Anti-Agglomeration Effects of Biodegradable Surfactants from Natural Sources on Natural Gas Hydrate Formation

Experimental study on the effect of quaternary ammonium salt + monoethylene glycol compound to methane hydrate agglomeration in oil-water system

Natural gas hydrate has been a critical risk to the safety of offshore oil and gas well test and subsea transportation. Herein, the effect of three quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) surfactants with monoethylene glycol (MEG) to methane hydrate agglomeration in water-oil system was experimentally studied by a rocking cell. Based on the hydrate volume fraction and the slider trajectory, a classification method of the gas hydrate anti-agglomerants was established. All the QASs in this work show the capability of reducing hydrate agglomeration, among which N1,N3-didodecyl-N1,N1,N3,N3-tetramethylpropane-1,3-diaminium chloride (AA-2) has the best anti-agglomerating performance, and the slider moved at a large trajectory of 61-174 mm. The three QASs were compounded with 5, 10, and 15 wt% (based on water) MEG, respectively. Experimental results showed that AA-2 compounded with MEG (10 wt%) can effectively prevent hydrate agglomeration. The slider moved in the cell at the full trajectory range, showing the compound of grade A performance. The compound of QAS and MEG shows a synergistic effect. The addition of QAS can significantly reduce the required MEG dosage for the hydrate blockage prevention than the MEG only situation. Considering the economic factors of the filed hydrate management, the combination application of QAS + MEG may provide a promising option.

Interfacial Adhesion Forces of Hydrate Particles in the Presence of Hydrate Inhibitors

Hydrate inhibitors are traditionally utilized to prevent hydrate plugging. In this study, the adhesion forces of cyclopentane (CP) hydrates with thermodynamic inhibitors (ethanol, urea, and NaCl) and anti-agglomerant inhibitors [sorbitan monooleate (Span 80) and lecithin] were measured to understand the effects of hydrate inhibitors on the adhesion forces of hydrates. It was found that the thermodynamic inhibitors increased the early hydrate interparticle adhesion force due to the enhanced liquid bridge force. However, the liquid bridge acted as a lubricant layer to prevent the irreversible agglomeration of hydrate after long-term contact. The hydrate adhesion forces decreased by 90.5-93.0% and 76.6-92.7% with an increase in the concentration of Span 80 and lecithin, respectively, from 0.1 to 1 wt %. Both rough morphology and low interfacial tension contributed to the adhesion force decrease of hydrate after the addition of anti-agglomerant inhibitors. The results may be helpful for understanding the mechanism of influence and quantifying the impact of hydrate inhibitors on hydrate interparticle adhesion force.

Effective Inhibition of Carbon Steel Corrosion by Waterborne Polyurethane Based on N-tert-Butyl Diethanolamine in 2M HCl: Experimental and Computational Findings

The efficiency of corrosion inhibition for waterborne polyurethane based on N-tert-butyl diethanolamine (tB-WPU) is investigated using different techniques. Corrosion weight loss, open circuit potential experiments, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization measurements show that both a commercial reagent and a polyurethane-based inhibitor prevent corrosion at increasing temperature to 50 °C. At 75 °C, the activity of both reagents is reduced. In stirring conditions, the effectiveness of acid corrosion inhibition (25 °C, 500 ppm) drops abruptly from 89.5% to 60.7%, which is related presumably to the complexity of binding the polymer molecules to the metal surface. As follows from thermodynamic calculations, the adsorption of tB-WPU on the metal surface in 2M HCl can be treated as a physisorption. Model quantum–chemical calculations support the experimental studies and elucidate the nature of steel surface–inhibitor molecule chemical bond, which is realized mainly by carboxyl and amino groups. It is concluded that WPUs can be considered as a perspective alternative to commercial oilfield reagents due to their versatility.
