Abstract
The impact of food processing on drug absorption, metabolism, and subsequent pharmacological activity is a pressing yet insufficiently explored area of research. Overlooking food-processing-drug interactions can significantly disrupt optimal clinical patient management. The challenges extend beyond merely considering the type and timing of food ingestion as to drug uptake; the specific food processing methods applied play a pivotal role. This study delves into both selected thermal and non-thermal food processing techniques, investigating their potential interference with the established pharmacokinetics of medications. Within the realm of thermal processing, conventional methods like deep fat frying, grilling, or barbecuing not only reduce the enteric absorption of drugs but also may give rise to side-products such as acrylamide, aldehydes, oxysterols, and oxyphytosterols. When produced in elevated quantities, these compounds exhibit enterotoxic and pro-inflammatory effects, potentially impacting the metabolism of various medications. Of note, a variety of thermal processing is frequently adopted during the preparation of diverse traditional herbal medicines. Conversely, circumventing high heat through innovative approaches (e.g., high-pressure processing, pulsed electric fields, plasma technology), opens new avenues to improve food quality, efficiency, bioavailability, and sustainability. However, it is crucial to exercise caution to prevent the excessive uptake of active compounds in specific patient categories. The potential interactions between food processing methods and their consequences, whether beneficial or adverse, on drug interactions can pose health hazards in certain cases. Recognizing this knowledge gap underscores the urgency for intensified and targeted scientific inquiry into the multitude of conceivable interactions among food composition, processing methods, and pharmaceutical agents. A thorough investigation into the underlying mechanisms is imperative. The complexity of this field requires substantial scrutiny and collaborative efforts across diverse domains, including medicine, pharmacology, nutrition, food science, food technology, and food engineering.

Abstract
In recent years, researchers have shown a growing interest in the interactions between different pharmaceutical agents. An intriguing instance lies in the possible interaction between nimodipine and vitamin C. To investigate the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic effects of vitamin C on nimodipine in rats, rats were randomly divided into a nimodipine only group and a combination group (nimodipine + vitamin C). The two groups were given intragastric administration and nimodipine blood concentrations were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrum at different time points. Blood pressure and heart rate were measured via carotid artery cannulation. Pharmacokinetic differences were observed between the nimodipine only group and the combination group at the same dose. Compared with the nimodipine only group, the combination group's main pharmacokinetic parameters of peak concentration and area under the curve increased significantly, and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05); furthermore, the combination group exhibited a significant reduction in average blood pressure, while no significant effects on heart rate were observed. Vitamin C did not affect the activity of CYP450 in rat liver. The pharmacokinetic characteristics and pharmacodynamics of nimodipine were changed by vitamin C administration in rats.

Abstract
Flavonoids have garnered attention because of their beneficial bioactivities. However, some flavonoids reportedly interact with drugs via transporters and may induce adverse drug reactions. This study investigated the effects of food ingredients on organic anion-transporting polypeptide (OATP) 4C1, which handles uremic toxins and some drugs, to understand the safety profile of food ingredients in renal drug excretion. Twenty-eight food ingredients, including flavonoids, were screened. We used ascorbic acid (AA) to prevent curcumin oxidative degradation in our method. Twelve compounds, including apigenin, daidzein, fisetin, genistein, isorhamnetin, kaempferol, luteolin, morin, quercetin, curcumin, resveratrol, and ellagic acid, altered OATP4C1-mediated transport. Kaempferol and curcumin strongly inhibited OATP4C1, and the Ki values of kaempferol (AA(-)), curcumin (AA(-)), and curcumin (AA(+)) were 25.1, 52.2, and 23.5 µM, respectively. The kinetic analysis revealed that these compounds affected OATP4C1 transport in a competitive manner. Antioxidant supplementation was determined to benefit transporter interaction studies investigating the effects of curcumin because the concentration-dependent curve evidently shifted in the presence of AA. In this study, we elucidated the food-drug interaction via OATP4C1 and indicated the utility of antioxidant usage. Our findings will provide essential information regarding food-drug interactions for both clinical practice and the commercial development of supplements.

Abstract
This paper examines the use of vinpocetine in the context of clinical pharmacology. The main and active metabolite of vinpocetine is apovincaminic acid (AVA). Due to the scarce information in the literature on AVA pharmacokinetics, we propose a population pharmacokinetic (PopPK) model for AVA based on a study in healthy volunteers with three different formulations of vinpocetine. The suggested PopPK model (and simulations) could be helpful in ensuring the more effective and safer use of the vinpocetine in the future given the increasing range of suggested indications for its use.

Abstract
The Punica granatum L. (pomegranate) fruit juice contains large amounts of polyphenols, mainly tannins such as ellagitannin, punicalagin, and punicalin, and flavonoids such as anthocyanins, flavan-3-ols, and flavonols. These constituents have high antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, and anticancer activities. Because of these activities, many patients may consume pomegranate juice (PJ) with or without their doctor's knowledge. This may raise any significant medication errors or benefits because of food-drug interactions that modulate the drug's pharmacokinetics or pharmacodynamics. It has been shown that some drugs exhibited no interaction with pomegranate, such as theophylline. On the other hand, observational studies reported that PJ prolonged the pharmacodynamics of warfarin and sildenafil. Furthermore, since it has been shown that pomegranate constituents inhibit cytochrome P450 (CYP450) activities such as CYP3A4 and CYP2C9, PJ may affect intestinal and liver metabolism of CYP3A4 and CYP2C9-mediated drugs. This review summarizes the preclinical and clinical studies that investigated the impact of oral PJ administration on the pharmacokinetics of drugs that are metabolized by CYP3A4 and CYP2C9. Thus, it will serve as a future road map for researchers and policymakers in the fields of drug-herb, drug-food and drug-beverage interactions. Preclinical studies revealed that prolonged administration of PJ increased the absorption, and therefore the bioavailability, of buspirone, nitrendipine, metronidazole, saquinavir, and sildenafil via reducing the intestinal CYP3A4 and CYP2C9. On the other hand, clinical studies are limited to a single dose of PJ administration that needs to be protocoled with prolonged administration to observe a significant interaction.

Abstract
Food-drug interactions should be suspected when a patient is taking their medications as directed and doses are optimized yet therapy is still not optimal (increased adverse effects, decreased efficacy, new adverse effects, etc). In all individuals with suspected food-drug interactions, diet history, baseline laboratory values, drug concentrations, and prescription history are recommended to assess the patient for a possible food-drug interaction. The 3 types of food-drug interactions are pharmaceutical, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic. Pharmaceutical interactions occur with delivery devices or enteral feeding products. Pharmacokinetic interactions include the processes of a drug's release, absorption, distribution, metabolism, and/or elimination, ultimately affecting the effectiveness and safety of therapy. Pharmacodynamic interactions occur when food alters a drug's clinical effect on the body. The most common food-drug interactions exist with fruits (especially grapefruit), dairy, vitamin K, tyramine-containing foods, and alcohol. Patient counseling and collaboration between health-care teams can help patients avoid food-drug interactions. As a result, medication therapy can be optimized and adverse effects can be avoided.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an idiopathic, chronic inflammatory disease with multiple genetic and a variety of environmental risk factors. Although current drugs significantly aid in controlling the disease, many people have led to the application of complementary therapies due to the common belief that they are natural and safe, as well as due to the consideration of the side effect of current drugs. Curcumin, cannabinoids, wheatgrass, Boswellia, wormwood and Aloe vera are among the most commonly used complementary medicines in UC. However, these treatments may have adverse and toxic effects due to unintended interactions with drugs or drug-metabolizing enzymes such as cytochrome P450s; thus, being ignorant of these interactions might cause deleterious effects with severe consequences. In addition, the lack of complete and controlled long-term studies with the use of these complementary medicines regarding drug metabolism pose additional risk and unsafety. Thus, this review aims to give an overview of the potential interactions of drug-metabolizing enzymes with the complementary botanical medicines used in UC, drawing attention to possible adverse effects.

Abstract
Okadaic acid (OA) is an algae-produced lipophilic marine biotoxin that accumulates in the fatty tissue of filter-feeding shellfish. Ingestion of contaminated shellfish leads to the diarrheic shellfish poisoning syndrome. Furthermore, several other effects of OA like genotoxicity, liver toxicity and tumor-promoting properties have been observed, probably linked to the phosphatase-inhibiting properties of the toxin. It has been shown that at high doses OA can disrupt the physical barrier of the intestinal epithelium. As the intestine and the liver do not only constitute a physical, but also a metabolic barrier against xenobiotic exposure, we here investigated the impact of OA on the expression of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes and transporter proteins in human HepaRG cells liver cells in vitro at non-cytotoxic concentrations. The interplay of OA with known CYP inducers was also studied. Data show that the expression of various xenobiotic-metabolizing CYPs was downregulated after exposure to OA. Moreover, OA was able to counteract the activation of CYPs by their inducers. A number of transporters were also mainly downregulated. Overall, we demonstrate that OA has a significant effect on xenobiotic metabolism barrier in liver cells, highlighting the possibility for interactions of OA exposure with the metabolism of drugs and xenobiotics.

Abstract
A rapid and convenient analytical procedure (evaporation-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction with solidification of floating organic droplets) is advanced for determining the concentrations of triazine herbicide residues (e.g. simazine and atrazine) in fruit juices via HPLC-DAD. The technique involves adding 1-dodecanol (low density) and dichloromethane (high density) to the test solution to act as the extraction and volatile solvents, respectively. Calcium oxide is added to generate heat to accelerate the evaporation of dichloromethane, whereupon the 1-dodecanol quickly disperses into small droplets to complete the microextraction process. Thus, there is no need to use a dispersive solvent and heating equipment is also not required. The floating 1-dodecanol is subsequently frozen using an ice bath to facilitate its separation from the sample. Under optimal conditions (250 μL of 1-dodecanol (extraction solvent), 150 μL of CH2Cl2 (volatile solvent), 1250 mg of CaO, and an extraction time of 60 s) the detection procedure is linear over the range 0.05-5 μg mL-1 (with R > 0.99). The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were determined to be 0.0022-0.0034 μg mL-1 and 0.0073-0.0113 μg mL-1, respectively. The recovery of simazine and atrazine in three fruit juices ranged between 78.5% and 96.4% with a relative standard deviation <8.2%. Therefore, the proposed approach can be effectively adopted to analyze the triazine herbicide content in fruit juices. The method has been proved to be simple, reliable, and remarkably efficient.

For exercise and diet, these effects are used sensibly in basic therapies, as in cardiovascular diseases. However, the physiological changes induced by exercise and a modified diet also have the capacity to influence the efficacy and toxicity of several drugs, mainly by affecting different pharmacokinetic mechanisms. This pharmacological plasticity is not clinically relevant in all cases but might play an important role in altering the effects of very common drugs, particularly drugs with a narrow therapeutic window. Therefore, with this review, we provide insights into possible food–drug and exercise–drug interactions to sharpen awareness of the potential occurrence of such effects.
