Overview of Green Building Material (GBM) Policies and Guidelines with Relevance to Indoor Air Quality Management in Taiwan

Investigating the Emission of Hazardous Chemical Substances from Mashrabiya Used for Indoor Air Quality in Hot Desert Climate

Dubai has the reputation of a continuously growing city, with skyscrapers and mega residential projects. Many new residential projects with poor choices of material and ventilation have led to a faster rise in sick building syndrome (SBS) in Dubai than in any other country, and the IAQ (indoor air quality) has become more critical. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and formaldehyde (HCHO) affect the health of residents, producing the phenomenon known as SBS (sick building syndrome). It has been reported that wood materials used for furniture and wooden windows and doors are a significant source of indoor air pollution in new houses. This paper aims to identify the factor elements emitting harmful chemical substances, such as VOCs and HCHO, from wooden mashrabiya (traditional Arabic window) by examining the characteristics of the raw and surface materials through test pieces. As a methodology, a small chamber system was used to test the amount of hazardous chemicals generated for each test piece. For Total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) and HCHO, the blank concentration before the injection and the generation after seven days were measured. The results showed that to reduce TVOC, it is necessary to secure six months or more as a retention period for raw materials and surface materials. The longer the retention period, the smaller the TVOC emission amount. In the case of mashrabiya, an HCHO low-emitting adhesive and maintenance for one month or more are essential influencing factors. It was proven that using raw materials with a three-month or more retention period and surface materials with a one-month or more retention period is safe for indoor mashrabiya. This study is the first study in the Middle East to identify factors and characteristics that affect the emission of hazardous chemicals from wood composite materials, such as wood mashrabiya, that affect indoor air quality in residential projects in Dubai. It analyzes the correlation between emission levels and the retention period of raw and surface materials, in order to provide a new standard for indoor air pollutants.

Improving the Indoor Air Quality in Nursery Buildings in United Arab Emirates

Children inhale indoor air at 400 mL/min∙kg per body weight, 2.76 times more than adults. They have weaker immunity than adults and are more exposed to asthma, allergies, and atopic diseases. The objective of this paper is to suggest effective management and improvement measures for indoor air quality for nurseries. As a methodology, 16 nurseries (total of 35 classrooms) were selected to measure the indoor air quality compared with WHO IAQ Standard, and identify the daily concentration change of the pollutants. Based on the measurements, IAQ improvements for selected facilities are carried out to compare the results before and after improvement. The result has shown that the concentration of Carbon Dioxide (CO₂), Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC), Total Suspended Particles (TSP) and formaldehyde (CH₂O) exceeds WHO IAQ standards. The concentration of CO₂ and TSP is changed mainly by physical activity of children and that of CH₂O and TVOC is changed mainly by ventilation after school start. TVOC decreased by 46.4% and the TSP decreased by 21.7% after air purifier, but CH₂O and TVOC increased 1.8–3.8 times after interior renovation with low-emission finishing materials. After new ventilation installation, the CH₂O and TVOC reduced half and the TSP reduced one third. It is proven that the most effective way to reduce the concentration of air pollutants in nurseries is the installation of a new ventilation system, followed by an air purifier. The renovation with low-emission finishing materials cannot improve IAQ in a short period of time.

Sensors for indoor air quality monitoring and assessment through Internet of Things: a systematic review

The growing populations around the world are closely associated with rising levels of air pollution. The impact is not restricted to outdoor areas. Moreover, the health of building occupants is also deteriorating due to poor indoor air quality. As per the World Health Organization, indoor air pollution is a leading cause of 1.6 million premature deaths annually. Therefore, numerous companies have started the development of low-cost sensors to monitor indoor air pollution with the Internet of Things-based applications. However, due to the close association of air pollution levels to the mortality and morbidity rates, communities face several limitations while selecting sensors to address this public health challenge. The main contribution of this systematic review is to present a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of low-cost sensors while providing deep insights into the selection criteria for adequate monitoring. The authors in this paper discussed studies published after the year 2015, and it includes an analysis of papers published in the English language only. Moreover, this study highlights crucial research questions, states answers, and provides recommendations for future research studies. The outcomes of this paper will be useful for students, researchers, and industry members concerning the upcoming research and manufacturing activities. The results show that 28 studies (70%) include indoor thermal comfort assessment, 26 (65%) and 12 (30%) studies include CO₂ and CO sensors, respectively. In total, 32 (45.7%) out of 71 sensors (whose prices are available) discussed in this study are available in a price below the US $20 over online marketplaces. Furthermore, the authors conclude that 77.5% of the analyzed literature does not include calibration details, and the accuracy specification is missing for 39.4% sensors.

Particulate Matter Monitoring and Assessment through Internet of Things: a Health Information System for Enhanced Living Environments

People spend most of their time inside buildings. Therefore, indoor air quality monitoring contributes to improve health and well-being. Several studies focus on the critical impact of particulate matter on residential air quality. In 2016, particulate matter caused 412 thousand premature deaths in 41 European countries. This paper presents the development of an affordable health information system for enhanced living environments. The authors propose a cost-effective, modular, scalable, and easy installation solution for particulate matter monitoring. The system is connected to ThingSpeak. It can be installed in any type of building. It requires only a power source and a Wi-Fi network with internet access. The main contribution of this paper is to present the detailed architecture and testing results. The particulate matter monitoring system was installed for one week in a domestic kitchen with an open fireplace. The results showed impact of the biomass burning on indoor air quality. The mean values per day ranged from: 10.53 to 50.62 μg/m³ for PM_1.0, 15.35 to 69.37 μg/m³ for PM_2.5, and 20.1 to 90.69 μg/m³ for PM₁₀. The maximum values per hour were registered at 13:00: 72.14 μg/m³ for PM_1.0, 99.70 μg/m³ for PM_2.5, and 132.13 μg/m³ for PM₁₀. Cost-effective sensors do not have the accuracy level of industrial equipment. Therefore, they should not be used for numerical and in-depth accurate characterization of the environment. Nevertheless, continuous particulate matter monitoring provides consistent data series for analysis of indoor air quality evolution.

Indoor Air Quality Monitoring Systems for Enhanced Living Environments: A Review toward Sustainable Smart Cities

Smart cities follow different strategies to face public health challenges associated with socio-economic objectives. Buildings play a crucial role in smart cities and are closely related to people’s health. Moreover, they are equally essential to meet sustainable objectives. People spend most of their time indoors. Therefore, indoor air quality has a critical impact on health and well-being. With the increasing population of elders, ambient-assisted living systems are required to promote occupational health and well-being. Furthermore, living environments must incorporate monitoring systems to detect unfavorable indoor quality scenarios in useful time. This paper reviews the current state of the art on indoor air quality monitoring systems based on Internet of Things and wireless sensor networks in the last five years (2014–2019). This document focuses on the architecture, microcontrollers, connectivity, and sensors used by these systems. The main contribution is to synthesize the existing body of knowledge and identify common threads and gaps that open up new significant and challenging future research directions. The results show that 57% of the indoor air quality monitoring systems are based on Arduino, 53% of the systems use Internet of Things, and WSN architectures represent 33%. The CO2 and PM monitoring sensors are the most monitored parameters in the analyzed literature, corresponding to 67% and 29%, respectively.

A Combination of DEMATEL and BWM-Based ANP Methods for Exploring the Green Building Rating System in Taiwan

Green buildings are a crucial environmentally friendly component for sustainable human habitation and for the preservation of a healthy ecosystem. This study proposes a novel hybrid model to explore the influential relationship of various indicators and their importance for a green building evaluation system. First, a green building index system is established based on a review of recent literature on green building evaluation systems. Then, the decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) technique is utilized to determine the influential relationship among the criteria. Finally, a novel best worst method (BWM)-based analytic network process (ANP) model is applied to determine the influential weight of the criteria. The result indicated that the top five ranked criteria are all classified within the two dimensions of waste reduction and energy saving. An empirical case study of an example in Taiwan is carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model. Management implications are also provided.
