Residual Long-Term Effects of Forest Fertilization on Tree Growth and Nitrogen Turnover in Boreal Forest

The adaptability of Ulmus pumila and the sensitivity of Populus sibirica to semi-arid steppe is reflected in the stem and root vascular cambium and anatomical wood traits

Afforestation success is measured by the tree establishment and growth capacity which contribute to a range of ecosystem services. In the Mongolian steppe, Populus sibirica and Ulmus pumila have been tested as candidate species for large afforestation programs, by analyzing their response to a combination of irrigation and fertilization treatments. While in temperate and Mediterranean forest ecosystems, xylogenetic studies provide insight into the trees' plasticity and adaptability, this type of knowledge is non-existent in semi-arid regions, whose climatic features are expected to become a global issue. Furthermore, in general, a comparison between the stem and root response is scarce or absent. In the present study, we show that the anatomical traits of the vascular cambium and the xylem, from stem and root microcores, reflect the previously noted dependence of P. sibirica from irrigation - as they proportionally increase and the higher adaptability of U. pumila to drought - due to the reduced impact across all five characteristics. As the first wood anatomy study of these species in semiarid areas, future research is urgently needed, as it could be a tool for quicker understanding of species' suitability under expected to be exacerbated semi-arid conditions.

Nutrient pools and loss due to the removal of harvesting residue in cedar plantations (a case study from Türkiye)

Determining the nutrient stocks and revealing the extent to which these stocks will be affected by the interventions in forest ecosystems are crucial for sustainable forest management. This study aimed to determine the nutrient stock of cedar (Cedrus libani A. Rich.) plantations at different stands with various diameter classes and estimate the nutrient stock to be removed from the forest due to harvesting. Soil and plant samples were collected from 40 plots in Eskişehir and Afyonkarahisar provinces in Turkey. The variation in the nutrient concentrations and stocks of different components of the ecosystem were evaluated by analysis of variance and the decrease via harvesting by regression analysis. The results showed that the concentrations of N, P, K, Mg, S, Fe, Zn, and Mn were highest in the needles, Ca in the bark, Cu in the needles, dead branches, and root. In the large-diameter forest (LDF), dbh=20.0-35.9 cm, the highest P stock was found in the trees, Fe stock in the forest floor, and S stock in the soil and trees. As a result, the forest floor should be protected as it is the crucial component of both the nutrient cycle and the Fe stock in the ecosystem. In LDF, 28.4-37.3% of the nutrient stored in the trees would be removed from the ecosystem in the case of moderate thinning with whole-tree harvesting, while only 5.9-14.1% of the nutrient stock in the case of stem-only harvesting. For these reasons, leaving logging residues after harvesting in the forest would minimize nutrient loss. The study results showed that improved nutrient management in a forest ecosystem will make a significant contribution to the sustainability of forests.

The Effects of Nitrogen Fertilisation on the Anatomical Properties of the Populus alba L. Clone ‘Villafranca’ Juvenile Wood

This study investigates the effect of nitrogen fertilisation on the anatomical properties of the juvenile wood of the Populus alba L. clone ‘Villafranca’ from an experimental trial near the Drava River in Croatia. Nitrogen was applied for two consecutive years, and the immediate and potential post-treatment effects were investigated. The correlation between annual ring width (ARW) and individual wood anatomical properties was also examined. The fertilisation effect was confirmed after the first year of nitrogen application for all wood anatomical properties except the vessel lumen area (VLA). Fibre length (FL) was reduced, and double cell wall thickness (DCWT), ray area (RA), and cell wall area (CWA) increased. In contrast, the vessel lumen diameter (VLD) and vessel lumen area changed inconsistently between treatments. The second year of nitrogen application was determined to be effective for FL only. Due to the insignificant results in the second year of the application of nitrogen, the post-fertilisation effect of nitrogen fertilisation was not confirmed.

Nitrogen and Boron Dosage Effects on Arginine Accumulation in Scots Pine Needles

Free arginine (Arg) content was observed to multiply when the level of nitrogen (N) nutrition was high, and additional fertilization with boron (B) potentiated this effect. Owing to this feature, conifers can be suggested for use as bioproducers of Arg. Concentrations of Arg in relation to N and B fertilization needed to be better understood. The effect of soil fertilization with N and B on accumulation of these elements and free Arg in one-year-old needles of 16-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees was determined in this study. Plantations were fertilized with doses of N from 0 to 1000 kg ha−1 and B from 0 to 6 kg ha−1. Fertilization with 3 kg ha−1 B at N doses of 200–500 kg ha−1 stimulated the accumulation of N in needles of up to 3.1–3.6% dry weight (DW). The level of Arg in needles increased from 74.7 to 175.9 μmol g−1 DW at these levels of N and B.

The Effect of Nitrogen Fertilization on Tree Growth, Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Leaching—A Modeling Study in a Steep Nitrogen Deposition Gradient in Sweden

Nitrogen (N) fertilization in forests has the potential to increase tree growth and carbon (C) sequestration, but it also means a risk of N leaching. Dynamic models can, if the important processes are well described, play an important role in assessing benefits and risks of nitrogen fertilization. The aim of this study was to test if the ForSAFE model is able to simulate correctly the effects of N fertilization when considering different levels of N availability in the forest. The model was applied for three sites in Sweden, representing low, medium and high nitrogen deposition. Simulations were performed for scenarios with and without fertilization. The effect of N fertilization on tree growth was largest at the low deposition site, whereas the effect on N leaching was more pronounced at the high deposition site. For soil organic carbon (SOC) the effects were generally small, but in the second forest rotation SOC was slightly higher after fertilization, especially at the low deposition site. The ForSAFE simulations largely confirm the N saturation theory which state that N will not be retained in the forest when the ecosystem is N saturated, and we conclude that the model can be a useful tool in assessing effects of N fertilization.
