Assessment of the Variability of Biogas Production from Sugar Beet Silage as Affected by Movement and Loss of the Produced Alcohols and Organic Acids

A comprehensive review on anaerobic fungi applications in biofuels production

Anaerobic fungi (Neocallimastigomycota) are promising lignocellulose-degrading microorganisms that can be exploited by the biofuel industry. While natural production of ethanol by these microorganisms is very low, there is a greater potential for their use in the biogas industry. More specifically, anaerobic fungi can contribute to biogas production by either releasing holocellulose or reducing sugars from lignocelluloses that can be used as a substrate by bacteria and methanogens involved in the anaerobic digestion (AD) process or by metabolizing acetate and formate that can be directly consumed by methanogens. Despite their great potential, the appropriate tools for engineering anaerobic fungi have not been established yet. The first section of this review justifies how the biofuel industry can benefit from using anaerobic fungi and is followed by their taxonomy. In the third section, the possibility of using anaerobic fungi for the consolidated production of bioethanol is briefly discussed. Nevertheless, the main focus of this review is on the upstream and mainstream effects of bioaugmentation with anaerobic fungi on the AD process. The present review also scrutinizes the constraints on the way of efficient engineering of anaerobic rumen fungi. By providing this knowledge, this review aims to help research in this field with identifying the challenges that must be addressed by future experiments to achieve the full potentials of these promising microorganisms. To sum up, the pretreatment of lignocelluloses by anaerobic fungi can prevent carbohydrate loss due to respiration (compared to white-rot fungi). Following fungal mixed acid fermentation, the obtained slurry containing sugars and more susceptible holocellulose can be directly consumed by AD microorganisms (bacteria, methanogens). The bioaugmentation of anaerobic fungi into the AD process can increase methane biosynthesis by >3.3 times. Despite this, for the commercial AD process, novel genetic engineering techniques and kits must be developed to efficiently improve anaerobic fungi viability throughout the AD process.

Estimating the Methane Potential of Energy Crops: An Overview on Types of Data Sources and Their Limitations

As the anaerobic digestion of energy crops and crop residues becomes more widely applied for bioenergy production, planners and operators of biogas plants, and farmers who consider growing such crops, have a need for information on potential biogas and methane yields. A rich body of literature reports methane yields for a variety of such materials. These data have been obtained with different testing methods. This work elaborates an overview on the types of data source available and the methods that are commonly applied to determine the methane yield of an agricultural biomass, with a focus on European crops. Limitations regarding the transferability and generalisation of data are explored, and crop methane values presented across the literature are compared. Large variations were found for reported values, which can only partially be explained by the methods applied. Most notably, the intra-crop variation of methane yield (reported values for a single crop type) was higher than the inter-crop variation (variation between different crops). The pronounced differences in reported methane yields indicate that relying on results from individual assays of candidate materials is a high-risk approach for planning biogas operations, and the ranges of values such as those presented here are essential to provide a robust basis for estimation.

Agricultural Residue Management for Sustainable Power Generation: The Poland Case Study

The European Union has set targets for renewable energy utilization. Poland is a member of the EU, and its authorities support an increase in renewable energy use. The background of this study is based on the role of renewable energy sources in improving energy security and mitigation of climate change. Agricultural waste is of a significant role in bioenergy. However, there is a lack of integrated methodology for the measurement of its potential. The possibility of developing an integrated evaluation methodology for renewable energy potential and its spatial distribution was assumed as the hypothesis. The novelty of this study is the integration of two renewable energy sources: crop residues and animal husbandry waste (for biogas). To determine agricultural waste energy potential, we took into account straw requirements for stock-raising and soil conservation. The total energy potential of agricultural waste was estimated at 279.94 PJ. It can cover up to 15% of national power generation. The spatial distribution of the agricultural residue energy potential was examined. This information can be used to predict appropriate locations for biomass-based power generation facilities. The potential reduction in carbon dioxide emissions ranges from 25.7 to 33.5 Mt per year.

The Influence of the Process of Sugar Beet Storage on Its Biochemical Methane Potential

The manner of storage of sugar beets largely influences their physical and chemical properties, which may subsequently determine their biochemical methane potential. In this study, samples of fresh sugar beets as well as beets stored in two ways—in airtight conditions and in an open-air container—were tested. In both cases, measurements were taken on specific dates, i.e., after 4, 8, 16 and 32 weeks of storage. A decrease in pH was observed in all samples, with the lowest decrease occurring in hermetically stored samples. The lowest pH value of 3.71 was obtained for sugar beets stored in an open-air container after 32 weeks of storage. During storage, a gradual decrease in total solids was also recorded along with accompanying losses of organic matter, more significant in the case of storage in an open-air container. In subsequent storage periods, the biogas/methane production efficiency differed slightly for both methods. The highest volume of biogas was obtained for fresh sugar beets—148.23 mL·g−1 fresh matter (FM)—and subsequently in the 8th and 16th weeks of storage: 139.35 mL·g−1 FM (H—airtight conditions) and 144.14 mL·g−1 FM (O—open-air container), and 147.58 H mL·g−1 FM (H) and 148.22 mL·g−1 FM (O), respectively. The storage period affected the time of anaerobic decomposition of the organic matter—fresh sugar beets took the longest to ferment (26 days), while the material stored for 32 weeks took the shortest to ferment. In the experiment, the content of selected organic compounds in individual samples, i.e., sugar, methanol, ethanol, lactic acid and acetic acid, was also analysed. Within these results, significant differences were found between the samples stored using the two different methods. A high content of sugar, methanol, ethanol and other chemical compounds in the “O” materials showed the hydrolysis and acidogenesis processes taking place in an open-air container, with the participation of catalytic microorganisms.

Co-Ensiling of Wheat Straw as an Alternative Pre-Treatment to Chemical, Hydrothermal and Mechanical Methods for Methane Production

Wheat straw without pre-treatment is only converted to methane to a low degree during anaerobic digestion for fuel production due to its low hydrolysis. Current pre-treatment technologies are challenged by high expenses to energy or chemical agents. We examined the low-tech co-ensiling pre-treatment as an alternative pre-treatment of wheat straw, and compared the results with hydrothermal, chemical and mechanical pre-treatment methods. The effects of co-ensiling duration and the mixing ratio between straw and sugar beet root on the methane yields, surface morphology and chemical composition were examined. It was found that co-ensiling could improve production of methane by 34.7%, while a combined hydrothermal and chemical pre-treatment could increase the production of methane by 25.4%. The study demonstrated that the effect of co-ensiling could overlap with hydrothermal and chemical pre-treatment by having similar effects to increase lignocellulosic hydrolysis and improve methane production.

Biological Pretreatment Strategies for Second-Generation Lignocellulosic Resources to Enhance Biogas Production

With regard to social and environmental sustainability, second-generation biofuel and biogas production from lignocellulosic material provides considerable potential, since lignocellulose represents an inexhaustible, ubiquitous natural resource, and is therefore one important step towards independence from fossil fuel combustion. However, the highly heterogeneous structure and recalcitrant nature of lignocellulose restricts its commercial utilization in biogas plants. Improvements therefore rely on effective pretreatment methods to overcome structural impediments, thus facilitating the accessibility and digestibility of (ligno)cellulosic substrates during anaerobic digestion. While chemical and physical pretreatment strategies exhibit inherent drawbacks including the formation of inhibitory products, biological pretreatment is increasingly being advocated as an environmentally friendly process with low energy input, low disposal costs, and milder operating conditions. Nevertheless, the promising potential of biological pretreatment techniques is not yet fully exploited. Hence, we intended to provide a detailed insight into currently applied pretreatment techniques, with a special focus on biological ones for downstream processing of lignocellulosic biomass in anaerobic digestion.
