Both Mature Patches and Expanding Areas of Juniperus thurifera Forests Are Vulnerable to Climate Change But for Different Reasons

Can natural forest expansion contribute to Europe's restoration policy agenda? An interdisciplinary assessment

Natural forest expansion (NFE), that is, the establishment of secondary forest on non-forested land through natural succession, has substantially contributed to the widespread expansion of forests in Europe over the last few decades. So far, EU policies have largely neglected the potential of NFE for meeting policy objectives on restoration. Synthesising recent interdisciplinary research, this paper assesses the challenges and opportunities of NFE in view of contributing to European forest and ecosystem restoration. Specifically, we discuss the potential for supporting climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and forestry and economic use, summarize the current knowledge about societal perceptions and the policymaking on NFE, and make policy recommendations to better use the potential of NFE. We conclude that NFE has the potential to contribute to the European restoration policy agenda if local contexts and possible trade-offs are properly considered.

Early Differentiation of the Phenotypic Space and Performance of Juniperus thurifera Across Woodland-Expanding Areas

Forest expansion after rural abandonment is changing landscapes, bringing new challenges and opportunities. Juvenile performance has an effect in the establishment of new forests and the subsequent acclimation of adult trees. However, most studies have focused on the performance of adult trees. Here, we analysed differences in the phenotypic trait space of juveniles across gradients of Juniperus thurifera woodland expansion and explored which traits shape juveniles’ performance, seeking specific drivers of such differentiation and the role of the ontogeny. Thus, we surveyed functional leaf and plant-size traits in 180 juveniles growing in 18 plots at three different tree density stages (mature woodland, recently established area and a transition zone between both) and recorded local environmental conditions around each individual. We also estimated their radial growth and resilience to drought (in terms of resistance, recovery and resilience) as performance indicators. We found no relevant effects of the study environmental variables, but we did find a shift in the phenotypic space among juveniles across the gradient, with taller crowns and higher amount of leaf N and δ13C at the expanding edge. This trait differentiation across the gradient implied higher performance of young trees growing in old agricultural fields, both in growth rate and drought resilience terms. Our results showed a relevant land-use legacy on early trait differentiation that shapes more efficient phenotypes in the expanding edge compared to those in mature woodlands, suggesting that the future of these new forests is not compromised under current conditions.

Inherent Water-Use Efficiency of Different Forest Ecosystems and Its Relations to Climatic Variables

Inherent water-use efficiency (IWUE) is a vital parameter connecting the carbon and water cycles. However, the factors influencing the IWUE in different forest ecosystems are still a subject of debate. In this work, FLUXNET platform measurements of 67 forest sites were used to detect trends of the IWUE of four forest ecosystems, namely deciduous broadleaf forests (DBF), evergreen broadleaf forests (EBF), needle-leaf forests (ENF), and mixed forests (MF). The IWUE differed significantly among different forest ecosystems and positively correlated with temperature and solar radiation. The IWUE of EBF was the highest at 32.02 g·C·Kg·H2O−1. The values of DBF and MF were similar and higher than that of ENF. With increasing latitude, the IWUE increased first and then decreased, with a maximum of 35° N. The IWUE of EBF was negatively correlated with precipitation and leaf area index. Temperature and solar radiation were the main factors controlling the IWUE of forest ecosystems, whereas precipitation was the major factor controlling the inter-annual variation in the ΔIWUE of forest ecosystems. Our results provide a scientific basis for the study of forest carbon sinks, forest eco-hydrological processes, and forest ecosystem responses to global climatic changes.

Phenotypic Comparison of Three Populations of Juniperus turbinata Guss. in North-Eastern Morocco

Juniperus turbinata Guss. is a native species of Morocco; however, an exhaustive taxonomic description based on phenotypical characterization of north-eastern Moroccan population species is lacking, which might lead to taxonomic confusion. In order to expound the phenotypic description of J. turbinata of the north-eastern Moroccan population and to examine the taxonomic differences within it; a comparative analysis of cones, leaves, and seeds was performed between three populations. A total of 280 samples were compared on the basis of nine measured and eight calculated traits. The results reveal significant interpopulation changes in the studied characteristics of cones, leaves, and seeds. The most discriminating traits were associated with the proportion between cone diameter and number of seeds. We detected the lowest number of seeds in coastal population when compared to other localities, but at the same time, the seeds from the littoral were the longest and the widest. In addition, the semi-continental population had the highest quantity of seeds, and leaves had intermediate values for the majority of the assessed traits. The phenotypical difference between populations demonstrates a certain adaptability of the species in a biogeographical pattern. This study is a contribution to completing the description of patterns of phenotypical differences of the Phoenician juniper in the Mediterranean region, and confirms its evolutionary plasticity linked to adaptation to local environmental conditions.
