Recent advancements in strategies to improve anaerobic digestion of perennial energy grasses for enhanced methane production

Perennial energy grasses (PEGs) are supposed to be a momentous heading to the development of biomass energy on account of their characteristic superiorities of high yield, strong adaptability and no direct competition with food crops. Anaerobic digestion of PEGs with great biogas-producing potential occupies an irreplaceable status despite a variety of pathways for conversion to renewable energy. However, efficient digestion of PEGs suffers from severe challenges in connection with feedstock properties such as recalcitrant structures. This review highlights recent research in anaerobic digestion of PEGs and focuses on essential aspects enhancing anaerobic digestion performance: types and properties of grasses, diverse pretreatments, various co-feedstocks for co-digestion, dosing of different additives, and improvements in reactors. General discussions on the future prospects of anaerobic digestion of PEGs are proposed. Overcoming knowledge gaps and technical limitations will facilitate further application of PEGs on an industrial scale.

A perspective on the combination of alkali pre-treatment with bioaugmentation to improve biogas production from lignocellulose biomass

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a bioprocess technology that integrates into circular economy systems, which produce renewable energy and biofertilizer whilst reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, improvements in biogas production efficiency are needed in dealing with lignocellulosic biomass. The state-of-the-art of AD technology is discussed, with emphasis on feedstock digestibility and operational difficulty. Solutions to these challenges including for pre-treatment and bioaugmentation are reviewed. This article proposes an innovative integrated system combining alkali pre-treatment, temperature-phased AD and bioaugmentation techniques. The integrated system as modelled has a targeted potential to achieve a biodegradability index of 90% while increasing methane production by 47% compared to conventional AD. The methane productivity may also be improved by a target reduction in retention time from 30 to 20 days. This, if realized has the potential to lower energy production cost and the levelized cost of abatement to facilitate an increased resource of sustainable commercially viable biomethane.

Influences of size reduction, hydration, and thermal-assisted hydration pretreatment to increase the biogas production from Napier grass and Napier silage

Pretreatment of lignocellulose materials prior to biogas production is required to minimize biomass recalcitrance and increase biomass digestibility. In this study, the effects of particle size reduction, hydration, and thermal-assisted hydration on Napier grass and silage for methane production were evaluated. Compared to the 4.75-mm particle size Napier grass and silage, 0.425-mm Napier grass and silage showed 72% and 46% increases in methane yield, respectively, whereas hydration pretreatment using hydrogenic effluent increased the methane yields from Napier grass and silage by 23% and 56%, respectively. Superior effects were observed when Napier grass and silage were pretreated with thermal-assisted hydration using hydrogenic effluent for 60 and 15 min, respectively, resulting in methane yields of 385 and 331 mL CH₄/g substrate_added. The results indicate that size reduction accompanied by thermal-assisted hydration using hydrogenic effluent as a hydration medium significantly improved the biodegradability of Napier grass and silage.
