CoMn₂O₄ spinel has a higher density of states in the Fermi level vicinity and better conductivity. Finally, the unique shape of 3DOM spinels promoted a high interaction between electroactive species and catalytic sites, making them suitable for oxygen reduction reaction applications.

Mesoporous Cobalt Ferrite Nanosystems Obtained by Surfactant-Assisted Hydrothermal Method: Tuning Morpho-structural and Magnetic Properties via pH-Variation

A facile and cheap surfactant-assisted hydrothermal method was used to prepare mesoporous cobalt ferrite nanosystems with BET surface area up to 151 m²/g. These mesostructures with high BET surface areas and pore sizes are made from assemblies of nanoparticles (NPs) with average sizes between 7.8 and 9.6 nm depending on the initial pH conditions. The pH proved to be the key factor for controlling not only NP size, but also the phase purity and the porosity properties of the mesostructures. At pH values lower than 7, a parasite hematite phase begins to form. The sample obtained at pH = 7.3 has magnetization at saturation M_s = 38 emu/g at 300 K (54.3 emu/g at 10 K) and BET surface area S_BET = 151 m²/g, whereas the one obtained at pH = 8.3 has M_s = 68 emu/g at 300 K (83.6 emu/g at 10 K) and S_BET = 101 m²/g. The magnetic coercive field values at 10 K are high at up to 12,780 Oe, with a maximum coercive field reached for the sample obtained at pH = 8.3. Decreased magnetic performances are obtained at pH values higher than 9. The iron occupancies of the tetrahedral and octahedral sites belonging to the cobalt ferrite spinel structure were extracted through decomposition of the Mössbauer patterns in spectral components. The magnetic anisotropy constants of the investigated NPs were estimated from the temperature dependence of the hyperfine magnetic field. Taking into consideration the high values of BET surface area and the magnetic anisotropy constants as well as the significant magnetizations for saturation at ambient temperature, and the fact that all parameters can be adjusted through the initial pH conditions, these materials are very promising as recyclable anti-polluting agents, magnetically separable catalysts, and targeted drug delivery vehicles.

Spinel ferrite (AFe2O4)-based heterostructured designs for lithium-ion battery, environmental monitoring, and biomedical applications

The development of spinel ferrite nanomaterial (SFN)-based hybrid architectures has become more popular owing to the fascinating physicochemical properties of SFNs, such as their good electro-optical and catalytic properties, high chemothermal stability, ease of functionalization, and superparamagnetic behaviour. Furthermore, achieving the perfect combination of SFNs and different nanomaterials has promised to open up many unique synergistic effects and advantages. Inspired by the above-mentioned noteworthy properties, numerous and varied applications have been recently developed, such as energy storage in lithium-ion batteries, environmental pollutant monitoring, and, especially, biomedical applications. In this review, recent development efforts relating to SFN-based hybrid designs are described in detail and logically, classified according to 4 major hybrid structures: SFNs/carbonaceous nanomaterials; SFNs/metal–metal oxides; SFNs/MS₂; and SFNs/other materials. The underlying advantages of the additional interactions and combinations of effects, compared to the standalone components, and the potential uses have been analyzed and assessed for each hybrid structure in relation to lithium-ion battery, environmental, and biomedical applications.

We have summarized recent developments in SFN-based hybrid designs. The additional interactions, combination effects, and important changes have been analyzed and assessed for LIB, environmental monitoring, and biomedical applications.

Zirconium-Regulation-Induced Bifunctionality in 3D Cobalt-Iron Oxide Nanosheets for Overall Water Splitting

The design of high-efficiency non-noble bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is paramount for water splitting technologies and associated renewable energy systems. Spinel-structured oxides with rich redox properties can serve as alternative low-cost OER electrocatalysts but with poor HER performance. Here, zirconium regulation in 3D CoFe₂ O₄ (CoFeZr oxides) nanosheets on nickel foam, as a novel strategy inducing bifunctionality toward OER and HER for overall water splitting, is reported. It is found that the incorporation of Zr into CoFe₂ O₄ can tune the nanosheet morphology and electronic structure around the Co and Fe sites for optimizing adsorption energies, thus effectively enhancing the intrinsic activity of active sites. The as-synthesized 3D CoFeZr oxide nanosheet exhibits high OER activity with small overpotential, low Tafel slope, and good stability. Moreover, it shows unprecedented HER activity with a small overpotential of 104 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 in alkaline media, which is better than ever reported counterparts. When employing the CoFeZr oxides nanosheets as both anode and cathode catalysts for overall water splitting, a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 is achieved at the cell voltage of 1.63 V in 1.0 m KOH.
