Abstract
The supersonic wind tunnel facility SBR-50 at the University of Notre Dame was built in 2015 for experimental research related to shock wave (SW) interactions with obstacles and boundary layers (BL) as well as supersonic combustion and a plasma-based flow control. Currently, the facility provides the following range of flow parameters with a test section area at the nozzle exit of 76.2 × 76.2 mm: Mach number M=2 and 4, total pressure p0= 1–4 bar, stagnation temperature T0= 300–775 K, and typical duration of the steady-state flow t= 0.5–2 s. One distinct feature of the facility is the Ohmic gas heater installed in a long plenum section. Objective of this study is to characterize flow in the SBR-50 facility, specifically the dynamics of the gas temperature. Two measuring methods were applied for collection of a detailed dataset: thermocouple measurements and schlieren-based thermal mark (laser spark) velocimetry. The experimental data are compared with 3D Navier–Stokes modelling of the gas parameters over the entire flowpath. Particularly, this study proves that the original facility schematics (the concept of a virtual piston in the plenum) allow for a longer operation with a constant stagnation temperature compared to a constant plenum volume with adiabatic cooling of the stored gas.

Abstract
Microwave-assisted spark ignition (MAI) is a promising way to enhance the ignition performance of engines under lean conditions. To understand the effect of microwave-induced flow during MAI, the development and morphology of spark-ignited methane-air flame kernel under various microwave pulse parameters are experimentally studied. Experiments are conducted in a constant volume combustion chamber, and flame development is recorded through a high-speed shadowgraph method. Flame area and deformation index are adopted to evaluate the flame characteristic. Results show that increasing the microwave pulse energy from 0 to 150 mJ exhibits a threshold process for expanding the flame kernel area under 0.2 MPa ambient pressure. When the pulse energy is below the threshold of 90 mJ, the microwave enhancing efficiency is much lower than that beyond the threshold. Increasing microwave pulse repetition frequency (PRF) changes the flow on flame surface and raises the absorption efficiency for microwave energy, and thus helps to improve the MAI performance under higher pressures. Hence, 1 kHz pulses cause more obvious flame deformation than those with higher PRF pulses under 0.2 MPa, while this tendency is reversed as the ambient pressure increases to 0.6 MPa. Besides, microwave pulses of different repetition frequencies lead to different flame kernel morphology, implying the various regimes behind the interaction between a microwave and spark kernel.

Abstract
Due to the increasing installed power of the intermittent renewable energy sources in the European Union, increasing the operation flexibility of the generating units in the system is necessary. This is particularly important for systems with relatively large installed power of wind and solar. Plasma technologies can be used for that purpose. Nonetheless, the wide implementation of such technology should be economically justified. This paper shows that the use of plasma systems for increasing the flexibility of power units can be economically feasible, based on the results of a net present value analysis. The cost of the installation itself had a marginal effect on the results of the net present value analysis. Based on the performed analysis, the ability to lower the technical minimum of the power unit and the relationship between such a technical minimum and the installed power of a plasma system can be considered decisive factors influencing the economics of the investment for such an installation. Further research on better means of prediction of the minimum attainable load, which would allow determining the influence of implementation of a plasma system, is recommended. This will be the decisive factor behind future decisions regarding investing in such systems.

Abstract
Scramjet based on solid propellant is a good supplement for the power device of future hypersonic vehicles. A new scramjet combustor configuration using solid fuel, namely, the solid fuel rocket scramjet (SFRSCRJ) combustor is proposed. The numerical study was conducted to simulate a flight environment of Mach 6 at a 25 km altitude. Three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations coupled with shear stress transport (SST) k − ω turbulence model are used to analyze the effects of the cavity and its position on the combustor. The feasibility of the SFRSCRJ combustor with cavity is demonstrated based on the validation of the numerical method. Results show that the scramjet combustor configuration with a backward-facing step can resist high pressure generated by the combustion in the supersonic combustor. The total combustion efficiency of the SFRSCRJ combustor mainly depends on the combustion of particles in the fuel-rich gas. A proper combustion organization can promote particle combustion and improve the total combustion efficiency. Among the four configurations considered, the combustion efficiency of the mid-cavity configuration is the highest, up to about 70%. Therefore, the cavity can effectively increase the combustion efficiency of the SFRSCRJ combustor.
