Experimental Investigation of Methane Hydrate Induction Time in the Presence of Cassava Peel as a Hydrate Inhibitor

Inhibitory influence of amino acids on the formation kinetics of methane hydrates in oil-water and oil-brine systems

This experimental study evaluates the inhibition performance of kinetic hydrates inhibitors (KHIs) of three amino acids, namely: glycine, proline, and alanine. It includes the performance comparison with the conventional inhibitor i.e., polyvinyl pyrrolidine (PVP) on methane (CH₄) hydrate in oil systems in two different systems, i.e., deionized and brine water systems. The experiments were conducted in a high-pressure hydrate reactor replicating subsea pipeline conditions, i.e., the temperature of 274 K, pressure 8 MPa, and concentration of 1 wt%, by applying the isochoric cooling technique. The formation kinetics results suggest that all the studied amino acids effectively worked as kinetic inhibitors by potentially delaying CH₄ hydrate formations due to their steric hindrance abilities. The interesting phenomenon was observed that the different studied amino acids behave differently in the brine-oil and deionized water-oil systems due to their side chain interaction. In a deionized water-oil system, glycine gives the highest inhibition performance by reducing the hydrate formation risk. On the contrary, in the brine-oil system, proline showed a significant inhibition effect. It should be noted that both glycine and proline were giving almost similar inhibition performance compared to the conventional hydrate inhibitor PVP, however glycine and proline significantly reduced CH₄ consumption into hydrate due to their high surface active under CH₄ conditions, which strengths the surface tension of the liquid/CH4 interface. Furthermore, according to the findings, it shows that increased side alkyl chain lengths of amino acids increase the efficacy of their kinetic hydration inhibition performance due to better surface adsorption abilities. The amino acids' ability to suppress growth is also linked strongly with hydrophobicity and alkyl side chain length. The findings of this study contribute significantly to current efforts to limit gas hydrate formation in offshore pipelines, particularly in oil-dominant pipelines.

Synthesis of Chitosan Derivatives and Their Inhibition Effects on Methane Hydrates

In recent years, the study of natural polymer products such as methane hydrate inhibitors has attracted more and more attention in the scientific research field. In order to achieve environmentally friendly and economical methane hydrate inhibitors with high activity, four chitosan derivatives were successfully synthesized and their methane hydrate inhibition effects were compared with chitosan (CS) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS). Under the conditions of 6 MPa, 1 °C and 400 rpm, the induction time of methane hydrate was prolonged by 7.3 times with the addition of 0.1 wt% CS. It was found that chitosan with high hydrophobicity could effectively prevent methane gas from entering the water solution and reduce the driving force of methane hydrates, resulting in the extension of hydrate induction time. The hydrate inhibition effect of CMCS could be improved by the introduction of hydroxypropyl-3-trimethylamine and N-2-hydroxypropyl-3-isooctyl ether groups based on the enhancement of the molecular hydrophobicity. At the same time, the introduction of the trimethyl quaternary ammonium group increased the ion content in the aqueous solution, which further inhibited the nucleation and growth of methane hydrates. This work is supposed to serve as an inspiration for the further research and development of green kinetic hydrate inhibitors with high-efficiency.

Effective Inhibition of Carbon Steel Corrosion by Waterborne Polyurethane Based on N-tert-Butyl Diethanolamine in 2M HCl: Experimental and Computational Findings

The efficiency of corrosion inhibition for waterborne polyurethane based on N-tert-butyl diethanolamine (tB-WPU) is investigated using different techniques. Corrosion weight loss, open circuit potential experiments, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization measurements show that both a commercial reagent and a polyurethane-based inhibitor prevent corrosion at increasing temperature to 50 °C. At 75 °C, the activity of both reagents is reduced. In stirring conditions, the effectiveness of acid corrosion inhibition (25 °C, 500 ppm) drops abruptly from 89.5% to 60.7%, which is related presumably to the complexity of binding the polymer molecules to the metal surface. As follows from thermodynamic calculations, the adsorption of tB-WPU on the metal surface in 2M HCl can be treated as a physisorption. Model quantum–chemical calculations support the experimental studies and elucidate the nature of steel surface–inhibitor molecule chemical bond, which is realized mainly by carboxyl and amino groups. It is concluded that WPUs can be considered as a perspective alternative to commercial oilfield reagents due to their versatility.

Mesoporous activated carbon yielded from pre-leached cassava peels

The search for alternatives to fossil-based commercial activated carbon (AC) continues to reveal new eco-friendly potential precursors, among which is agricultural waste. The key research aspect in all these endeavors is empirical ascertainment of the core properties of the resultant AC to suit a particular purpose. These properties include: yield, surface area, pore volume, and the active surface groups. It is therefore pertinent to have process conditions controlled and tailored towards these properties for the required resultant AC. Pre-leaching cassava peels with NaOH followed by KOH activation and carbonization at holding temperatures (780 °C) above the melting point of K (760 °C) yielded mesoporous activated carbon with the highest surface area ever reported for cassava peel-based AC. The carbonization temperatures were between 480 and 780 °C in an activation-carbonization stepwise process using KOH as the activator at a KOH:peel ratio of 5:2 (mass basis). A 42% maximum yield of AC was realized along with a total pore volume of 0.756 cm3g-1 and BET surface area of 1684 m2g-1. The AC was dominantly microporous for carbonization temperatures below 780 °C, but a remarkable increase in mesopore volume (0.471 cm3g-1) relative to the micropore volume (0.281 cm3g-1) was observed at 780 °C. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy for the pre-treated cassava peels showed distortion in the C-H bonding depicting possible elaboration of more lignin from cellulose disruption by NaOH. A carboxylate stretch was also observed owing to the reaction of Na+ ions with the carboxyl group in the raw peels. FTIR showed possible absorption bands for the AC between 1425 and 1712 cm-1 wave numbers. Besides the botanical qualities of the cassava peel genotype used, pre-leaching the peels and also increasing holding activation temperature above the boiling point of potassium enabled the modified process of producing highly porous AC from cassava peel. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) imaging showed well-developed hexagonal pores in the resultant AC and intercalated K profile in the carbon matrices, respectively.
