Studies on the Gasification Performance of Sludge Cake Pre-Treated by Hydrothermal Carbonization

Recent advances in catalyst design, performance, and challenges of metal-heteroatom-co-doped biochar as peroxymonosulfate activator for environmental remediation

The escalation of global water pollution due to emerging pollutants has gained significant attention. To address this issue, catalytic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation technology has emerged as a promising treatment approach for effectively decontaminating a wide range of pollutants. Recently, modified biochar has become an increasingly attractive as PMS activator. Metal-heteroatom-co-doped biochar (MH-BC) has emerged as a promising catalyst that can provide enhanced performance over heteroatom-doped and metal-doped biochar due to the synergism between metal and heteroatom in promoting PMS activation. Therefore, this review aims to discuss the fabrication pathways (i.e., internal vs external doping and pre-vs post-modification) and key parameters (i.e., source of precursors, synthesis methods, and synthesis conditions) affecting the performance of MH-BC as PMS activator. Subsequently, an overview of all the possible PMS activation pathways by MH-BC is provided. Subsequently, Also, the detection, identification, and quantification of several reactive species (such as, •OH, SO4•-, O2•-, 1O2, and high valent oxo species) generated in the catalytic PMS system by MH-BC are also evaluated. Lastly, the underlying challenges associated with poor stability, the lack of understanding regarding the interaction between metal and heteroatom during PMS activation and quantification of radicals in multi-ROS system are also deliberated.

Synthesis of modified sludge biochar for flue gas denitration: Biochar properties, synergistic efficiency and mechanism

Biochar has been recommended as a carbon material with high porosity, rich functional groups, and low cost for flue gas denitration. In this study, five different biochar materials, including original sludge biochar (SC), the KOH-impregnated biochar (SCK), the biochar of SCK washing by ultra-water (SCK-W), the H2SO4-impregnated biochar (SCS), and the biochar of SCS washing by ultra-water (SCS-W), prepared using a one-step activation method were applied to remove NO from flue gases, acting as both reductants and catalysts. The results indicate that the SCK-700 can lead to the highest NO conversion of 100% at 325 °C, and can suppress the acidic gas generation compared with SCS. The order of reduction capacity at 300-400 °C was SCK-700 > SCK-W-700 > SC-700 > SCS-700 > SCS-W-700. Furthermore, the kinetics indicated that adsorption capacity enhanced with the rise in temperature, and that SCK-700 had the largest adsorption capacity, reaching 337.15 mg/g at 400 °C.

Energy Analysis of an Integrated Plant: Fluidized Bed Steam Gasification of Hydrothermally Treated Biomass Coupled to Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

An innovative process based on hydrothermal carbonization, gasification, and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) technologies was developed using a commercial process simulation software called ASPEN Plus. The object of this work is to study plant efficiency under various operating conditions. The hydrothermal pre-treatment (HTC) at 200 and 250 °C was modelled as a black box based on the experimental results. The gasifier was modelled as a single reactor vessel with both the fluidized bed steam gasification of solid fuel and the hot gas cleaning system. The SOFC was modelled as a simple grey box with the ASPEN Plus blocks. The effect of HTC temperature and steam/carbon (S/C) ratio on the syngas composition and yield and plant efficiency was studied. The results show that the gasification of hydrochar obtained at 200 °C with S/C ratio of 0.6 gives the best results, namely an energy output of SOFC equal to 1.81 kW/kgBiomass, and overall process efficiency of 36%.

Gasification Applicability of Korean Municipal Waste Derived Solid Fuel: A Comparative Study

Gaining energy independence by utilizing new and renewable energy resources has become imperative for Korea. Energy recovery from Korean municipal solid waste (MSW) could be a promising option to resolve the issue, as Korean MSW is highly recyclable due to its systematic separation, collection and volume-based waste disposal system. In this study, gasification experiments were conducted on Korean municipal waste-derived solid fuel (SRF) using a fixed bed reactor by varying the equivalence ratio (ER) to assess the viability of syngas production. Experiments were also conducted on coal and biomass under similar conditions to compare the experimental results, as the gasification applicability of coal and biomass are long-established. Experimental results showed that Korean SRF could be used to recover energy in form of syngas. In particular, 50.94% cold gas efficiency and 54.66% carbon conversion ratio with a lower heating value of 12.57 MJ/Nm3 can be achieved by gasifying the SRF at 0.4 ER and 900 °C. However, compared to coal and biomass, the syngas efficiency of Korean SRF was less, which can be resolved by operating the gasification processes at high temperatures. If proper research and development activities are conducted on Korean SRF, it could be a good substitute for fossil fuels in the future.

Syngas Production, Clean-Up and Wastewater Management in a Demo-Scale Fixed-Bed Updraft Biomass Gasification Unit

This paper presents the experimental development at demonstration scale of an integrated gasification system fed with wood chips. The unit is based on a fixed-bed, updraft and air-blown gasifier—with a nominal capacity of 5 MWth—equipped with a wet scrubber for syngas clean-up and an integrated chemical and physical wastewater management system. Gasification performance, syngas composition and temperature profile are presented for the optimal operating conditions and with reference to two kinds of biomass used as primary fuels, i.e., stone pine and eucalyptus from local forests (combined heat and power generation from this kind of fuel represents a good opportunity to exploit distributed generation systems that can be part of a new energy paradigm in the framework of the circular economy). The gasification unit is characterised by a high efficiency (about 79–80%) and an operation stability during each test. Particular attention has been paid to the optimisation of an integrated double stage wastewater management system—which includes an oil skimmer and an activated carbon adsorption filter—designed to minimise both liquid residues and water make-up. The possibility to recycle part of the separated oil and used activated carbon to the gasifier has been also evaluated.
