Stationary, Second Use Battery Energy Storage Systems and Their Applications: A Research Review

Charting the electric vehicle battery reuse and recycling network in North America

As electric vehicle (EV) sales grow across the world, a common question arises: "what happens to the batteries?" Using expert elicitation, this study identifies the current pathways for retired EV batteries in the United States and Canada and anticipates how the network might evolve in the future. The majority of end-of-life (EOL) EVs are currently managed within the manufacturer and dealership network, but more will enter the independent afterlife market as growing volumes reach EOL out-of-warranty. The interviews indicate that safety, transportation, and accessible information about battery composition and remaining capacity are critical issues across sectors. Participants demonstrated a strong commitment to creating a closed-loop value chain, motivating novel partnerships between recyclers and producers. At the same time, the value of EOL batteries as a material supply source may create competition between recycling and repurposing in the short term. State and federal governments are implementing policies to facilitate access to information and incentivize domestic manufacturing, but compared to other countries, the US lacks a mechanism to ensure that batteries will be collected and recycled. In addition, there is no national tracking system that would provide more robust data on LIB management. Multiple participants noted that the network handles the majority of EOL batteries without significant policy intervention. However, at present, the system depends the economics of reuse and recycling when accounting for the cost of collection and processing, which creates a risk of stranded batteries and/or wasted materials for packs that are lower-value or difficult to access.

A Multi-Objective Co-Design Optimization Framework for Grid-Connected Hybrid Battery Energy Storage Systems: Optimal Sizing and Selection of Technology

This paper develops a multi-objective co-design optimization framework for the optimal sizing and selection of battery and power electronics in hybrid battery energy storage systems (HBESSs) connected to the grid. The co-design optimization approach is crucial for such a complex system with coupled subcomponents. To this end, a nondominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is used for optimal sizing and selection of technologies in the design of the HBESS, considering design parameters such as cost, efficiency, and lifetime. The interoperable framework is applied considering three first-life battery cells and one second-life battery cell for forming two independent battery packs as a hybrid battery unit and considers two power conversion architectures for interfacing the hybrid battery unit to the grid with different power stages and levels of modularity. Finally, the globally best HBESS system obtained as the output of the framework is made up of LTO first-life and LFP second-life cells and enables a total cost of ownership (TCO) reduction of 29.6% compared to the baseline.

A critical review of the circular economy for lithium-ion batteries and photovoltaic modules - status, challenges, and opportunities

To meet net-zero emissions and cost targets for power production, recent analysis indicates that photovoltaic (PV) capacity in the United States could exceed 1 TW by 2050 alongside comparable levels of energy storage capacity, mostly from batteries. For comparison, the total U.S. utility-scale power capacity from all energy sources in 2020 was 1.2 TW, of which solar satisfied approximately 3%. With such massive scales of deployment, questions have arisen regarding issues of material supply for manufacturing, end-of-life management of technologies, environmental impacts across the life cycle, and economic costs to both individual consumers and society at large. A set of solutions to address these issues center on the development of a circular economy - shifting from a take-make-waste linear economic model to one that retains the value of materials and products as long as possible, recovering materials at end of life to recirculate back into the economy. With limited global experience, scholars and practitioners have begun to investigate circular economy pathways, focusing on applying novel technologies and analytical methods to fast-growing sectors like renewable energy. This critical review aims to synthesize the growing literature to identify key insights, gaps, and opportunities for research and implementation of a circular economy for two of the leading technologies that enable the transition to a renewable energy economy: solar PV and lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). We apply state-of-the-science systematic literature review procedures to critically analyze over 3,000 publications on the circular economy of solar PV and LIBs, categorizing those that pass a series of objective screens in ways that can illuminate the current state of the art, highlight existing impediments to a circular economy, and recommend future technological and analytical research. We conclude that while neither PV nor LIB industries have reached a circular economy, they are both on a path towards increased circularity. Based on our assessment of the state of current literature and scientific understanding, we recommend research move beyond its prior emphasis on recycling technology development to more comprehensively investigate other CE strategies, more holistically consider economic, environmental and policy aspects of CE strategies, increase leveraging of digital information systems that can support acceleration towards a CE, and to continue to study CE-related aspects of LIB and PV markets.

The Impacts of Battery Electric Vehicles on the Power Grid: A Monte Carlo Method Approach

Balancing energy demand and supply will become an even greater challenge considering the ongoing transition from traditional fuel to electric vehicles (EV). The management of this task will heavily depend on the pace of the adoption of light-duty EVs. Electric vehicles have seen their market share increase worldwide; the same is happening in Portugal, partly because the government has kept incentives for consumers to purchase EVs, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The consequent shift to EVs entails various challenges for the distribution network, including coping with the expected growing demand for power. This article addresses this concern by presenting a case study of an area comprising 20 municipalities in Northern Portugal, for which battery electric vehicles (BEV) sales and their impact on distribution networks are estimated within the 2030 horizon. The power required from the grid is estimated under three BEV sales growth deterministic scenarios based on a daily consumption rate resulting from the combination of long- and short-distance routes. A Monte Carlo computational simulation is run to account for uncertainty under severe EV sales growth. The analysis is carried out considering three popular BEV models in Portugal, namely the Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3, and Renault Zoe. Their impacts on the available power of the distribution network are calculated for peak and off-peak hours. The results suggest that the current power grid capacity will not cope with demand increases as early as 2026. The modeling approach could be replicated in other regions with adjusted parameters.
