A Review of Classification Problems and Algorithms in Renewable Energy Applications

IoT and Deep Learning-Based Farmer Safety System

Farming is a fundamental factor driving economic development in most regions of the world. As in agricultural activity, labor has always been hazardous and can result in injury or even death. This perception encourages farmers to use proper tools, receive training, and work in a safe environment. With the wearable device as an Internet of Things (IoT) subsystem, the device can read sensor data as well as compute and send information. We investigated the validation and simulation dataset to determine whether accidents occurred with farmers by applying the Hierarchical Temporal Memory (HTM) classifier with each dataset input from the quaternion feature that represents 3D rotation. The performance metrics analysis showed a significant 88.00% accuracy, precision of 0.99, recall of 0.04, F_Score of 0.09, average Mean Square Error (MSE) of 5.10, Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.19, and a Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 1.51 for the validation dataset, 54.00% accuracy, precision of 0.97, recall of 0.50, F_Score of 0.66, MSE = 0.06, MAE = 3.24, and = 1.51 for the Farming-Pack motion capture (mocap) dataset. The computational framework with wearable device technology connected to ubiquitous systems, as well as statistical results, demonstrate that our proposed method is feasible and effective in solving the problem's constraints in a time series dataset that is acceptable and usable in a real rural farming environment for optimal solutions.

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Mental Health and Socioeconomic Aspects in Greece

The global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has spread worldwide, affecting almost all countries and territories. COVID-19 continues to impact various spheres of our life, such as the economy, industries, global market, agriculture, human health, health care, and many others. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the COVID-lockdowns on people's mental health in Greece. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in several urban, semi-urban and rural areas. The survey of 252 Greek people was conducted in spring 2022, and 46.8% of them were female and the other 53.2% were male. Ages were between 19 and 60 years old. Some of the main findings were that most of the participants feel their mental health got worse than before (about 80%), participants with kids were more affected than those who did not have any kids because they had bigger responsibilities and the pandemic might have caused them a lot of problems to deal with. The higher the income, the less they are affected, and people whose jobs did not change dramatically were also less likely to not be much mentally affected. Moreover, the percentage of smokers whose mental health became worse was greater than that among those who did not smoke. The same happened with those who consumed alcohol. Finally, we used the GBM algorithm to find three important predictors and we applied k-means to have a clear picture of the different clusters and how a number of participants are connected according to their answers.

An overview of deterministic and probabilistic forecasting methods of wind energy

In recent years, a variety of wind forecasting models have been developed, prompting necessity to review the abundant methods to gain insights of the state-of-the-art development status. However, existing literature reviews only focus on a subclass of methods, such as multi-objective optimization and machine learning methods while lacking the full particulars of wind forecasting field. Furthermore, the classification of wind forecasting methods is unclear and incomplete, especially considering the rapid development of this field. Therefore, this article aims to provide a systematic review of the existing deterministic and probabilistic wind forecasting methods, from the perspectives of data source, model evaluation framework, technical background, theoretical basis, and model performance. It is expected that this work will provide junior researchers with broad and detailed information on wind forecasting for their future development of more accurate and practical wind forecasting models.

Cardiovascular Disease Detection using Ensemble Learning

One of the most challenging tasks for clinicians is detecting symptoms of cardiovascular disease as earlier as possible. Many individuals worldwide die each year from cardiovascular disease. Since heart disease is a major concern, it must be dealt with timely. Multiple variables affecting health, such as excessive blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, an irregular pulse rate, and many more, make it challenging to diagnose cardiac disease. Thus, artificial intelligence can be useful in identifying and treating diseases early on. This paper proposes an ensemble-based approach that uses machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models to predict a person’s likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease. We employ six classification algorithms to predict cardiovascular disease. Models are trained using a publicly available dataset of cardiovascular disease cases. We use random forest (RF) to extract important cardiovascular disease features. The experiment results demonstrate that the ML ensemble model achieves the best disease prediction accuracy of 88.70%.

Fault Detection and Classification in Transmission Lines Connected to Inverter-Based Generators Using Machine Learning

Integrating inverter-based generators in power systems introduces several challenges to conventional protection relays. The fault characteristics of these generators depend on the inverters’ control strategy, which matters in the detection and classification of the fault. This paper presents a comprehensive machine-learning-based approach for detecting and classifying faults in transmission lines connected to inverter-based generators. A two-layer classification approach was considered: fault detection and fault type classification. The faults were comprised of different types at several line locations and variable fault impedance. The features from instantaneous three-phase current and voltages and calculated swing-center voltage (SCV) were extracted in time, frequency, and time–frequency domains. A photovoltaic (PV) and a Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) wind farm plant were the considered renewable resources. The unbalanced data problem was investigated and mitigated using the synthetic minority class oversampling technique (SMOTE). The hyperparameters of the evaluated classifiers, namely decision trees (DT), Support Vector Machines (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN), and Ensemble trees, were optimized using the Bayesian optimization algorithm. The extracted features were reduced using several methods. The classification performance was evaluated in terms of the accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, and precision metrics. The results show that the data balancing improved the specificity of DT, SVM, and k-NN classifiers (DT: from 99.86% for unbalanced data to 100% for balanced data; SVM: from 99.28% for unbalanced data to 99.93% for balanced data; k-NN: from 99.64% for unbalanced data to 99.74% for balanced data). The forward feature selection combined with the Bag ensemble classifier achieved 100% accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and precision for fault detection (binary classification), while the Adaboost ensemble classifier had the highest accuracy (99.4%), compared to the other classifiers when using the complete set of features. The classification models with the highest performance were further tested using a new dataset test case. They showed high detection and classification capabilities. The proposed approach was compared with the previous methodologies from the literature.

Microstructural Classification and Reconstruction of the Computational Geometry of Steamed Bread Using Descriptor-Based Approach

Abstract

Microstructures affect the properties of food products; accurate and relatively less complex microstructural representations are thus needed for modelling of transport phenomena during food processing. Hence, the present study aimed at developing computational microstructures of steamed bread using descriptor-based approach. Relevant information was extracted from the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the steamed bread and evaluated using seven classifiers. For the automatic classification and using all descriptors, bagged trees ensembles (BTE) had the highest accuracy of 98.40%, while Gaussian Naïve Bayes was the least with 92.10% accuracy. In the “step forward” analysis, five descriptors had higher classification accuracy (98.80%) than all descriptors, implying that increase in descriptors might or might not increase classification accuracy. Microstructural validation revealed that the ellipse fitting method with a p value of 0.7984 for the area was found to be superior to the Voronoi method with a corresponding p value of 1.4554 × 10−5, confirming that the ellipse developed microstructure was more suitable for microscale modelling of transport phenomena in steamed bread.

Lessons for Data-Driven Modelling from Harmonics in the Norwegian Grid

With the advancing integration of fluctuating renewables, a more dynamic demand-side, and a grid running closer to its operational limits, future power system operators require new tools to anticipate unwanted events. Advances in machine learning and availability of data suggest great potential in using data-driven approaches, but these will only ever be as good as the data they are based on. To lay the ground-work for future data-driven modelling, we establish a baseline state by analysing the statistical distribution of voltage measurements from three sites in the Norwegian power grid (22, 66, and 300 kV). Measurements span four years, are line and phase voltages, are cycle-by-cycle, and include all (even and odd) harmonics up to the 96 order. They are based on four years of historical data from three Elspec Power Quality Analyzers (corresponding to one trillion samples), which we have extracted, processed, and analyzed. We find that: (i) the distribution of harmonics depends on phase and voltage level; (ii) there is little power beyond the 13 harmonic; (iii) there is temporal clumping of extreme values; and (iv) there is seasonality on different time-scales. For machine learning based modelling these findings suggest that: (i) models should be trained in two steps (first with data from all sites, then adapted to site-level); (ii) including harmonics beyond the 13 is unlikely to increase model performance, and that modelling should include features that (iii) encode the state of the grid, as well as (iv) seasonality.

Review on Deep Learning Research and Applications in Wind and Wave Energy

Wind energy and wave energy are considered to have enormous potential as renewable energy sources in the energy system to make great contributions in transitioning from fossil fuel to renewable energy. However, the uncertain, erratic, and complicated scenarios, as well as the tremendous amount of information and corresponding parameters, associated with wind and wave energy harvesting are difficult to handle. In the field of big data handing and mining, artificial intelligence plays a critical and efficient role in energy system transition, harvesting and related applications. The derivative method of deep learning and its surrounding prolongation structures are expanding more maturely in many fields of applications in the last decade. Even though both wind and wave energy have the characteristics of instability, more and more applications have implemented using these two renewable energy sources with the support of deep learning methods. This paper systematically reviews and summarizes the different models, methods and applications where the deep learning method has been applied in wind and wave energy. The accuracy and effectiveness of different methods on a similar application were compared. This paper concludes that applications supported by deep learning have enormous potential in terms of energy optimization, harvesting, management, forecasting, behavior exploration and identification.

A Survey on Computational Intelligence Applications in Distribution Network Optimization

This paper aims to present carefully selected scientific papers that have pushed the boundaries in the application of advanced computational intelligence–based methods in power engineering, mainly in optimal power system management. Contemporary development of the Smart Grid and detailed framework for power grid digitalization enabled the real and efficient application of advanced optimization algorithms presented in this paper. Papers that are not directly related to Smart Grid management are also considered, since they solve the partial challenges of planning and development with metaheuristic procedures, and according to the authors, they are highly applicable and represent a fundamental starting point for wider application. This paper covers papers and research whose results are reproducible and can be realized in production-grade software. The emphasis of the paper is on the considerate and impartial way of providing a concise overview of the methods for solving technical challenges within the accepted Smart Grid architecture. The paper is the result of many years of research and commitment to this field and represents the foundation for present research and development.

Data Augmentation and Feature Selection for Automatic Model Recommendation in Computational Physics

Classification algorithms have recently found applications in computational physics for the selection of numerical methods or models adapted to the environment and the state of the physical system. For such classification tasks, labeled training data come from numerical simulations and generally correspond to physical fields discretized on a mesh. Three challenging difficulties arise: the lack of training data, their high dimensionality, and the non-applicability of common data augmentation techniques to physics data. This article introduces two algorithms to address these issues: one for dimensionality reduction via feature selection, and one for data augmentation. These algorithms are combined with a wide variety of classifiers for their evaluation. When combined with a stacking ensemble made of six multilayer perceptrons and a ridge logistic regression, they enable reaching an accuracy of 90% on our classification problem for nonlinear structural mechanics.

Optimization Techniques for Mining Power Quality Data and Processing Unbalanced Datasets in Machine Learning Applications

In recent years, machine learning applications have received increasing interest from power system researchers. The successful performance of these applications is dependent on the availability of extensive and diverse datasets for the training and validation of machine learning frameworks. However, power systems operate at quasi-steady-state conditions for most of the time, and the measurements corresponding to these states provide limited novel knowledge for the development of machine learning applications. In this paper, a data mining approach based on optimization techniques is proposed for filtering root-mean-square (RMS) voltage profiles and identifying unusual measurements within triggerless power quality datasets. Then, datasets with equal representation between event and non-event observations are created so that machine learning algorithms can extract useful insights from the rare but important event observations. The proposed framework is demonstrated and validated with both synthetic signals and field data measurements.

Machine Learning-Based Approach to Predict Energy Consumption of Renewable and Nonrenewable Power Sources

In today’s world, renewable energy sources are increasingly integrated with nonrenewable energy sources into electric grids and pose new challenges because of their intermittent and variable nature. Energy prediction using soft-computing techniques plays a vital role in addressing these challenges. As electricity consumption is closely linked to other energy sources such as natural gas and oil, forecasting electricity consumption is essential for making national energy policies. In this paper, we utilize various data mining techniques, including preprocessing historical load data and the load time series’s characteristics. We analyzed the power consumption trends from renewable energy sources and nonrenewable energy sources and combined them. A novel machine learning-based hybrid approach, combining multilayer perceptron (MLP), support vector regression (SVR), and CatBoost, is proposed in this paper for power forecasting. A thorough comparison is made, taking into account the results obtained using other prediction methods.

A Survey of Machine Learning Models in Renewable Energy Predictions

The use of renewable energy to reduce the effects of climate change and global warming has become an increasing trend. In order to improve the prediction ability of renewable energy, various prediction techniques have been developed. The aims of this review are illustrated as follows. First, this survey attempts to provide a review and analysis of machine-learning models in renewable-energy predictions. Secondly, this study depicts procedures, including data pre-processing techniques, parameter selection algorithms, and prediction performance measurements, used in machine-learning models for renewable-energy predictions. Thirdly, the analysis of sources of renewable energy, values of the mean absolute percentage error, and values of the coefficient of determination were conducted. Finally, some possible potential opportunities for future work were provided at end of this survey.

Persistence Analysis and Prediction of Low-Visibility Events at Valladolid Airport, Spain

This work presents an analysis of low-visibility event persistence and prediction at Villanubla Airport (Valladolid, Spain), considering Runway Visual Range (RVR) time series in winter. The analysis covers long- and short-term persistence and prediction of the series, with different approaches. In the case of long-term analysis, a Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) approach is applied in order to estimate large-scale RVR time series similarities. The short-term persistence analysis of low-visibility events is evaluated by means of a Markov chain analysis of the binary time series associated with low-visibility events. We finally discuss an hourly short-term prediction of low-visibility events, using different approaches, some of them coming from the persistence analysis through Markov chain models, and others based on Machine Learning (ML) techniques. We show that a Mixture of Experts approach involving persistence-based methods and Machine Learning techniques provides the best results in this prediction problem.

Classifying the Level of Energy-Environmental Efficiency Rating of Brazilian Ethanol

The present study aimed to assess and classify energy-environmental efficiency levels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the production, commercialization, and use of biofuels certified by the Brazilian National Biofuel Policy (RenovaBio). The parameters of the level of energy-environmental efficiency were standardized and categorized according to the Energy-Environmental Efficiency Rating (E-EER). The rating scale varied between lower efficiency (D) and high efficiency + (highest efficiency A+). The classification method with the J48 decision tree and naive Bayes algorithms was used to predict the models. The classification of the E-EER scores using a decision tree using the J48 algorithm and Bayesian classifiers using the naive Bayes algorithm produced decision tree models efficient at estimating the efficiency level of Brazilian ethanol producers and importers certified by the RenovaBio. The rules generated by the models can assess the level classes (efficiency scores) according to the scale discretized into high efficiency (Classification A), average efficiency (Classification B), and standard efficiency (Classification C). These results might generate an ethanol energy-environmental efficiency label for the end consumers and resellers of the product, to assist in making a purchase decision concerning its performance. The best classification model was naive Bayes, compared to the J48 decision tree. The classification of the Energy Efficiency Note levels using the naive Bayes algorithm produced a model capable of estimating the efficiency level of Brazilian ethanol to create labels.

Clustering-Based Self-Imputation of Unlabeled Fault Data in a Fleet of Photovoltaic Generation Systems

This work proposes a fault detection and imputation scheme for a fleet of small-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems, where the captured data includes unlabeled faults. On-site meteorological information, such as solar irradiance, is helpful for monitoring PV systems. However, collecting this type of weather data at every station is not feasible for a fleet owing to the limitation of installation costs. In this study, to monitor a PV fleet efficiently, neighboring PV generation profiles were utilized for fault detection and imputation, as well as solar irradiance. For fault detection from unlabeled raw PV data, K-means clustering was employed to detect abnormal patterns based on customized input features, which were extracted from the fleet PVs and weather data. When a profile was determined to have an abnormal pattern, imputation for the corresponding data was implemented using the subset of neighboring PV data clustered as normal. For evaluation, the effectiveness of neighboring PV information was investigated using the actual rooftop PV power generation data measured at several locations in the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) campus. The results indicate that neighboring PV profiles improve the fault detection capability and the imputation accuracy. For fault detection, clustering-based schemes provided error rates of 0.0126 and 0.0223, respectively, with and without neighboring PV data, whereas the conventional prediction-based approach showed an error rate of 0.0753. For imputation, estimation accuracy was significantly improved by leveraging the labels of fault detection in the proposed scheme, as much as 18.32% reduction in normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) compared with the conventional scheme without fault consideration.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Applications in Smart Production: Progress, Trends, and Directions

Adaptation and innovation are extremely important to the manufacturing industry. This development should lead to sustainable manufacturing using new technologies. To promote sustainability, smart production requires global perspectives of smart production application technology. In this regard, thanks to intensive research efforts in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), a number of AI-based techniques, such as machine learning, have already been established in the industry to achieve sustainable manufacturing. Thus, the aim of the present research was to analyze, systematically, the scientific literature relating to the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) in industry. In fact, with the introduction of the Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence and machine learning are considered the driving force of smart factory revolution. The purpose of this review was to classify the literature, including publication year, authors, scientific sector, country, institution, and keywords. The analysis was done using the Web of Science and SCOPUS database. Furthermore, UCINET and NVivo 12 software were used to complete them. A literature review on ML and AI empirical studies published in the last century was carried out to highlight the evolution of the topic before and after Industry 4.0 introduction, from 1999 to now. Eighty-two articles were reviewed and classified. A first interesting result is the greater number of works published by the USA and the increasing interest after the birth of Industry 4.0.

Hybrid Approach for Detecting and Classifying Power Quality Disturbances Based on the Variational Mode Decomposition and Deep Stochastic Configuration Network

This paper proposes a novel, two-stage and hybrid approach based on variational mode decomposition (VMD) and the deep stochastic configuration network (DSCN) for power quality (PQ) disturbances detection and classification in power systems. Firstly, a VMD technique is applied to discriminate between stationary and non-stationary PQ events. Secondly, the key parameters of VMD are determined as per different types of disturbance. Three statistical features (mean, variance, and kurtosis) are extracted from the instantaneous amplitude (IA) of the decomposed modes. The DSCN model is then developed to classify PQ disturbances based on these features. The proposed approach is validated by analytical results and actual measurements. Moreover, it is also compared with existing methods including wavelet network, fuzzy and S-transform (ST), adaptive linear neuron (ADALINE) and feedforward neural network (FFNN). Test results have proved that the proposed method is capable of providing necessary and accurate information for PQ disturbances in order to plan PQ remedy actions accordingly.
