Abstract
This study aims to develop biodegradable films by combining hemicellulose B (HB) with methylcellulose (MC) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) at two mass ratios, HB/MC 90/10 and HB/CMC 60/40. The effect of plasticizers, glycerol (GLY) and polyethylene glycol (PEG), on these films' mechanical and physicochemical properties was also investigated. Results showed that the film thickness increased with the addition of GLY and PEG. Moisture content was lower in plasticized films, possibly contributing to better storage. Plasticizers also induced more pronounced color changes, intensifying the lightness and yellowness. Physical attributes such as peel ability, foldability, and transparency were also noticeably improved, particularly in films with higher GLY and PEG concentrations. Additionally, plasticizers enhanced the mechanical properties more significantly in the HB/CMC films, as evidenced by improved tensile stress, elongation at break, elastic modulus, and toughness. However, oxygen and water vapor permeabilities, two of the most critical factors in food packaging, were reduced in the HB/MC films with plasticizers compared to the HB/CMC counterparts. The findings of this study bear significant implications for developing sustainable packaging solutions using hemicellulose B isolated from agricultural material processing waste. These biopolymer-based films, in conjunction with biobased plasticizers, such as glycerol biopolymer, can help curtail our reliance on conventional plastics and alleviate the environmental impact of plastic waste.

Abstract
In this study, a novel fresh-keeping edible film was prepared using egg yolk (EY) and chitosan (CS) with varying concentrations of curcumin (Cur) for food packaging. The addition of Cur notably enhanced tensile strength, elongation at break, and water resistance from 15.70 MPa to 24.24 MPa, 43.79 % to 63.69 %, and 1.599 g·mm·(m2·h·kPa)-1 to 1.541 g·mm·(m2·h·kPa)-1, respectively. Cur also impacted moisture content, swelling degree, and film color. SEM revealed a uniform distribution of Cur, creating a smooth and dense film surface. FT-IR analysis suggested that hydrogen bonding facilitated Cur integration into the film network. The films demonstrated excellent UV-blocking and antioxidant properties attributed to Cur's chromogenic and phenolic hydroxyl groups. Consequently, they effectively inhibited lipid oxidation and weight loss in meat, thereby prolonging the shelf-life of chilled pork by at least 2 d. In conclusion, this study provided a simple and cost-effective idea to incorporate actives with EY as a natural emulsifier, presenting an effective solution for developing active packaging materials to enhance the safety and quality of meat products.

Abstract
The study focused on Syzygium cumini Leaf Extract (SCLE) loaded into Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) film via Solution casting. Phytochemical screening revealed carbohydrates, and HPLC analysis identified quercetin, known for promoting wound healing. FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed various functional groups. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) determined the crystallite size to be 14.58 nm. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) showed the dispersion of extracts, and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis detailed the weight percentages of components. Antibacterial activity tests revealed zones of inhibition for S. aureus (15 mm) and E. coli (11 mm). The film exhibited 63.11 % antioxidant activity at 517 nm with DPPH at a 750 μl sample concentration. Drug release kinetics were also studied. In-vitro wound healing using the L929 cell line showed 83 % healing at a 100 μl concentration. Over 14 days, the treatment group's wounds healed completely within 7 days, unlike the control groups which showed no recovery after 14 days. These findings indicate that the SCLE-CMC film is highly effective in promoting wound healing.

Abstract
Frequent change of wound dressings introduces wound inflammation and infections. In this study, we electrospun phenytoin (PHT) loaded ethyl cellulose (EC) microfibers and solvent cast tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) loaded carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) films with the aim to demonstrate tailorable in vitro drug release behaviors suitable for long-term use of wound dressings. Results from tensile testing showed a significant decrease in average elastic moduli from 8.8 ± 0.6 to 3.3 ± 0.3 MPa after incorporating PHT into EC fibers. PHT-loaded EC fibers displayed a slow and zero-ordered release up to 80 % of the total drug at 48 h, while TCH-loaded CMC films demonstrated a rapid and complete release within 30 min. Furthermore, drug-loaded EC/CMC composites were fabricated into fiber-in-film and fiber-on-film composites. Fiber-in-film composites showed stage release of TCH and PHT at 8 h, while fiber-on-film composites demonstrated simultaneous release of PHT and TCH with a prolonged release of TCH from CMC films. In general, electrospun PHT-loaded EC microfibers, solvent cast TCH-loaded CMC films, and their composites were studied to provide a fundamental scientific understanding on the novelty of the ability to modulate drug release characteristics based on the composite designs.

Abstract
Antibiotics comprise one of the most successful groups of pharmaceutical products. Still, they have been associated with developing bacterial resistance, which has become one of the most severe problems threatening human health today. This context has prompted the development of new antibiotics or co-treatments using innovative tools to reverse the resistance context, combat infections, and offer promising antibacterial therapy. For the development of new alternatives, strategies, and/or antibiotics for controlling bacterial growth, it is necessary to know the target bacteria, their classification, morphological characteristics, the antibiotics currently used for therapies, and their respective mechanisms of action. In this regard, genomics, through the sequencing of bacterial genomes, has generated information on diverse genetic resources, aiding in the discovery of new molecules or antibiotic compounds. Nanotechnology has been applied to propose new antimicrobials, revitalize existing drug options, and use strategic encapsulating agents with their biochemical characteristics, making them more effective against various bacteria. Advanced knowledge in bacterial sequencing contributes to the construction of databases, resulting in advances in bioinformatics and the development of new antimicrobials. Moreover, it enables in silico antimicrobial susceptibility testing without the need to cultivate the pathogen, reducing costs and time. This review presents new antibiotics and biomedical and technological innovations studied in recent years to develop or improve natural or synthetic antimicrobial agents to reduce bacterial growth, promote well-being, and benefit users.

Abstract
The coating on fruits and vegetables increases the shelf-life by providing protection against their spoilage. The existing petroleum-based coating materials have considerable health threats. Edible coating materials prepared with the cellulose derivative extracted from the waste biomass could be a sustainable alternative and environment friendly process to increase the shelf-life periods of the post-harvest crops. Selection of suitable waste biomass and extraction of cellulose are the critical steps for the synthesis of cellulose-based edible film. Conversion of extracted cellulose into cellulosic macromolecular derivatives such as carboxy-methyl-cellulose (CMC) is vital for synthesizing edible coating formulation. Applications of sophisticated tools and methods for the characterization of the coated fruits would be helpful to determine the efficiency of the coating material. In this review, we focused on: i) criteria for the selection of suitable waste biomass for extraction of cellulose, ii) pretreatment and extraction process of cellulose from the different waste biomasses, iii) synthesis processes of CMC by using extracted cellulose, iv) characterizations of CMC as food coating materials, v) various formulation techniques for the synthesis of the CMC based food coating materials and vi) the parameters which are used to evaluate the shelf-life performance of different coated fruits.

Abstract
In this work, Tridax Procumbens Extracts (TPE) were blended with Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), and film was developed through the casting method. The phytochemical screening of the TPE/CMC film was carried out and found the presence of carbohydrates, tannins, saponins, and cardiac glycosides. The presence of elements such as C, O, Na, P, Cl, K, Ca, Mn, and Nb in TP/CMC film was confirmed through EDX. The melting point of the film was found around 291 ± 0.5 °C which was determined through the DSC curve. The maximum tensile strength of the TPE/CMC was found as 14 ± 0.5 MPa. The film showed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Vibrio cholera compared to the control. Cell viability study exhibited 95 % and 98 % cell proliferation for the test film after interacting with the L929 cell line for 18 h and 24 h. The optical contact angle of the TPE/CMC film was also determined. The in-vivo, wound healing studies on adult mice showed healing within 10 days only and the histopathological results revealed the maximum number of fibroblasts with a high density of collagen fibers in the test group indicating that the prepared film can be an effective wound dressing material.

Abstract
The utilization of microcarriers is an effective technique to protect and slow down the release of active ingredients, while the combination of microcarriers and film materials is an important way to expand the application scenario of active ingredients. The aim of this study was to develop a simple and facile strategy for designing a multifunctional bilayer bioactive film that combines stable mechanical properties, sustained-release characteristics for active ingredients with good antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The EGCG-loaded chitosan active microspheres were prepared by sol-gel method, and then the carboxymethyl cellulose solution containing the active microspheres was assembled onto the carboxymethyl chitosan gel substrate based on intermolecular hydrogen bonding to construct a film with a stable bilayer structure. The results indicated that the bilayer film had dense microstructure and excellent mechanical strength (37.05 MPa), and exhibited UV-blocking properties and excellent gas barrier performance. Meanwhile, the loading of active ingredients (EGCG) in the microspheres enabled the bilayer film to exhibit excellent antioxidant and antibacterial properties, and the controlled release of EGCG by the film was sustainable and showed pH responsiveness. The results of this work provide a new perspective for the design and development of bio-based active packaging film with tunable functional characteristics.

Abstract
Curcumin (CUR; 0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.02 %) was loaded into binary 75/25 blend films based on polysaccharides (carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), gum Arabic (GAR), octenyl succinic anhydride modified starch (OSA), water-soluble soy polysaccharides (WSSP)) and gelatin (GEL). The GAR-based system was the least rough and, consequently, the most transparent of the films. An opposite result was found for the WSSP-based film. Despite the phase separation, the CMC75/GEL25 film exhibited excellent mechanical strength and stiffness. CUR improved the UV/VIS light-barrier characteristics of the films, but did not affect most of other physiochemical properties. X-ray diffractograms revealed that CUR provoked the rearrangement of the triple helical structure of GEL. As highly erodible, the CMC75/GEL25 carrier ensured the fastest and the most complete release of CUR. The OSA75/GEL25 system exhibited an opposite behavior. The kinetic profiles of the antiradical activity of the films did not reflect CUR release. A comparison of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH*) scavenging on the plateau revealed that the CUR-supplemented films had quite comparable antiradical potential. The CMC75/GEL25 system exhibited the highest colorimetric stability, likely as a result of complete encapsulation of CUR in the GEL-rich microspheres. Weak symptoms of physical aging (enthalpy relaxation) were found in the films.

Abstract
Edible packaging has been developed as a biodegradable and non-toxic alternative to traditional petroleum-based food packaging. Biopolymeric edible films, in addition to their passive protective function, may also play a bioactive role as vehicles for bioactive compounds of importance to human health. In recent years, a new generation of edible food packaging has been developed to incorporate ingredients with functional potential that have beneficial effects on consumer health. Curcumin, a bioactive compound widely used as a natural dye obtained from turmeric rhizomes (Curcuma longa L.), has a broad spectrum of beneficial properties for human health, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, antioxidant, anti-cancer, and other activities. To demonstrate these properties, curcumin has been explored as a bioactive agent for the development of bioactive packaging, which can be referred to as functional packaging and used in food. The aim of this review was to describe the current and potential research on the development of functional-edible-films incorporating curcumin for applications such as food packaging.

Abstract
Nutraceuticals, functional foods, immunity boosters, microcapsules, nanoemulsions, edible packaging, and safe food are the new progressive terms, adopted to describe the food industry. Also, the rising awareness among the consumers regarding these has created an opportunity for the food manufacturers and scientists worldwide to use food as a delivery vehicle. Packaging performs a very imminent role in the food supply chain as well as it is a consequential part of the process of food manufacturing. Edible packaging is a swiftly emerging art of science in which edible biopolymers like lipids, polysaccharides, proteins, resins, etc. and other consumable constituents extracted from various non-conventional sources like microorganisms are used alone or imbibed together. These edible packaging are indispensable and are meant to be consumed with the food. This shift in paradigm from traditional food packaging to edible, environment friendly, delivery vehicles for bioactive compounds have opened new avenues for the packaging industry. Bioactive compounds imbibed in food systems are gradually degenerated, or may change their properties due to internal or external factors like oxidation reactions, or they may react with each other thus reducing their bioavailability and ultimately may result in unacceptable color or flavor. A combination of novel edible food-packaging material and innovative technologies can serve as an excellent medium to control the bioavailability of these compounds in food matrices. One promising technology for overcoming the aforesaid problems is encapsulation. It can be used as a method for entrapment of desirable flavors, probiotics, or other additives in order to apprehend the impediments of the conventional edible packaging. This review explains the concept of encapsulation by exploring various encapsulating materials and their potential role in augmenting the performance of edible coatings/films. The techniques, characteristics, applications, scope, and thrust areas for research in encapsulation are discussed in detail with focus on development of sustainable edible packaging.
