Development of Pectin-Based Aerogels with Several Excellent Properties for the Adsorption of Pb2

Adsorptive performances and valorization of green synthesized biochar-based activated carbon from banana peel and corn cob composites for the abatement of Cr(VI) from synthetic solutions: Parameters, isotherms, and remediation studies

This study intended to remove Cr(VI) from an aqueous synthetic solution employing synthesized biochar adsorbent from a blend of locally sourced banana peel, and corn cob biomass wastes. An equal ratio of the prepared powder was activated with ZnCl2 solution (1:1 wt basis) and carbonized for 2 h at 600 °C. The proximate analysis of the selected BP-CCAC@ZC3 biochar was conducted. Subsequently, its surface area, surface functions, and morphology were examined using BET analysis, FTIR, and SEM techniques, respectively. The proximate analysis of BP-CCAC@ZC3 showed a moisture content of 2.37 ± 0.80 %, an ash content of 8.07 ± 0.75 %, volatile matter of 19.38 ± 2.66 %, and fixed carbon of 70.18 %. It was found that the synthesized BP-CCAC@ZC3 had 432.149 m2/g of a specific area as per the BET surface area analysis. The highest efficiency for Cr(VI) removal was determined to be 97.92 % through adsorption batch tests using a dose of 0.4 g of BP-CCAC@ZC3, an initial Cr(VI) concentration of 20 mg/L, pH of 2, and 35 min contact time. Likewise, the adsorption process was effectively described by the Langmuir isotherm model, which had a high correlation coefficient (R 2 = 0.9977) and a maximum adsorption capacity of 19.16 mg/g, indicating a monolayer adsorption mechanism. The BP-CCAC@ZC3 biochar exhibited reusability for up to four cycles with only a slight decrease in effectiveness, highlighting its potential for sustainable wastewater treatment. Overall, using corn cob and banana peel composites to synthesize activated carbon with ZnCl2 offers a promising method for effectively removing Cr(VI) containing wastewater.

Physicochemical properties and Pb2+ adsorption capacity of freeze-dried hawthorn pectin fractions by gradient ethanol precipitation

Three fractions of FHP20, FHP40 and FHP60 were obtained from freeze-dried hawthorn pectin by gradient ethanol precipitation (20-60 %), and their physicochemical properties and adsorption performance on Pb²⁺ were investigated. It was found that the content of galacturonic acid (GalA) and esterification of FHP fractions gradually reduced with the increase of ethanol concentration. FHP60 had the lowest molecular weight (60.69 × 10³ Da), and the composition and proportion of monosaccharides were significantly different. The experimental results of Pb²⁺ adsorption showed that the adsorption process fitted well with the Langmuir monolayer adsorption and the pseudo-second-order models. Our findings suggested that pectin fractions with good homogeneity of molecular weight and chemical construction can be obtained by gradient ethanol precipitation, and hawthorn pectin could be developed as a potential adsorbent for Pb²⁺ removal.

Divalent metal ion removal from simulated water using sustainable starch aerogels: Effect of crosslinking agent concentration and sorption conditions

This paper evaluates corn starch aerogels, studying different crosslinking agent (trisodium citrate) concentrations (1:1, 1:1.5, and 1:2) and sorption conditions (contact time, adsorbent weight, and initial concentration) regarding the potentially toxic elements (PTEs) [Cd(II) or Zn(II)] adsorption of the aqueous systems. Besides, other properties of aerogels, such as structural properties, specific surface area, and mechanical performance, were evaluated. For adsorption results, better values were observed in adsorption capacity and efficiency for the initial concentration of 100 ppm. In addition, an adsorption time of 12 h and an adsorbent weight of 3.0 g obtained better results due to the possible balance in this time and the high specific surface area available for Cd(II) adsorption. As for the type of adsorbent, the Aero 1:1.5 sample (intermediate crosslinking agent concentration) obtained better results, possibly due to the high porosity, smaller pore sizes, high pore density, and high specific surface area (198 m²·g^-1). In addition, hydroxyl groups in the starch aerogel removed Cd(II) ions with 30 % adsorption efficiency. Lastly, Aero 1:1.5 obtained a high mechanical strength at compression and a satisfactory compressive modulus. In contrast, starch aerogels did not absorb the Zn(II) ion.

Current Advancements in Pectin: Extraction, Properties and Multifunctional Applications

Pectin is a heterogeneous hydrocolloid present in the primary cell wall and middle lamella in all dicotyledonous plants, more commonly in the outer fruit coat or peel as compared to the inner matrix. Presently, citrus fruits and apple fruits are the main sources for commercial extraction of pectin, but ongoing research on pectin extraction from alternate fruit sources and fruit wastes from processing industries will be of great help in waste product reduction and enhancing the production of pectin. Pectin shows multifunctional applications including in the food industry, the health and pharmaceutical sector, and in packaging regimes. Pectin is commonly utilized in the food industry as an additive in foods such as jams, jellies, low calorie foods, stabilizing acidified milk products, thickener and emulsifier. Pectin is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry for the preparation of medicines that reduce blood cholesterol level and cure gastrointestinal disorders, as well as in cancer treatment. Pectin also finds use in numerous other industries, such as in the preparation of edible films and coatings, paper substitutes and foams. Due to these varied uses of pectin in different applications, there is a great necessity to explore other non-conventional sources or modify existing sources to obtain pectin with desired quality attributes to some extent by rational modifications of pectin with chemical and enzymatic treatments.
