Water pollution generated by tourism: Review of system dynamics models

This study delves into the intricate dynamics of tourism-induced water pollution through a systematic literature review, aiming to unravel complexities using a system dynamics (SD) modeling approach coupled with the PRISMA analysis methodology. Employing a comprehensive PRISMA analysis of 68 pertinent articles, the study establishes a metamodel for comprehending plastic pollution in water ecosystems resulting from tourism. The methodology emphasizes economic and environmental dimensions, causal conditions, and interventions, with a specific focus on the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The results highlight integrated strategies as crucial in mitigating tourism-induced water pollution. These strategies advocate for the incorporation of environmental conservation and sustainable management practices. The study underlines the pivotal role of environmental education, awareness, and investments in protection as effective interventions. The findings offer valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders in the tourism industry, emphasizing the necessity for proactive planning and management. The study advocates for knowledge-based decision-making to optimize tourism's environmental impacts and underscores the significance of quick and flexible responses to environmental challenges.

Sustainable pathways for attaining net-zero emissions in European emerging countries - the nexus between renewable energy sources and ecological footprint

This study aims to investigate the relationship between renewable energy and ecological footprint during the period of 1994-2018 from selected developing countries in Europe (Czechia, Croatia, Poland, Romania, Romania, and Turkey). In this context, the ecological footprint (EF), which has recently been the most widely used environmental indicator in the literature and is known as the most comprehensive because it includes many environmental factors, has been determined as the dependent variable. As independent variables, renewable energy consumption (REC), energy-related tax revenue (ETR), and energy productivity (EP) are included in the model. GDP and development of environment-related technologies (DET), which affect the ecological footprint in the model, are determined as control variables. As a result of the panel data analysis, according to the Durbin-Hausman cointegration test result, a long-term relationship between the variables was determined. According to the CCE estimator analysis, it can be said that there is a positive relationship between ETR and GDP variables and EF. For the AMG estimator analysis, it can be said that there is a positive relationship between GDP and EP variables and EF. Finally, according to the results of the Konya Causality test, a unidirectional causality relationship is detected from environmental technologies to the ecological footprint in Turkey, and a unidirectional causality relationship from the ecological footprint to GDP in Czechia, Romania, and Turkey. Furthermore, no causality relationship is detected between other variables. Based on the results, several policy implications are suggested.

Studying tourism recovery options under economic constraints: does stakeholder engagement and financial stability matter?

Researchers neglected the relevance of combining tourism with stakeholders' engagement and financial stability for unlocking the economic constraints. For this, current research intended to study the interplay of tourism recovery options under economic constraints with the role of stakeholders' engagement and financial stability. According to our data, China outperforms the other OECD members. The results shown that Russia comes in second with a consistent in tourism recovery, financial stability, and stakeholders' engagement; Indonesia and Turkey, which finished fourth and fifth in the rankings, have good tourism recovery prospects. Mexico and Brazil come in second and third, respectively, with the worst performance and the lowest scores recorded in the survey findings. The overall interplay among the variables was empirically produced based on the findings of this study and is a new inclusive assessment of financial stability and tourism recovery parameters. It is a useful tool for policy development and evaluation. This study also addresses the criticism of load selection at random and accurately depicts the entire scope of fiscal intervention in the economy to prudently enhance tourism recovery at large.

Integrating the natural environment into tourism firms' business model for sustainability

The link between the business model (BM) and sustainability is recognized in tourism research and practice, especially as far as its socioeconomic consequences are concerned. Moreover, prior studies have highlighted some key factors influencing the sustainable business models (SBMs) of tourism firms but have mainly done so by adopting static perspectives. Thus, how these firms can contribute to sustainability through their BMs with positive effects, particularly on natural resources, remains overlooked. Thus, we adopt coevolutionary lenses to explore the main processes surrounding tourism firms' SBM. Coevolution conceives the firm-environment relationship as both circular, with mutual influence and reciprocal changes, and dialectical. Accordingly, we analyze 28 Italian agritourism firms during the COVID-19 pandemic emergency period focusing on the dynamics of their relationship with various multilevel actors (including institutions, local communities, tourists) by considering internal and external factors influencing their SBM. The dialectical nature of this relationship is stressed. We find three new factors: sustainable tourism culture, tourist loyalty, and local natural resource setting. Moreover, from the coevolutionary analysis of the findings, we derive a framework that conceptualizes agritourism SBMs as a virtuous coevolutionary process through effective coadaptations between multilevel actors influenced by 12 factors. Tourism entrepreneurs and policy-makers should carefully consider the factors influencing SBMs and try to act upon them to effectively organize and manage relationships of mutual functionality in light of current challenges, especially environmental concerns.

Assessing the EKC hypothesis by considering the supply chain disruption and greener energy: findings in the lens of sustainable development goals

This paper investigates the effect of the supply chain disruption, greener energy consumption, and economic growth on carbon emissions in advanced economies and emerging markets from 1997 to 2021 using panel quantile autoregressive distributed lags (QARDL) and the panel quantile regression (QR). The results of the two models confirm, on the one hand, the validity of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis and, on the other hand, the role of renewable energy consumption in mitigating carbon emissions in advanced and developing economies. Furthermore, the finding shows that the supply chain disruption for the long run is positive at all quantiles, indicating the evidence of association at the extreme low and high quantiles than at the intermediate quantile. In addition, the effect of the supply chain decreases at the lower quantile. It turns negative at the upper 90th quantile in the short run, indicating that the supply chain disruption reduces the environmental degradation under the bearish market conditions. In the future, the increasing supply chain disruptions due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and further COVID-19 worldwide can consider sluggish economic growth and play an essential role in promoting renewable energy abundance and reducing CO₂ emissions. Practical implications are reported in the lens of carbon neutrality and structural changes.
