Experimental Investigation on Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics of a Needle-Cylinder Type Ionic Wind Generator for LED Cooling

Study on the Influence of Central Hole Diameter in a Wire Mesh Electrode on Ionic Wind Characteristics

Ionic wind, which is generated by a corona discharge, is a promising field that offers significant advantages by directly converting electrical energy into kinetic energy. Because of the electrical characteristics of ionic wind, most studies aiming to improve the performance of ionic wind generators have focused on modifying the geometry of electrode configurations. A mesh-type electrode is one of the electrodes used as a collecting electrode in an ionic wind generator. Using a mesh electrode results in decreased momentum of the ionic wind and increased pressure drop due to frictional loss of the flow. In this study, to minimize the reduction in momentum, a mesh electrode with a central hole was proposed and investigated. Experiments were conducted with the configuration of a needle and mesh with the central hole. These experiments analyzed the effect of the central hole diameter and the distance between the needle and the mesh electrodes on the electrical and physical characteristics of the ionic wind. The addition of the central hole led to a higher average velocity and lower current, thus resulting in increased energy conversion efficiency. The presented configuration offers a simple geometry without electrical and physical interference from complex configurations, and it is considered to have the potential to improve energy conversion efficiency and optimize ionic wind flow.

Research on Wire-to-Two Fin Configuration for Positive Atmospheric Plasma by Electrokinetic Blower

Interest in the development of electro-fluid-dynamic devices (EFDs) based on corona discharge is growing due to their advantages and applicability across different industrial sectors. On the one hand, their performance as forced convection motors, in terms of weight, volume, and absence of noise and moving parts, make them competitive against traditional systems such as fans. On the other hand, the actions of the corona discharge, in terms of elimination of viruses and bacteria, are already known. This paper studies the characteristics of corona discharge in terms of air flow for a new proposed configuration and geometry of electrodes. A systematic study is performed through a parametric study of the distances, power consumption, and size of the corona electrode. The characteristic voltage–current (CVCCs) and flow–pressure curves obtained provide design rules to use the generated corona discharge and the device itself, as a silent air propeller, which may also sterilize the surrounding environment and surfaces.

Enhanced Cooling of LED Filament Bulbs Using an Embedded Tri-Needle/Ring Ionic Wind Device

Improving the heat dissipation ability for light-emitting diode (LED) filament bulb is very difficult. A tri-needle/ring ionic wind generator was developed to improve the heat dissipation condition of bulbs. The operation characteristics of the ionic wind generator, such as the electrode gap, inception voltage, and discharge current with regard to the operation voltage, were studied by experiments. The ionic wind velocity within the bulb was investigated under different electrode gaps and applied voltages. The temperature drop achieved by the ionic was were tested with the consideration of many operation parameters for analysis. The experiments showed that ionic wind can provide efficient and stable cooling effect for LED filament bulbs. The temperature drop of LED junction can reach 30 °C at best. Good stability and adjustability of the ionic wind generator were demonstrated by tracing the temperature history of LED filaments in long-term tests. Finally, the light efficiency of LED filament bulbs with ionic wind cooling was studied. The experimental results showed that light efficiency was improved by 7.3% under the best cooling case. The experimental results indicate that the embedded ionic wind generator can provide an effective solution for cooling LED filament bulbs.
