Glucose-Oxygen Biofuel Cell with Biotic and Abiotic Catalysts: Experimental Research and Mathematical Modeling

Biodegradation of petroleum wastewater for the production of bioelectricity using activated sludge biomass

Objective

This research is based on the treatment of petroleum wastewater (PWW) with pretreated activated sludge for the production of electricity and removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) using microbial fuel cell (MFC).

Methods

The application of the MFC system which uses activated sludge biomass (ASB) as a substrate resulted in the reduction of COD by 89.5% of the original value. It generated electricity equivalent to 8.18 mA/m2 which can be reused again. This would solve the majority of environmental crises which we are facing today.

Results

This study discusses the application of ASB to enhance the degradation of PWW for the production of a power density of 1012.95 mW/m2 when a voltage of 0.75 V (voltage) is applied at 30:70% of ASB when MFC is operated in a continuous mode. Microbial biomass growth was catalyzed using activated sludge biomass. The growth of microbes was observed by scanning through an electron microscope. Through oxidation in the MFC system, bioelectricity is generated which is used in the cathode chamber. Furthermore, the MFC operated using ASB in a ratio of 35 with the current density, which decreased to 494.76 mW/m2 at 10% ASB.

Application

Our experiments demonstrate that the efficiency of the MFC system can generate bioelectricity and treat petroleum wastewater by using activated sludge biomass.

Immobilizing Enzymes on a Commercial Polymer: Performance Analysis of a GOx-Laccase Based Enzymatic Biofuel Cell Assembly

Enzymatic Biofuel Cell (EBC) represents a promising green source since it is capable of harvesting electricity from renewable and abundantly available biofuels using enzymes as catalysts. Nevertheless, nowadays long-term stability and low power output are currently the main concerns. To this end, several research studies focus on using complex tridimensional and highly expensive nanostructures as electrode support for enzymes. This increases cell performance whilst drastically reducing the economic feasibility needed for industrial viability. Thus, this paper analyzes a novel flow-based EBC consisting of covalent immobilized GOx (bioanode) and Laccase (biocathode) on a commercial flat conductive polymer. A suitable immobilization technique based on covalent ligands is carried out to enhance EBC durability. The experimental characterization demonstrates that the cell generates power over three weeks, reaching 590 mV and 2.41 µW cm−2 as maximum open circuit voltage and power density, respectively. The most significant contributions of this configuration are definitely ease of implementation, low cost, high scalability, and reproducibility. Therefore, such a design can be considered a step forward in the viable EBC industrialization process for a wide range of applications.

A Self-Charging Supercapacitor for a Patch-Type Glucose Sensor

Wearable electronic medical devices measuring continuous biological signals for early disease diagnosis should be small and lightweight for consecutive usability. As a result, there has been an increasing need for new energy supply systems that provide continuous power without any interruption to the operation of the medical devices associated with the use of conventional batteries. In this work, we developed a patch-type self-charging supercapacitor that can measure biological signals with a continuous energy supply without batteries. The glucose oxidase coated on the surface of the microneedle-type glucose sensor encounters glucose in the interstitial fluids of the human body. Electrons created by glucose oxidation operate the self-powered system in which charging begins with the generation of potential differences in supercapacitor electrodes. In an 11 mM glucose solution, the self-powered solid-state supercapacitors (SPSCs) showed a power density of 0.62 mW/cm², which resulted in self-charging of the supercapacitor. The power density produced by each SPSC with a drop of 11 mM glucose solution was higher than that produced by glucose-based biofuel cells. Consequently, the all-in-one self-powered glucose sensor, with the aid of an Arduino Uno board and appropriate programming, effectively distinguished normal, prediabetic, and diabetic levels from 0.5 mL of solutions absorbed in a laboratory skin model.
