Load Shifting and Peak Clipping for Reducing Energy Consumption in an Indian University Campus

Development of an Algorithm for Regulating the Load Schedule of Educational Institutions Based on the Forecast of Electric Consumption within the Framework of Application of the Demand Response

There is a tendency to increase the use of demand response technology in the Russian Federation along with other developing countries, covering not only large industries, but also individual households and organizations. Reducing peak loads of electricity consumption and increasing energy efficient use of equipment in the power system is achieved by applying demand management technology based on modeling and predicting consumer behavior in an educational institution. The study proposes to consider the possibility of participating in the concept of demand management of educational institutions with a typical workload schedule of the work week. For the study, statistical data of open services and sources, Russian and foreign research on the use of digital and information technologies, analytical methods, methods of mathematical modeling, methods of analysis, and generalization of data and statistical methods of data processing are used. An algorithm for collecting and processing power consumption data and a load planning algorithm were developed, including all levels of interaction between devices. A comparison was made between the values of the maximum daily consumption before and after optimization, as well as the magnitude of the decrease in the maximum consumption after applying the genetic algorithm. The developed algorithm has the ability to scale, which will increase the effect of using the results of this study to more significant values. Load switching helps to reduce peak consumption charges, which often represent a significant portion of the electricity cost.

An Incentive-Based Implementation of Demand Side Management in Power Systems

The growing demand for electricity runs counter to European-level goals, which include activities aimed at sustainable development and environmental protection. In this context, efficient consumption of electricity attracts much research interest nowadays. One environment friendly solution to meet increased demand lies in the deployment of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in the network and in mobilizing the active participation of consumers in reducing the peak of demand, thus smoothing the overall load curve. This paper addresses the issue of efficient and economical use of electricity from the Demand Side Management (DSM) perspective and presents an implementation of a fully-parameterized and explicitly constrained incentive-based demand response program The program uses the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm and demonstrates the potential advantages of integrating RES while supporting two-way communication between energy production and consumption and two-way power exchange between the main grid and the RES.

Real-Time Load Variability Control Using Energy Storage System for Demand-Side Management in South Korea

In today’s power systems, the widespread adoption of smart grid applications requires sophisticated control of load variability for effective demand-side management (DSM). Conventional Energy Storage System (ESS)-based DSM methods in South Korea are limited to real-time variability control owing to difficulties with model development using customers’ load profiles from sampling with higher temporal resolution. Herein, this study thus proposes a method of controlling the variability of customers’ load profiles for real-time DSM using customer-installed ESSs. To optimize the reserved capacity for the proposed maximum demand control within ESSs, this study also proposes a hybrid method of load generation, which synthesizes approaches based on Markov Transition Matrix (MTM) and Artificial Neuron Network (ANN) to estimate load variations every 15 min and, in turn reserve capacity in ESSs. The proposed ESS-based DSM strategy primarily reserves capacity in ESSs based on estimated variation in load, and performs real-time maximum demand control with the reserved capacity during scheduled peak shaving operations. To validate the proposed methods, this study used load profiles accumulated from industrial and general (i.e., commercial) customers under the time-of-use (TOU) rate. Simulation verified the improved performance of the proposed ESS-based DSM method for all customers, and results of Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K–S) testing indicate advances in the proposed hybrid estimation beyond the stand-alone estimation using the MTM- or ANN-based approach.

Intelligent Transition Control between Grid-Connected and Standalone Modes of Three-Phase Grid-Integrated Distributed Generation Systems

This paper proposes an intelligent seamless transition controller for smooth transition between grid-connected (GC) and standalone modes of distributed generation (DG) units in the grid. The development of this seamless controller contributes to two main processes in the transition modes: the synchronization process and an islanding process. For the synchronization process, the stationary reference frame phase-locked loop (SRF-PLL) associated with the voltage source inverter (VSI) is modified using the frequency, voltage deviation, and phase angle information. Furthermore, the islanding process is classified as intentional and unintentional islanding scenarios for achieving efficient transition control. Here, the intentional islanding process is achieved with the information that is available in the system due to the planned disconnection. For the unintentional islanding process, a fuzzy inference system (FIS) is used to modify the conventional droop control using the information of change in active power, voltage, and frequency. To identify the action of the proposed approach during the transition process, numerical simulations are conducted with the hardware-in-loop (HIL) simulator by developing a 10kWp three-phase grid-connected DG system. The results identified the efficient control of the VSI for both islanding and grid connection processes. In the islanding conditions, the proposed controller provides advantage with less detection and disconnection time, and during synchronization, it instantly minimizes the phase-angle deviation to achieve efficient control.
