Abstract
The implementation of a sustainable bio-based economy is considered a top priority today. There is no doubt about the necessity to produce renewable bioenergy and bio-sourced chemicals to replace fossil-derived compounds. Under this scenario, strong efforts have been devoted to efficiently use organic waste as feedstock for biohydrogen production via dark fermentation. However, the technoeconomic viability of this process needs to be enhanced by the valorization of the residual streams generated. The use of dark fermentation effluents as low-cost carbon source for microalgae cultivation arises as an innovative approach for bioproducts generation (e.g., biodiesel, bioactive compounds, pigments) that maximizes the carbon recovery. In a biorefinery context, after value-added product extraction, the spent microalgae biomass can be further valorised as feedstock for biohydrogen production. This integrated process would play a key role in the transition towards a circular economy. This review covers recent advances in microalgal cultivation on dark fermentation effluents (DFE). BioH2 via dark fermentation processes and the involved metabolic pathways are detailed with a special focus on the main aspects affecting the effluent composition. Interesting traits of microalgae and current approaches to solve the challenges associated to the integration of dark fermentation and microalgae cultivation are also discussed.

Cellulosic Fiber Waste Feedstock for Bioethanol Production via Bioreactor-Dependent Fermentation. FERMENTATION-BASEL 2023. Abstract
The bioconversion of environmental wastes into energy is gaining much interest in most developing and developed countries. The current study is concerned with the proper exploitation of some industrial wastes. Cellulosic fiber waste was selected as a raw material for producing bioethanol as an alternative energy source. A combination of physical, chemical, and enzymatic hydrolysis treatments was applied to maximize the concentration of glucose that could be fermented with yeast into bioethanol. The results showed that the maximum production of 13.9 mg/mL of glucose was achieved when 5% cellulosic fiber waste was treated with 40% HCl, autoclaved, and followed with enzymatic hydrolysis. Using SEM and FTIR analysis, the instrumental characterization of the waste fiber treatment confirmed the effectiveness of the degradation by turning the long threads of the fibers into small pieces, in addition to the appearance of new functional groups and peak shifting. A potent yeast strain isolated from rotten grapes was identified as Starmerella bacillaris STDF-G4 (accession number OP872748), which was used to ferment the obtained glucose units into bioethanol under optimized conditions. The maximum production of 3.16 mg/mL of bioethanol was recorded when 7% of the yeast strain was anaerobically incubated at 30 °C in a broth culture with the pH adjusted to 5. The optimized conditions were scaled up from flasks to a fermentation bioreactor to maximize the bioethanol concentration. The obtained data showed the ability of the yeast strain to produce 4.13 mg/mL of bioethanol after the first 6 h of incubation and double the amount after 36 h of incubation to reach 8.6 mg/mL, indicating the efficiency of the bioreactor in reducing the time and significantly increasing the product.

Abstract
The negative global warming impact and global environmental pollution due to fossil fuels mean that the main challenge of modern society is finding alternatives to conventional fuels. In this scenario, biofuels derived from renewable biomass represent the most promising renewable energy sources. Depending on the biomass used by the fermentation technologies, it is possible obtain first-generation biofuels produced from food crops, second-generation biofuels produced from non-food feedstock, mainly starting from renewable lignocellulosic biomasses, and third-generation biofuels, represented by algae or food waste biomass. Although biofuels appear to be the closest alternative to fossil fuels, it is necessary for them to be produced in competitive quantities and costs, requiring both improvements to production technologies and diversification of feedstock. This Special Issue is focused on technological innovations, which include but are not limited to the utilization of different feedstock; different biomass pretreatments; fermentation strategies, such as simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) or separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF); different applied microorganisms used as monoculture or co-culture; and different setups for biofuel fermentation processes.

Abstract
Bioenergy and biochemicals can be sustainably produced through fermentation and anaerobic digestion (AD). However, this bioconversion processes could be more economical if the hydrolysis rates of substrates in bioreactors can be accelerated. In this review, the feasibilities of including enzymatic hydrolysis (EH) in various bioconversion systems were studied to facilitate the biological synergy. The reaction kinetics of EH in bioconversion systems comparing pretreated lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) and food waste (FW) substrates were reviewed. Possible strategies to improve the hydrolysis efficiency were explored, including co-cultivation during enzyme production and replacement of pure enzyme with on-site produced fungal mash during EH. Key insights into improvement of current AD and fermentation technologies were summarized and further formed into suggestions of future directions in techno-economic feasibility of biorefinery using mixture of the first-generation food crop feedstock with FW; and/or co-digestion of FW with LCB.

Abstract
During the industrial processing of agricultural or animal products, large amounts of waste are produced. These wastes, generated in large amounts throughout the seasons of the year, can be considered the most abundant renewable resources on earth. Due to the large availability and richness in components of these raw materials, there is a great interest in their reuse, both from an economical and environmental point of view. This economical interest is based on the fact that a high quantity of such wastes could be used as low-cost raw materials for the production of new value-added compounds, with a further production cost reduction. The environmental concern is derived from their composition, especially the agro-industrial wastes that can contain potentially toxic compounds, which may cause deterioration of the environment when uncontrolled wastes are either burned, left on the soil to decay naturally, or buried underground. Moreover, these materials exhibit both high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) values and give rise to serious pollution problems if not properly discarded. Recycling and transformation of food wastes represent a great opportunity in supporting sustainable development by their conversion into value-added products through the fermentation process.

Abstract
Agricultural food waste is rich in cellulosic and non-cellulosic fermentable substance. In this study, we investigated the bioconversion of pineapple waste cell wall sugars into bioethanol by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation using Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 4126. Soluble and insoluble cell wall sugars were investigated during the fermentation process. Moreover, the fermentation medium was investigated for protein, moisture, ash, lignin and glycerol determinations with a particular focus on the increase in single cell protein due to yeast growth, allowing a total valorization of the resulting fermentation medium, with no further waste production, with respect to environmental sustainability. Soluble and insoluble sugars in the starting material were 32.12% and 26.33% respectively. The main insoluble sugars resulting from the cell wall hydrolysis detected at the beginning of the fermentation, were glucose, xylose and uronic acid. Glucose and mannose were the most prevalent sugars in the soluble sugars fraction. The ethanol theoretical yield, calculated according to dry matter lost, reached up to 85% (3.9% EtOH). The final fermentation substrate was mainly represented by pentose sugars. The protein content increased from 4.45% up to 20.1% during the process.

Abstract
Today, food valorization represents an important challenge to environmental sustainability. Food waste can be used as a substrate for single cell protein production suitable for animal feed. In this study, animal and agricultural food waste, represented by fish, pineapple, banana, apple, and citrus peels, have been used simultaneously as a fermentation substrate for single cell protein production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae, to evaluate the possibility of using a multi complex substrate for a simultaneous biovalorization of different food waste. The fermentation process was implemented by the supplementation of a hydrolytic enzyme and nutrient to allow the best yeast growing conditions. At the end of the process, the final substrate was enriched in protein, reaching up to 40.19% of protein, making the multisubstrate useful for animal feed. The substrate was also investigated for crude lipid, ash, lignin, soluble and insoluble sugar. The substrate composition at the end of the fermentation process was represented by 14.46% of crude lipid, 1.08% ash, 6.29% lignin. Conversely, the soluble and insoluble sugars dropped down from 20.5% to 6.10% and 19.15% to 2.14%, respectively, at the end of the process.

Anaerobic Digestion, Codigestion of Food Waste, and Chicken Dung: Correlation of Kinetic Parameters with Digester Performance and On-Farm Electrical Energy Generation Potential. Abstract
Valorization of agro-food waste through anaerobic digestion (AD) is gaining prominence as alternative method of waste minimization and renewable energy production. The aim of this study was to identify the key parameters for digester performance subjected to kinetic study and semicontinuous operation. Biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests were conducted in two different operating conditions: without mixing (WM) and continuous mixing (CM). Three different substrates, including food waste (FW), chicken dung (CD), and codigestion of FW and CD (FWCD) were used. Further kinetic evaluation was performed to identify mixing’s effect on kinetic parameters and correlation of the kinetic parameters with digester performance (volatile solid removal (VS%) and specific methane production (SMP)). The four models applied were: modified Gompertz, logistic, first-order, and Monod. It was found that the CM mode revealed higher values of Rm and k as compared to the WM mode, and the trend was consistently observed in the modified Gompertz model. Nonetheless, the logistic model demonstrated good correlation of kinetic parameters with VS% and SMP. In the continuous systems, the optimum OLR was recorded at 4, 5, and 7 g VS/L/d for FW, CD, and FWCD respectively. Therefore, it was deduced that codigestion significantly improved digester performance. Electrical energy generation at the laboratory scale was 0.002, 0.003, and 0.006 kWh for the FW, CD, and FWCD substrates, respectively. Thus, projected electrical energy generation at the on-farm scale was 372 kWh, 382 kWh, and 518 kWh per day, respectively. Hence, the output could be used as a precursor for large-scale digester-system optimization.
