Stand Transpiration Estimates from Recalibrated Parameters for the Granier Equation in a Chinese Fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) Plantation in Southern China

Rotation age extension synergistically increases ecosystem carbon storage and timber production of Chinese fir plantations in southern China

Afforestation is an effective method to increase carbon (C) sinks and address climate change. It is crucial to understand how the stand growth affects C sequestration capacity, especially when the trade-offs with timber production from plantations have not been fully examined. We used a chronosequence approach to estimate C storage in Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) plantations (including the trees, understory, litter, and soils) at seven stand ages (3, 8-11, 16, 21, 25, 29, and 32 years). Ecosystem C storage increased nonlinearly from 76.4 to 282.2 t ha^-1 with stand age and was fitted with a logistic model that had a maximum C storage and age of 271.9 t ha^-1 and 33 years, respectively, to reach 95% of the maximum stored C. The C increment was mainly contributed by an increase in tree biomass, which ranged from 2.8 to 177.7 t ha^-1 and comprised 4-64% of the total ecosystem C. Live root C (sum of the stump, coarse, and fine root C) showed a logistic increase from 2.0 to 26.3 t ha^-1 with stand age and constituted 2.5-9.3% of ecosystem C. Understory plants and litter represented a small pool (<2% of ecosystem C). The C storage in shrubs and litter slightly increased, while that in herbs decreased as the stands aged. Soil C storage was an important and relatively stable pool, ranging from 69.6 to 130.1 t ha^-1. Stand volume was also best fitted with a logistic model with a maximum value of 552.6 m³ ha^-1. Additionally, the time needed to reach 95% of the maximum volume was 25 years. Hence, extending the rotation age to over 30 years for Chinese fir plantations could potentially maximize the synergistic benefits of C storage to mitigate climate change and obtain timber products for economic profit.

Intra-Annual Wood Formation of Cryptomeria fortunei and Cunninghamia lanceolata in Humid Subtropical China

Monitoring cambial activity is important for a better understanding of the mechanisms governing xylem growth responses to climate change, providing a scientific basis for tree-ring-based climate reconstructions and projections about tree growth under future climate scenarios. It plays an even more important role in investigating evergreen tree growth in regions with less distinct seasonal cycles. Subtropical evergreen forests have been studied in recent years for their sensitivity to climate change, but it remains unclear how xylem growth is driven by subtropical climates. To further understand the climate-growth response strategies of subtropical conifers, we micro-cored Cryptomeria fortunei and Cunninghamia lanceolata weekly in 2016 and 2017 at the humid subtropical Gushan Mountain in southeastern China. Our weekly growth monitoring showed that the vegetation periods of these two species were both approximately 2–3 months longer than trees in temperate and boreal forests. The growth of C. fortunei in 2016 and 2017 and C. lanceolata in 2017 showed a bimodal pattern of xylogenesis, which was induced by summer drought. The results also indicated that the earlier end of the xylem formation was related to the yearly drought stress. These findings provide more specific information about tree growth and evidence of how climate influences wood production at the cellular level in subtropical regions.

Exploring the Influence of Biological Traits and Environmental Drivers on Water Use Variations across Contrasting Forests

Understanding species-specific water use patterns across contrasting sites and how sensitivity of responses to environmental variables changes for different species is critical for evaluating potential forest dynamics and land use changes under global change. To quantify water use patterns and the sensitivity of tree transpiration to environmental drivers among sites and species, sap flow and meteorological data sets from three contrasting climatic zones were combined and compared in this analysis. Agathis australis from NZHP site, Schima wallichii Choisy (native) and Acacia mangium Willd (exotic) from CHS site, Liquidamber formosana Hance, Quercus variabilis Blume and Quercus acutissima Carruth from CJGS site were the dominant trees chosen as our study species. Biological traits were collected to explain the underlying physiological mechanisms for water use variation. Results showed that the strongest environmental drivers of sap flow were photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and temperature across sites, indicating that the response of water use to abiotic drivers converged across sites. Water use magnitude was site specific, which was controlled by site characteristics, species composition and local weather conditions. The species with higher sap flow density (Fd) generally had greater stomatal conductance. Native deciduous broadleaved species had a higher Fd and faster response to stomatal regulation than that of native evergreen broadleaved species (S. wallichii) and conifer species A. australis. The analysis also showed that exotic species (A. mangium) consumed more water than native species (S. wallichii). Trees with diffuse porous and lower wood density had relatively higher Fd for angiosperms, suggesting that water use was regulated by physiological differences. Water use characteristics across sites are controlled by both external factors such as site-specific characteristics (local environmental conditions and species composition) and internal factors such as biological traits (xylem anatomy, root biomass and leaf area), which highlights the complexity of quantifying land water budgets for areas covered by different species.

A Crown Contour Envelope Model of Chinese Fir Based on Random Forest and Mathematical Modeling

The tree crown is an important part of a tree and is closely related to forest growth status, forest canopy density, and other forest growth indicators. Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook) is an important tree species in southern China. A three-dimensional (3D) visualization assistant decision-making system of plantations could be improved through the construction of crown contour envelope models (CCEMs), which could aid plantation production. The goal of this study was to establish CCEMs, based on random forest and mathematical modeling, and to compare them. First, the regression equation of a tree crown was calculated using the least squares method. Then, forest characteristic factors were screened using methods based on mutual information, recursive feature elimination, least absolute shrink and selection operator, and random forest, and the random forest model was established based on the different screening results. The accuracy of the random forest model was higher than that of the mathematical modeling. The best performing model based on mathematical modeling was the quartic polynomial with the largest crown radius as the variable (R-squared (R2) = 0.8614 and root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.2657). Among the random forest regression models, the regression model constructed using mutual information as the feature screening method was the most accurate (R2 = 0.886, RMSE = 0.2406), which was two percentage points higher than mathematical modeling. Compared with mathematical modeling, the random forest model can reflect the differences among trees and aid 3D visualization of a Chinese fir plantation.

A spatial-temporal continuous dataset of the transpiration to evapotranspiration ratio in China from 1981-2015

The ratio of plant transpiration to total terrestrial evapotranspiration (T/ET) captures the role of vegetation in surface-atmosphere interactions. However, several studies have documented a large variability in T/ET. In this paper, we present a new T/ET dataset (also including transpiration, evapotranspiration data) for China from 1981 to 2015 with spatial and temporal resolutions of 0.05° and 8 days, respectively. The T/ET dataset is based on a model-data fusion method that integrates the Priestley-Taylor Jet Propulsion Laboratory (PT-JPL) model with multivariate observational datasets (transpiration and evapotranspiration). The dataset is driven by satellite-based leaf area index (LAI) data from GLASS and GLOBMAP, and climate data from the Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (CERN). Observational annual T/ET were used to validate the model, with R2 and RMSE values were 0.73 and 0.07 (12.41%), respectively. The dataset provides significant insight into T/ET and its changes over the Chinese terrestrial ecosystem and will be beneficial for understanding the hydrological cycle and energy budgets between the land and the atmosphere.

Assessing Environmental Control of Sap Flux of Three Tree Species Plantations in Degraded Hilly Lands in South China

Prerequisite for selection of appropriate tree species in afforestation programs is to understand their water use strategy. Acacia mangium Willd., Schima wallichii Choisy, and Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook are the three main vegetation restoration pioneer species in southern China, but no comparative research on the water use strategy of these three tree species have been reported. Our objective was to gain a detailed understanding of how photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), vapor pressure deficit (VPD), and soil water content (SWC) at different soil depths control the sap flux density (Js) in the dry and wet seasons. We measured the Js of these three tree species by using the thermal dissipation method in low subtropical China. We found that both S. wallichii and C. lanceolata differed clearly in their stomatal behavior from one season to another, while A. mangium did not. The canopy conductance per sapwood area of S. wallichii and C. lanceolata was very sensitive to VPD in the dry season, but not in the wet season. The Js of A. mangium was negatively correlated to SWC in all soil layers and during both seasons, while the other two species were not sensitive to SWC in the deeper layers and only positively correlated to SWC in dry season. Our results demonstrate that the three species have distinct water use strategies and may therefore respond differently to changing climate.
