Experimental Assessment of Flow, Performance, and Loads for Tidal Turbines in a Closely-Spaced Array

Abstract

A new white-light volumetric flow measurement technique is presented that can be used in large-scale facilities. The technique enables large volumes to be measured with high temporal and spatial resolution and without the need for a class-4 laser. This LED-based Lagrangian particle tracking velocimetry is demonstrated by measuring the tip vortex formation and the near wake of a 1.2 m diameter tidal turbine in a 25 m diameter, 2 m deep tank. Seven streamwise-distributed volumes of interest are combined, each 334 mm long, 244 mm wide and 140 mm deep, reaching up to one diameter downstream of the turbine. The system does not require re-calibration when moved. By assuming a periodic flow field, a phase-averaged flow field was reconstructed with a temporal resolution of 3.9 ms and a spatial resolution of 5.4 mm. The large volume and high time and spatial resolution could enable key research questions to be addressed on high-Reynolds-number flows and could provide valuable benchmark data for numerical model development and code validation.

Experimental Data of Bottom Pressure and Free Surface Elevation including Wave and Current Interactions

Force plates are commonly used in tank testing to measure loads acting on the foundation of a structure. These targeted measurements are overlaid by the hydrostatic and dynamic pressure acting on the force plate induced by the waves and currents. This paper presents a dataset of bottom force measurement with a six degree-of-freedom force plate (AMTI OR6-7 1000, surface area 0.464 m × 0.508 m) combined with synchronised measurements of surface elevation and current velocity. The data cover wave frequencies between 0.2 to 0.7 Hz and wave directions between 0∘ and 180∘. These variations are provided for current speeds of 0 and 0.2 m/s and a variation of the current in the absence of waves covering 0 to 0.45 m/s. The dataset can be utilised as a validation dataset for models predicting bottom pressure based on free surface elevation. Additionally, the dataset provides the wave- and current-induced load acting on the specific load cell at a fixed water depth of 2 m, which can subsequently be removed to obtain the often-desired measurement of structural loads.

Using Experimentally Validated Navier-Stokes CFD to Minimize Tidal Stream Turbine Power Losses Due to Wake/Turbine Interactions

Tidal stream turbines fixed on the seabed can harness the power of tides at locations where the bathymetry and/or coastal geography result in high kinetic energy levels of the flood and/or neap currents. In large turbine arrays, however, avoiding interactions between upstream turbine wakes and downstream turbine rotors may be hard or impossible, and, therefore, tidal array layouts have to be designed to minimize the power losses caused by these interactions. For the first time, using Navier-Stokes computational fluid dynamics simulations which model the turbines with generalized actuator disks, two sets of flume tank experiments of an isolated turbine and arrays of up to four turbines are analyzed in a thorough and comprehensive fashion to investigate these interactions and the power losses they induce. Very good agreement of simulations and experiments is found in most cases. The key novel finding of this study is the evidence that the flow acceleration between the wakes of two adjacent turbines can be exploited not only to increase the kinetic energy available to a turbine working further downstream in the accelerated flow corridor, but also to reduce the power losses of said turbine due to its rotor interaction with the wake produced by a fourth turbine further upstream. By making use of periodic array simulations, it is also found that there exists an optimal lateral spacing of the two adjacent turbines, which maximizes the power of the downstream turbine with respect to when the two adjacent turbines are absent or further apart. This is accomplished by trading off the amount of flow acceleration between the wakes of the lateral turbines, and the losses due to shear and mixing of the front turbine wake and the wakes of the two lateral turbines.

Roll Motion of a Water Filled Floating Cylinder—Additional Experimental Verification

Understanding the behaviour of water filled bodies is important from an applied engineering perspective when understanding the sea-keeping performance of certain floating platforms and vessels. Even by assuming that the deformation is negligible small in relation to the motion of the structure, these fluid-structure-fluid interactions are challenging to model, both physically and numerically, and there is a notable lack of reference data sets and studies to support the validation of this work. Most of the existing information is highly specific to certain hulls forms, or is limited to small motions. A previous study addressed this by modelling a floating cylinder (giving a more generic case) with roll and pitch motions in excess of 20°. The presented experiment expands on that work to further investigate the previously observed switch between pitch and roll in the cylinder under wave action as induced by the sloshing of the internal water volume. An additional experimental investigation, focused on a single draft, was conducted to test open research questions from the previous study. Here we show that the roll response of the water filled cylinder is repeatable, independent of the tank position and wave amplitude, provided the observation time is long enough to capture the fully developed motion response of the floating object. The mooring system used comprised four soft lines connected on two points on the cylinder. This arrangement resulted in slightly different restoring forces in different wave directions. A relative change of the wave direction by 90° led to a larger wave frequency band in which the roll motion occurred. These cases were, again, also conducted with the solid ballast. Both sets of data provide an interesting validation case for future work on water ballast inside a floating object.

Single-Beam Acoustic Doppler Profiler and Co-Located Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter Flow Velocity Data

Acoustic Doppler Profilers (ADPs) are routinely used to measure flow velocity in the ocean, enabling multi-points measurement along a profile while Acoustic Doppler Velocimeters (ADVs) are laboratory instruments that provide very precise point velocity measurement. The experimental set-up allows laboratory comparison of measurement from these two instruments. Simultaneous multi-point measurements of velocity along the horizontal tank profile from Single-Beam Acoustic Doppler Profiler (SB-ADP) were compared against multiple co-located point measurements from an ADV. Measurements were performed in the FloWave Ocean Energy Research Facility at the University of Edinburgh at flow velocities between 0.6 ms − 1 and 1.2 ms − 1 . This paper describes the data; the analysis of the inter-instrument comparison is presented in an associated Sensors paper by the same authors. This data-set contains (a) time series of raw SB-ADP uni-directional velocity measurements along a 10 m tank profile binned into 54 measurements cells and (b) ADV point measurements of three-directional velocity time series recorded in beam coordinates at selected locations along the profile. Associated with the data are instrument generated quality data, metadata and user-derived quality flags. An analysis of the quality of SB-ADP data along the profile is presented. This data-set provides multiple contemporaneous velocity measurements along the tank profile, relevant for correlation statistics, length-scale calculations and validation of numerical models simulating flow hydrodynamics in circular test facilities.

On the Use of a Single Beam Acoustic Current Profiler for Multi-Point Velocity Measurement in a Wave and Current Basin

Harnessing the energy of tidal currents has huge potential as a source of clean renewable energy. To do so in a reliable and cost effective way, it is critical to understand the interaction between tidal turbines, waves, and turbulent currents in the ocean. Scaled testing in a tank test provides a controlled, realistic, and highly reproducible down-scaled open ocean environment, and it is a key step in gaining this understanding. Knowledge of the hydrodynamic conditions during tests is critical and measurements at multiple locations are required to accurately characterise spatially varying flow in test tank facilities. The paper presents a laboratory technique using an acoustic velocimetry instrument, the range over-which measurements are acquired being more akin to open water applications. This enables almost simultaneous multi-point measurements of uni-directional velocity along a horizontal profile. Velocity measurements have been obtained from a horizontally mounted Single Beam Acoustic Doppler (SB-ADP) profiler deployed in the FloWave Ocean Energy Research Facility at the University of Edinburgh. These measurements have been statistically compared with point measurements obtained while using a co-located Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). Measurements were made with both instruments under flow velocities varying from 0.6 ms⁻¹ to 1.2 ms⁻¹, showing that flow higher than 1 ms⁻¹ was more suitable. Using a SB-ADP has shown the advantage of gaining 54 simultaneous measurement points of uni-directional velocity, covering a significant area with a total distance of 10 m of the test-tank, at a measurement frequency of 16 Hz. Of those measurement points, 41 were compared with co-located ADV measurements covering 8 m of the profile for a tank nominal flow velocity of 0.8 ms⁻¹, and four distributed locations were chosen to to carry out the study at 0.6 ms⁻¹, 1.0 ms⁻¹, and 1.2 ms⁻¹. The comparison with the ADV measurement showed a 2% relative bias on average.
