Selected Parameters of Oat Straw as an Alternative Energy Raw Material

Nitrogen doped magnetic porous carbon derived from starch of oatmeal for efficient activation peroxymonosulfate to degradation sulfadiazine

Nitrogen doped magnetic porous carbon catalyst based on starch of oatmeal was obtained by mixing and pyrolysis process, and its catalytic activity of peroxymonosulfate activation for sulfadiazine degradation was evaluated. When ratio of oatmeal/urea/iron was 1: 2: 0.1, CN@Fe-10 had the best catalytic activity to degrade sulfadiazine. Around 97.8 % removal of 20 mg L^-1 sulfadiazine was achieved under incorporating of 0.05 g L^-1 catalyst and 0.20 g L^-1 peroxymonosulfate. Good adaptability, stability and universality of CN@Fe-10 were verified under different conditions. Electron paramagnetic resonance and radical quenching test suggested that surface-bound reactive oxides species and singlet oxygen were the main reactive oxides species in this reaction. Electrochemical analysis indicated that CN@Fe-10 had a good electrical conductivity and electron transferred did occur among CN@Fe-10 surface, peroxymonosulfate and sulfadiazine. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggested that Fe⁰, Fe₃C, pyridine nitrogen and graphite nitrogen were the potential active sites for peroxymonosulfate activation. Therefore, the work provided a practical approach for recycling biomass.

Evaluation and Assessment of Trivalent and Hexavalent Chromium on Avena sativa and Soil Enzymes

Chromium (Cr) can exist in several oxidation states, but the two most stable forms-Cr(III) and Cr(VI)-have completely different biochemical characteristics. The aim of the present study was to evaluate how soil contamination with Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in the presence of Na2EDTA affects Avena sativa L. biomass; assess the remediation capacity of Avena sativa L. based on its tolerance index, translocation factor, and chromium accumulation; and investigate how these chromium species affect the soil enzyme activity and physicochemical properties of soil. This study consisted of a pot experiment divided into two groups: non-amended and amended with Na2EDTA. The Cr(III)- and Cr(VI)-contaminated soil samples were prepared in doses of 0, 5, 10, 20, and 40 mg Cr kg-1 d.m. soil. The negative effect of chromium manifested as a decreased biomass of Avena sativa L. (aboveground parts and roots). Cr(VI) proved to be more toxic than Cr(III). The tolerance indices (TI) showed that Avena sativa L. tolerates Cr(III) contamination better than Cr(VI) contamination. The translocation values for Cr(III) were much lower than for Cr(VI). Avena sativa L. proved to be of little use for the phytoextraction of chromium from soil. Dehydrogenases were the enzymes which were the most sensitive to soil contamination with Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Conversely, the catalase level was observed to be the least sensitive. Na2EDTA exacerbated the negative effects of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) on the growth and development of Avena sativa L. and soil enzyme activity.

Pyrolysis of Biomass Wastes into Carbon Materials

This study presents the results of the biomass pyrolysis process focusing on biochar production and its potential energetic (as solid fuel) and material (as adsorbent) applications. Three kinds of biomass waste were investigated: wheat straw, spent coffee grounds, and brewery grains. The pyrolysis process was carried out under nitrogen atmosphere at 400 and 500 °C (residence time of 20 min). A significant increase in the carbon content was observed in the biochars, e.g., from 45% to 73% (at 400 °C) and 77% (at 500 °C) for spent coffee grounds. In addition, the structure and morphology were investigated using scanning electron microscopy. Thermal properties were studied using a simultaneous thermal analysis under an oxidising atmosphere. The chemical activation was completed using KOH. The sorption properties of the obtained biochars were tested using chromium ion (Cr3+) adsorption from liquid solution. The specific surface area and average pore diameter of each sample were determined using the BET method. Finally, it was found that selected biochars can be applied as adsorbent or a fuel. In detail, brewery grains-activated carbon had the highest surface area, wheat straw-activated carbon adsorbed the highest amount of Cr3+, and wheat straw chars presented the best combustion properties.
