Abstract
BACKGROUND The holistic characterization of different microbiomes in anaerobic digestion (AD) systems can contribute to a better understanding of these systems and provide starting points for bioengineering. The present study investigates the microbiome of 80 European full-scale AD systems. Operational, chemical and taxonomic data were thoroughly collected, analysed and correlated to identify the main drivers of AD processes. RESULTS The present study describes chemical and operational parameters for a broad spectrum of different AD systems. With this data, Spearman correlation and differential abundance analyses were applied to narrow down the role of the individual microorganisms detected. The authors succeeded in further limiting the number of microorganisms in the core microbiome for a broad range of AD systems. Based on 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, MBA03, Proteiniphilum, a member of the family Dethiobacteraceae, the genus Caldicoprobacter and the methanogen Methanosarcina were the most prevalent and abundant organisms identified in all digesters analysed. High ratios for Methanoculleus are often described for agricultural co-digesters. Therefore, it is remarkable that Methanosarcina was surprisingly high in several digesters reaching ratios up to 47.2%. The various statistical analyses revealed that the microorganisms grouped according to different patterns. A purely taxonomic correlation enabled a distinction between an acetoclastic cluster and a hydrogenotrophic one. However, in the multivariate analysis with chemical parameters, the main clusters corresponded to hydrolytic and acidogenic microorganisms, with SAOB bacteria being particularly important in the second group. Including operational parameters resulted in digester-type specific grouping of microbes. Those with separate acidification stood out among the many reactor types due to their unexpected behaviour. Despite maximizing the organic loading rate in the hydrolytic pretreatments, these stages turned into extremely robust methane production units. CONCLUSIONS From 80 different AD systems, one of the most holistic data sets is provided. A very distinct formation of microbial clusters was discovered, depending on whether taxonomic, chemical or operational parameters were combined. The microorganisms in the individual clusters were strongly dependent on the respective reference parameters.

Abstract
In Japan, Japanese Black cattle, known for their exceptional meat quality owing to their abundant intramuscular fat, undergo a unique three-stage feeding system with varying concentrate ratios. There is limited research on physiological and rumen microbial changes in Japanese Black cattle during these stages. Therefore, this study aimed to examine Japanese Black steers in these three stages: early (T1, 12-14 months), middle (T2, 15-22 months), and late (T3, 23-30 months). The rumen bacteria of 21 cattle per phase was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Rumen bacterial diversity was significantly higher in T1, with a distinct distribution, than in T2 and T3. Specific phyla and genera were exclusive to each stage, reflecting the shifts in feed composition. Certain genera dominated each stage: T1 had Flexilinea, Streptococcus, Butyrivibrio, Selenomonas, and Kandleria; T2 had Bifidobacterium, Shuttleworthia, and Sharpea; and T3 had Acetitomaculum, Mycoplasma, Atopobium, and Howardella. Correlation analysis revealed significant associations between certain microbial populations and physiological parameters. These findings indicate that changes in energy content and feed composition are associated with physiological and ruminal alterations. This study may guide strategies to improve rumen health and productivity in Japanese Black cattle by modifying diets to specific fattening stages.

Abstract
Increased attention has been given to whole grain and plant-based foods due to health concerns. Sweet fermented oats (SFOs) are such traditional fermented food from China. However, reports on their microbiota and relations with the nutrients and flavor were scarcely few, hindering their wider application. The comprehensive microbial composition, metabolic compounds and their correlations of representative SFOs from northwestern China were firstly investigated. Firmicutes predominated the microbial communities, followed by Proteobacteria. Weissella, Bacillus and Lactobacillus were dominant bacterial genera, biomarkers and core bacteria as well. GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer) identified the metabolic compounds, among which the categories fatty acids and carboxylic acids most abundant. Eighteen chemicals showed significant differences among the five SFOs, including ethyl octanoate, neryl acetate, L-sorbose, diglycerol, cellotetraose etc. Fatty acids, carboxylic acids, amino acids, peptides, oligosaccharides, and monosaccharides were the key substances responsible for the unique flavor and rich nutrients in SFOs. The core bacteria were closely related to chemical acids, esters, flavone and alcohol. Pediococcus showed a negative correlation with 2,3-butanediol. SFOs were made in the laboratory with the core bacterial strains, obtaining a high abundance of nutrient chemicals and sensory evaluation value. The research provided a foundation for the improvement, further application and industrialization of SFOs.

Abstract
Sludge stabilization was affected by solid content during autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD). Thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) could alleviate the issues of high viscosity, slow solubilization and low ATAD efficiency caused by increased solid content. The influence of THP on the stabilization of sludge with different solid contents (5.24%-17.14%) during ATAD was investigated in this study. The results demonstrated that stabilization was achieved with volatile solid (VS) removal of 39.0%-40.4% after 7-9 days of ATAD for sludge with solid content of 5.24%-17.14%. The solubilization of sludge with different solid contents reached 40.1%-45.0% after THP. The rheological analysis indicated that the apparent viscosity of sludge was obviously reduced after THP at different solid contents. The increase in fluorescence intensity of fulvic acid-like organics, soluble microbial by-products and humic acid-like organics in the supernatant after THP and the decrease in fluorescence intensity of soluble microbial by-products after ATAD were detected by excitation emission matrix (EEM). The molecular weight (MW) distribution in the supernatant elucidated that the proportion of 50 kDa < MW < 100 kDa increased to 16%-34% after THP and the proportion of 10 kDa < MW < 50 kDa decreased to 8%-24% after ATAD. High throughput sequencing showed that the dominant bacterial genera shifted from Acinetobacter, Defluviicoccus and Norank_f__norank_o__PeM15 to Sphaerobacter and Bacillus during ATAD. This work revealed that solid content of 13%-17% was appropriate for efficient ATAD and rapid stabilization under THP.

Abstract
The growing population and healthy food demands have led to a rise in food waste generation, causing severe environmental and economic impacts. However, food waste (FW) can be converted into sustainable animal feed, reducing waste disposal and providing an alternative protein source for animals. The utilization of FW as animal feed presents a solution that not only tackles challenges pertaining to FW management and food security but also lessens the demand for the development of traditional feed, which is an endeavour that is both resource and environmentally intensive in nature. Moreover, this approach can also contribute to the circular economy by creating a closed-loop system that reduces the use of natural resources and minimizes environmental pollution. Therefore, this review discusses the characteristics and types of FW, as well as advanced treatment methods that can be used to recycle FW into high-quality animal feed and its limitations, as well as the benefits and drawbacks of using FW as animal feed. Finally, the review concludes that utilization of FW as animal feed can provide a sustainable solution for FW management, food security, preserving resources, reducing environmental impacts, and contributing to the circular bioeconomy.

Abstract
Biogas production involves various types of intricate microbial populations in an anaerobic digester (AD). To understand the anaerobic digestion system better, a broad-based study must be conducted on the microbial population. Deep understanding of the complete metagenomics including microbial structure, functional gene form, similarity/differences, and relationships between metabolic pathways and product formation, could aid in optimization and enhancement of AD processes. With advancements in technologies for metagenomic sequencing, for example, next generation sequencing and high-throughput sequencing, have revolutionized the study of microbial dynamics in anaerobic digestion. This review includes a brief introduction to the basic process of metagenomics research and includes a detailed summary of the various bioinformatics approaches, viz., total investigation of data obtained from microbial communities using bioinformatics methods to expose metagenomics characterization. This includes (1) methods of DNA isolation and sequencing, (2) investigation of anaerobic microbial communities using bioinformatics techniques, (3) application of the analysis of anaerobic microbial community and biogas production, and (4) restriction and prediction of bioinformatics analysis on microbial metagenomics. The review has been concluded, giving a summarized insight into bioinformatic tools and also promoting the future prospects of integrating humungous data with artificial intelligence and neural network software.

Abstract
Municipal wastewater treatment plants are good examples of facilities where the concept of a circular economy model can be effectively implemented by the recovery of energy as well as secondary and natural materials. That is why anaerobic co-digestion has become one of the most appealing renewable energy pathways and takes a key position within sludge-handling processes. This research looked into the feasibility of the utilization of water sludge from a water treatment plant in anaerobic co-digestion with sewage sludge. The experiments confirmed that anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge together with water sludge significantly improved fermentation gas (biogas) production. The best results were observed when water treatment sludge constituted 30% of the mass of sewage sludge (as volatile solids, VS). At this ratio, approximately 20% more biogas was produced in laboratory experiments compared to the biogas production from sewage sludge only. The results, once confirmed on a semi-technical scale, will help to develop a sequence of processes which would enhance biogas production. Both the technology and the final product offer a comprehensive solution for waste generated at water and wastewater treatment plants. The innovative approach allows for the use of various waste streams and their combined processing following the principle of the circular economy.
