Comparative Study of the Mechanical and Fracturing Behaviors of Shale from Different Gas Blocks in the Longmaxi Formation

With the development of shale gas exploration and exploitation, the mechanical and failure characteristics of shale have become one of the focuses. However, few studies have considered the differences in the mechanical properties of shales in different shale gas blocks. In this study, the effects of bedding orientation on the stress-strain curves, elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, and fracture morphology of shale samples from the Zhaotong block are analyzed by laboratory experiments, first. Then, a standard deviation method is used to characterize the anisotropy degree of the mechanical and fracturing characteristics of shale. The anisotropy ratio of shale samples between the Zhaotong and Chongqing areas has been comparatively studied. Comparison results show that the shale anisotropy induced by the bedding orientations demonstrates apparent regional characteristics. There are significant differences in the mechanical properties of shale obtained from different shale gas blocks. It indicates that the optimization of engineering practices such as the design of hydraulic fracturing should consider the influences of the bedding orientations and shale gas blocks on the shale anisotropy.

Effect of Clay Minerals on Tensile Failure Characteristics of Shale

The effects of mass fraction, elastic modulus, and the spatial distribution of clay minerals on the failure behaviors of shale under the Brazilian disc split are investigated in this study based on a developed PFC^2D model. The feasibility of this established numerical model is validated by the load-displacement curves and fracture morphology of shale in the laboratory test. The influences of the mass fraction, elastic modulus, and spatial distribution of clay minerals on the tensile strength and failure behaviors of shale are comprehensively analyzed using the developed numerical model. The results show that the clay content has the strongest influence on the tensile strength of shale. The number of matrix cracks is sensitive to the clay distribution, and the complexity of the matrix fracture network in shale shows a positive correlation with the clay content. In addition, the variation of the clay modulus has a linear correlation with the macro elastic modulus of shale.

Modified Synthesis and Physicochemical Characterization of a Bioglass-Based Composite for Guided Bone Regeneration

Objectives

Bioglass composites and polymers are materials of great interest for the medical and dental areas due to their properties, combining the bioactivity of ceramic materials and the mechanical properties of polymers. The purpose of the present study was to develop and to characterize the physicochemical and morphological properties an experimental bioglass-based ternary composite composed associated with sodium carboxymethylcellulose (Na-CMC) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The compatibility of functional groups with bioglass was previously evaluated. The composite was then synthesized and evaluated in terms of morphology, elemental composition, compressive strength, porosity, and bioactivity.

Materials and Methods

The bioglass was previously synthesized using a sol-gel route and characterized using FTIR analysis to identify the functional groups. The bone graft composite was then synthesized associating the bioglass with PVA, surfactant Triton X, and Na-CMC. The composite was then morphologically characterized using SEM/EDS. The porosity of the composite was analyzed using µCT, which also provided the composite compression strength. The composite was then evaluated in terms of its bioactivity using SEM/EDS analyses after immersion in SBF for 12, 24, 48, and 72 h.

Results

FTIR analysis confirmed, among other components, the presence of Si–O–Ca and Si–O–Si bonds, compatible with bioglass. SEM analysis exhibited a composite with a porous structure without spikes. The elemental mapping confirmed the presence of Si, Ca, and P in the composite. µCT analysis demonstrated a porous structure with 42.67% of open pores and an average compression strength of 124.7 MPa. It has also demonstrated ionic changes in the composite surface after immersion in SBF, with increasing detection of Ca and P as a function of time, highlighting its chemical bioactivity.

Conclusions

It can be concluded that the proposed bioglass-based composite presents a three-dimensional, well-structured, chemically bioactive porous structure, mechanically resistant for being reinforced with polymeric phases, with promising results as a synthetic bone graft, which makes it suitable for guided bone regeneration.

Computed Tomography as a Characterization Tool for Engineered Scaffolds with Biomedical Applications

The ever-growing field of materials with applications in the biomedical field holds great promise regarding the design and fabrication of devices with specific characteristics, especially scaffolds with personalized geometry and architecture. The continuous technological development pushes the limits of innovation in obtaining adequate scaffolds and establishing their characteristics and performance. To this end, computed tomography (CT) proved to be a reliable, nondestructive, high-performance machine, enabling visualization and structure analysis at submicronic resolutions. CT allows both qualitative and quantitative data of the 3D model, offering an overall image of its specific architectural features and reliable numerical data for rigorous analyses. The precise engineering of scaffolds consists in the fabrication of objects with well-defined morphometric parameters (e.g., shape, porosity, wall thickness) and in their performance validation through thorough control over their behavior (in situ visualization, degradation, new tissue formation, wear, etc.). This review is focused on the use of CT in biomaterial science with the aim of qualitatively and quantitatively assessing the scaffolds’ features and monitoring their behavior following in vivo or in vitro experiments. Furthermore, the paper presents the benefits and limitations regarding the employment of this technique when engineering materials with applications in the biomedical field.

The Impacts of Bedding Strength Parameters on the Micro-Cracking Morphology in Laminated Shale under Uniaxial Compression

The micro-cracking morphology in laminated shale formation plays a critical role in the enhancement of shale gas production, but the impacts of bedding strength parameters on micro-cracking morphology have not been well understood in laminated shale formation. This paper numerically investigated the initiation and evolution of micro-cracking morphology with bedding strength parameters in laminated shale under uniaxial compression. First, a two-dimensional particle flow model (PFC2D) was established for laminated shale. Then, the micro-mechanical parameters of this model were calibrated using stress-strain curves and final fracture morphology measured in the laboratory. Finally, the impacts of bedding strength parameters on the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), crack type and the complexity of fracture network were analyzed quantitatively. Numerical simulation results indicate that the UCS of shale varies linearly with the bedding strength, especially when the shear failure of beddings is dominant. Matrix cracks mainly depend on bedding strength, while the generation of tensile cracks is determined by the shear-to-tensile strength ratio of beddings (STR). The shale with a higher STR is likely to produce a more complex fracture network. Therefore, the bedding strength parameters should be carefully evaluated when the initiation and evolution of micro-cracking morphology in laminated shale formation are simulated.

Numerical Study of Fracture Network Evolution during Nitrogen Fracturing Processes in Shale Reservoirs

This paper develops a numerical model to study fracture network evolution during the nitrogen fracturing process in shale reservoirs. This model considers the differences of incompressible and compressible fluids, shear and tensile failure modes, shale heterogeneity, and the strength and permeability of both shale matrix and bedding planes through the coupling of mechanical-seepage-damage during fracturing fluid injection. The results show that nitrogen fracturing has a lower breakdown pressure and larger seepage zone than hydraulic fracturing under the same injection pressure. Tensile failure was identified as the major reason for the initiation and propagation of fractures. Ignoring the effect of bedding planes, the fracture initiation pressure, breakdown pressure, and fracturing effectiveness reached their maxima when the stress ratio is 1. Under the same strength ratio, the propagation path of the fractures was controlled by the stronger effect that was casused by the bedding angle and stress ratio. With increasing the strength ratio, the fracture number and shearing of the bedding plane increased significantly and the failure pattern changed from tensile-only mode to tensile-shear mode. These analyses indicated that the fracture network of bedding shale was typically induced by the combined impacts of stress ratio, bedding angle and strength ratio.

Method for Visualizing Fractures Induced by Laboratory-Based Hydraulic Fracturing and Its Application to Shale Samples

A better understanding of the process of stimulation by hydraulic fracturing in shale gas and oil reservoirs is necessary for improving resource productivity. However, direct observation of hydraulically stimulated regions including induced fractures has been difficult. In the present study, we develop a new approach for directly visualizing regions of shale specimens impregnated by fluid during hydraulic fracturing. The proposed laboratory method uses a thermosetting resin mixed with a fluorescent substance as a fracturing fluid. After fracturing, the resin is fixed within the specimens by heating, and the cut sections are then observed under ultraviolet light. Based on brightness, we can then distinguish induced fractures and their surrounding regions impregnated by the fluid from other regions not reached by the fluid. Polarization microscope observation clearly reveals the detailed structures of tortuous or branched fractures on the micron scale and interactions between fractures and constituent minerals. The proposed experimental and observation method is useful for understanding the process of stimulation by hydraulic fracturing and its relationship with microscopic rock characteristics, which is important for fracturing design optimization in shale gas and oil resource development.
