Abstract
Essential oils are key ingredients in the development of edible films and provide a diverse approach to improving food preservation, as well as sensory qualities. The pectin and kappa-carrageenan composite films were obtained by adding peppermint essential oil in different quantities. The films after their fabrication were thoroughly evaluated for their attributes, which included mechanical, barrier, optical, chemical, thermal, and antioxidant properties. The visual assessment of the films demonstrated that PEO-loaded films showed a uniform, homogenous, and slightly yellowish appearance. There was an increase in the thickness (0.045 ± 0.006 to 0.060 ± 0.008 mm), elongation at break (12.73 ± 0.74 to 25.05 ± 1.33 %), and water vapor permeability (0.447 ± 0.014 to 0.643 ± 0.014 (g*mm)/(m2*h*kPa)) was observed with the addition of PEO. However, tensile strength (45.84 ± 3.69 to 29.80 ± 2.10 MPa) and moisture content (25.83 ± 0.046 to 21.82 ± 0.23 %) decreased with the incorporation of PEO. Furthermore, thermal and antioxidant properties were enhanced by the inclusion of PEO. The presented investigation can be employed to synthesize food packaging material with antioxidant properties with potential applications in food packaging.

Abstract
The trends in food packaging technologies are shifting toward utilizing natural and environmentally friendly materials prepared from biopolymers such as kappa carrageenan to replace synthetic polymers. In the current study, varying amounts (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3%) of grapefruit essential oil (GFO) were incorporated in kappa carrageenan-based edible films to improve their physicochemical properties. The developed film samples were characterized for their barrier, mechanical, morphological, optical, thermal, antioxidant, and biodegradable properties. The results obtained showed that the tensile strength of the carrageenan films enhanced significantly from 65.20 ± 4.71 to 98.21 ± 6.35 MPa with the incorporation of GFO in a concentration-dependent manner. FTIR and SEM analysis confirmed the intermolecular bonding between carrageenan and GFO, resulting in the formation of compact films. Incorporating GFO significantly enhanced the thermal resistance of oil-loaded films, as confirmed by TGA, DSC, and DTG analysis. The addition of GFO led to a substantial increase in the radical scavenging activity of the films, as evidenced by the DPPH and ABTS assays. Furthermore, the developed films were biodegradable in soil and seawater environments, indicating their potential as a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics. Findings demonstrated that GFO can be used as a natural antioxidant agent in kappa carrageenan-based films for potential applications in food packaging.

Abstract
The present review paper focuses on recent developments in edible films and coatings made of base compounds from biological sources, namely plants, animals, algae, and microorganisms. These sources include by-products, residues, and wastes from agro-food industries and sea products that contribute to sustainability concerns. Chitosan, derived from animal biological sources, such as crustacean exoskeletons, has been the most studied base compound over the past three years. Polysaccharides typically constitute no more than 3-5% of the film/coating base solution, with some exceptions, like Arabic gum. Proteins and lipids may be present in higher concentrations, such as zein and beeswax. This review also discusses the enrichment of these bio-based films and coatings with various functional and/or bioactive compounds to confer or enhance their functionalities, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-enzymatic properties, as well as physical properties. Whenever possible, a comparative analysis among different formulations was performed. The results of the applications of these edible films and coatings to fruit and vegetable products are also described, including shelf life extension, inhibition of microbial growth, and prevention of oxidation. This review also explores novel types of packaging, such as active and intelligent packaging. The potential health benefits of edible films and coatings, as well as the biodegradability of films, are also discussed. Finally, this review addresses recent innovations in the edible films and coatings industry, including the use of nanotechnologies, aerogels, and probiotics, and provides future perspectives and the challenges that the sector is facing.

Abstract
Carrageenan (CR) is a renewable polysaccharide material for packaging application due to its good film-forming property, but its use can be limited by the water solubility. In this research, CR hydrogels were modified by quaternary ammonium surfactants with different length of hydrocarbon tails (n, 8≦n≦16) by adsorption method and waterproof films were obtained after drying. The composition and charge interaction of composite films was confirmed by FTIR. Both thermogravimetric analysis and energy dispersive spectrometer indicated that the surfactant ions replaced K+ to form complexes with CR. The X-ray diffraction revealed the decreased amorphous nature of composite films compared to neat CR film. Water-related physical properties, such as water content, weight percentage change after contact with water, water vapor transmission, and water contact angle were intimately related to n. When 8≦n≦14, the waterproof properties were enhanced with the increase of n. Meanwhile, the waterproof property of composite film was ascertained by the no leakage result in the boiling water packaging experiment. When n = 16, sandwich structure was found in the sectional micromorphology images, and water bag structure formed after immersed into water. By comparing the mechanical properties of the composite films in different condition, we found that quaternary ammonium surfactants improved significantly the tensile strength in water and increased elongation at break in dry state. The composite films can be used as water induced voltage generator for their polyelectrolyte nature. Benefiting from the high stability of the composite films in water, their water-induced voltage generation process had good recyclability. Due to the antimicrobial activity of the quaternary ammonium salts and the waterproof property, composite films were more stable and degraded more slowly than neat CR film in nature environment.

Abstract
Hepcidin has been identified as an important antimicrobial peptide exerting important innate immunomodulatory activities in many fish species. In the present study, reverse transcription PCR coupled with the rapid amplification of cDNA ends was used to obtain the full-length cDNA of the crescent sweetlips hepcidin gene, which is 829 bp in length and includes an 273 bp ORF encoding a peptide with 90 amino acid residues. Sequence alignment showed a typical RXKR motif and eight conserved cysteine residues in the deduced amino acid sequences. Four disulfide bonds were predicted to form between these eight cysteines, which may stabilize the hairpin structure in hepcidin molecule. Furthermore, phylogenetic analysis showed that the deduced amino acid sequences of crescent sweetlips hepcidin had high sequence homology to hepcidins from fish species of Eupercaria. In addition, the crescent sweetlips hepcidin peptide demonstrated a strong antimicrobial activity in vitro against several types of pathogenic bacteria in fish. In conclusion, the obtained results suggested that crescent sweetlips hepcidin possessed the typical structure similar to other fish hepcidins and had strong antibacterial activity, which showed great potential in the prevention of fish diseases in aquaculture.

Abstract
In this study, a novel absorbable hemostatic agent was developed using carrageenan (CRG) as a natural polymer and cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs). CRG-CeO2-0.5 and CRG-CeO2-1 composites were prepared by compositing CeO2 to CRG + CeO2 at a weight ratio of 0.5:100 and 1:100, respectively. The physicochemical and structural properties of these compounds were studied and compared with pristine CRG. Upon incorporation of CeO2 nanoparticles into the CRG matrix, significant reductions in hydrogel degradation were observed. In addition, it was noted that CRG-CeO2 exhibited better antibacterial and hemostatic properties than CRG hydrogel without CeO2 NPs. The biocompatibility of the materials was tested using the NIH 3T3 cell line, and all samples were found to be nontoxic. Particularly, CRG-CeO2-1 demonstrated superior hemostatic effects, biocompatibility, and a lower degradation rate since more CeO2 NPs were present in the CRG matrix. Therefore, CRG-CeO2-1 has the potential to be used as a hemostatic agent and wound dressing.

Abstract
Speciation is the key parameter in solution chemistry that describes the composition, concentration, and oxidation state of each chemical form of an element present in a sample. The speciation study of complex polyatomic ions has remained challenging because of the large number of factors affecting stability and the limited number of direct methods. To address these challenges, we developed the speciation atlas of 10 polyoxometalates commonly used in catalytic and biological applications in aqueous solutions, where the speciation atlas provides both a species distribution database and a predictive model for other polyoxometalates to be used. Compiled for six different polyoxometalate archetypes with three types of addenda ions based on 1309 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra under 54 different conditions, the atlas has revealed a previously unknown behavior of polyoxometalates that may account for their potency as biological agents and catalysts. The atlas is intended to promote the interdisciplinary use of metal oxides in various scientific fields.

Abstract
Natural polysaccharides are essential to a wide range of fields, including medicine, food, and cosmetics, for their various physiochemical and biological properties. However, they still have adverse effects limiting their further applications. Consequently, possible structural modifications should be carried out on the polysaccharides for their valorization. Recently, polysaccharides complexed with metal ions have been reported to enhance their bioactivities. In this paper, we synthesized a new crosslinked biopolymer based on sodium alginate (AG) and carrageenan (CAR) polysaccharides. The biopolymer was then exploited to form complexes with different metal salts including MnCl2·4H2O, FeCl3·6H2O, NiCl2·6H2O, and CuCl2·2H2O. The four polymeric complexes were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), elemental analysis, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), magnetic susceptibility, molar conductivity methods, and thermogravimetric analysis. The X-ray crystal structure of the Mn(II) complex is tetrahedral and belongs to the monoclinic crystal system with the space group P121/n1. The Fe(III) complex is octahedral and crystal data fit with the cubic crystal system with the space group Pm-3m. The Ni(II) complex is tetrahedral and crystal data correspond to the cubic crystal arrangement with the space group Pm-3m. The data estimated for the Cu(II) polymeric complex revealed that it is tetrahedral and belongs to the cubic system with the space group Fm-3m. The antibacterial study showed significant activity of all the complexes against both Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus luteus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium) pathogenic strains. Similarly, the various complexes revealed an antifungal activity against Candida albicans. The Cu(II) polymeric complex recorded a higher antimicrobial activity with an inhibitory zone reaching 4.5 cm against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and the best antifungal effect of 4 cm. Furthermore, higher antioxidant values of the four complexes were obtained with DPPH scavenging activity varying from 73 to 94%. The two more biologically effective complexes were then selected for the viability cell assessments and in vitro anticancer assays. The polymeric complexes revealed excellent cytocompatibility with normal human breast epithelial cells (MCF10A) and a high anticancer potential with human breast cancer cells (MCF-7) which increase significantly in a dose-dependent manner.

Abstract
The innovation of novel chemosensor probes for the recognition of trace volatile organic compounds is critical due to their hazardous effect on the environment and human health. A nitro-group integrated quinoxaline probe with a profound discriminative fluorescence 'turn-on' response to mesitylene was fabricated into guar gum and i-carrageenan, two biopolymer-based hydrogel matrices, to develop compact, portable fluorogenic hydrogel sensors and assess their fluorescence properties. A comparative characterization-based analysis of native, probe-associated, and probe-analyte-associated hydrogels, (comprising of FT-IR, XRD, TGA) was investigated to ascertain the overall compatibility of the hydrogel-based sensors for use as a smart rapid detection tool. Dynamic rheological measurements also validated the mechanical stability and robustness of the developed hydrogel matrices. Fluorescence spectroscopic investigations yielded promising results of 0.15 ppm limit of detection (LOD) in guar gum and 0.29 ppm LOD in i-carrageenan hydrogels respectively. FESEM and Fluorescence microscopy studies represented the morphological variations of the hydrogel sensors on interaction with mesitylene. The practical feasibility of the chemosensor in hydrogel form for mesitylene detection in the vapor phase was also explored. Probe-embedded hydrogels with injectable property was shown, depicting its use as security ink for information encryption functions. This approach of incorporating chemosensors into biobased hydrogel networks has the potential to broaden its opportunities in the field of chemical, biomedical, and environmental sensing sectors.

Abstract
We investigated the effects of different proportions of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) on the properties of κ-carrageenan film. Biodegradable κ-carrageenan/HPMC films (κCHM film) were prepared by the solution casting method and their physicochemical properties were evaluated. The results show that the addition of HPMC enhanced oxygen barrier capacity, mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break) and thermal stability. Notably, when the addition of HPMC increased to 6% of κ-carrageenan (w:w), the κCHM-6 film not only effectively improved water resistance, including lower water solubility, water vapor permeability and higher water contact angle, but also made the structure of the κCHM-6 film more compact. Moreover, rheological measurement and atomic force microscopy characterization showed that κ-carrageenan had suitable compatibility with HPMC. Attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis further confirmed the enhancement of hydrogen bond interactions. This finding could contribute to promoting the potential application of κCHM film in food packaging.
