Mechanism of Capacity Fading in the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 Cathode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

A simulation-driven prediction model for state of charge estimation of electric vehicle lithium battery

Accurately predicting the state of charge (SOC) of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles is crucial for ensuring their stable operation. However, the component values related to SOC in the circuit typically require estimation through parameter identification. This paper proposes a three-stage method for estimating the SOC of lithium batteries in electric vehicles. Firstly, the parameters of the constructed second-order RC circuit are identified using the Forgetting Factor Recursive Least Squares (FFRLS) method. Secondly, an innovative approach is employed to construct a battery simulation model using modal-data fusion method. Finally, the predicted values of the simulation model are corrected using the unscented Kalman filter (UKF). Validation through datasets demonstrates the high precision of this method in parameter identification. Moreover, in the comparison of SOC prediction corrections with Particle Filter (PF), Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), and the proposed UKF on simulated prediction data and experimental test data. The proposed method achieves the lowest root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.0025 for simulation prediction data and 0.0186 for experimental test data. It also maintained its error within 5 % on actual data.

Feasible Energy Density Pushes of Li-Metal vs. Li-Ion Cells

Li-metal batteries are attracting a lot of attention nowadays. However, they are merely an attempt to enhance energy densities by employing a negative Li-metal electrode. Usually, when a Li-metal cell is charged, a certain amount of sacrificial lithium must be added, because irreversible losses per cycle add up much more unfavourably compared to conventional Li-ion cells. When liquid electrolytes instead of solid ones are used, additional electrolyte must also be added because both the lithium of the positive electrode and the liquid electrolyte are consumed during each cycle. Solid electrolytes may present a clever solution to the issue of saving sacrificial lithium and electrolyte, but their additional intrinsic weight and volume must be considered. This poses the important question of if and how much energy density can be gained in realistic scenarios if a switch from Li-ion to rechargeable Li-metal cells is anticipated. This paper calculates various scenarios assuming typical losses per cycle and reveals future e-mobility as a potential application of Li-metal cells. The paper discusses the trade-off if, considering only the push for energy density, liquid electrolytes can become a feasible option in large Li-metal batteries vs. the solid-state approach. This also includes the important aspect of cost.

High-Rate Layered Cathode of Lithium-Ion Batteries through Regulating Three-Dimensional Agglomerated Structure

LiNixCoyMnzO2 (LNCM)-layered materials are considered the most promising cathode for high-energy lithium ion batteries, but suffer from poor rate capability and short lifecycle. In addition, the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 (NCM 111) is considered one of the most widely used LNCM cathodes because of its high energy density and good safety. Herein, a kind of NCM 111 with semi-closed structure was designed by controlling the amount of urea, which possesses high rate capability and long lifespan, exhibiting 140.9 mAh·g−1 at 0.85 A·g−1 and 114.3 mAh·g−1 at 1.70 A·g−1, respectively. The semi-closed structure is conducive to the infiltration of electrolytes and fast lithium ion-transfer inside the electrode material, thus improving the rate performance of the battery. Our work may provide an effective strategy for designing layered-cathode materials with high rate capability.
