Mature Landfill Leachate as a Medium for Hydrodynamic Cavitation of Brewery Spent Grain

The Effect of Modifying Canadian Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) Biomass with Ammonia and Epichlorohydrin on the Sorption Efficiency of Anionic Dyes from Water Solutions

This study examined the effect of modifying Canadian goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) biomass on its sorption capacity of Reactive Black 5 (RB5) and Reactive Yellow 84 anionic dyes. The scope of the research included the characteristics of sorbents (FTIR, elementary analysis, pH_PZC), the effect of pH on dye sorption efficiency, sorption kinetics, and the maximum sorption capacity (describing the data with Langmuir 1 and 2 and Freundlich models). FTIR analyses showed the appearance of amine functional groups in the materials modified with ammonia water, which is indicative of the sorbent amination process. The amination efficiency was higher in the case of materials pre-activated with epichlorohydrin, which was confirmed by elemental analysis and pH_PZC values. The sorption efficiency of RB5 and RY84 on the tested sorbents was the highest in the pH range of 2-3. The sorption capacity of the goldenrod biomass pre-activated with epichlorohydrin and then aminated with ammonia water was 71.30 mg/g and 59.29 mg/g in the case of RB5 and RY84, respectively, and was higher by 2970% and 2510%, respectively, compared to the unmodified biomass. Amination of biomass pre-activated with epichlorohydrin can increase its sorption capacity, even by several dozen times.

Activated sludge microbial communities and hydrolytic potential in a full-scale SBR system treating landfill leachate

Landfill leachate, due to its recalcitrant nature and toxicity, poses a serious environmental threat, which requires the implementation of effective treatment processes. In this work, a full-scale treatment system consisting of two Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBRs) was used for the processing of landfill leachate of intermediate to mature age (BOD/COD ratio of 0.16). Biosystem operation resulted in BOD₅, COD and TKN removal efficiencies of 81%, 39% and 76%, respectively, whereas the low residual NO₃^--N concentration in the effluent (4.01 ± 0.10 mg/L) was indicative of the efficient denitrification process. Assessment of hydrolytic potential of activated sludge revealed high endocellular and extracellular lipase activities, which reached values up to 206 and 141 U/g protein respectively, possibly as the consequence of plastics degradation during maturation process. Implementation of Illumina sequencing indicated the predominance of Alphaproteobacteria, accompanied by members of Bacteroidetes, Betaproteobacteria and Chloroflexi. Paracoccus was the predominant genus identified, followed by representatives of the genera Bellilinea, Flavobacterium, Thauera and Truepera. Nitrosomonas was the major ammonia-oxidizing bacterium (AOB), while nitrite oxidation was mainly achieved by the uncultured nitrite-oxidizing bacterium (NOB) Candidatus Nitrotoga.

A combined anaerobic digestion system for energetic brewery spent grain application in co-digestion with a sewage sludge

In the present study, a combined technology for energetic brewery spent grain (BSG) use in co-digestion with sewage sludge (SS) was presented. A holistic approach that includes the impact of co-substrates and their carriers on the anaerobic digestion (AD) process, and the energetic aspects, was involved. Prior to AD, BSG was pretreated involving the hydrodynamic cavitation (HC); two different carriers were applied: MPW (municipal pre-settled wastewater) and mature landfill leachate (MLL). An orifice plate with a conical concentric hole of 3/10 mm (inlet/outlet diameter) was applied as cavitation device. The initial pressure was 7 bar and the number of recirculation passes through the cavitation zone was 30. The AD experiments were performed in semi-flow reactors, under mesophilic conditions at HRT of 20 and 21 d. In both co-digestion series, the constant co-substrate dose of 6% v/v was adopted. In the presence of cavitated BSG and MPW, a significant increase in biogas/methane production was provided as compared to SS mono-digestion, with the related improvement in kinetic constant by 3.5%. The average biogas yield was 0.48 ± 0.03 m³ kg^-1 VS added, while in the control run 0.41 ± 0.03 m³ kg^-1 VS added. Using cavitated BSG and MLL, such a beneficial effect was not observed. In both co-digestion series, slightly lower VS removal (as for the control) and stable process performance occurred. Moreover, the improved energy balance was provided. Due to the technological aspects, only co-digestion of cavitated BSG and MPW with SS is recommended for implementation into a full-scale.
