Titanium Dioxide Promotes the Growth and Aggregation of Calcium Phosphate and Monosodium Urate Mixed Crystals

The increased utilization of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (TNPs) in various industrial and consumer products has raised concerns regarding its harmful effect due to its accumulation within the different systems of the human body. Here, we focused on the influence of TNPs on the growth and aggregation of two crucial crystalline substances, calcium phosphate (CaP) and monosodium urate (MSU), particularly its implications in gout disease. In this study, we adopted microscopic techniques and generated kinetic models to examine the interactions between TNPs, CaP and MSU, and crystallization, under controlled laboratory conditions. Our findings reveal that TNPs not only facilitate the growth of these crystals but also promote their co-aggregations. Crystal dissolution kinetics also exhibit that an increase in TNPs concentration corresponds to a reduction in the dissolution rate of CaP and MSU crystals in presence of the dissoluting agent hydroxycitrate (Hcit). These observations suggest that TNPs can stabilize CaP+MSU mixed crystals, which underscores the significance of TNPs' exposure in the pathogenesis of gout disease.

Cost estimation of synthesis and utilization of nano-adsorbents on the laboratory and industrial scales: A detailed review

The recent regulations pertaining to the circular economy have unlocked new prospects for researchers. In contrast to the unsustainable models associated with the linear economy, integration of concepts of circular economy braces reducing, reusing, and recycling of waste materials into high-end products. In this regard, adsorption is a promising and cost-effective water treatment technology for handling conventional and emerging pollutants. Numerous studies are published annually to investigate the technical performance of nano-adsorbents and nanocomposites in terms of adsorption capacity and kinetics. Yet, economic performance evaluation is rarely discussed in the literature. Even if an adsorbent shows high removal efficiency towards a specific pollutant, its high preparation and/or utilization costs might hinder its real-life use. This tutorial review aims at illustrating cost estimation methods for the synthesis and utilization of conventional and nano-adsorbents. The current treatise discusses the synthesis of adsorbents on a laboratory scale where the raw material, transportation, chemical, energy, and any other costs are discussed. Moreover, equations for estimating the costs at the large-scale adsorption units for wastewater treatment are illustrated. This review focuses on introducing these topics to non-specialized readers in a detailed but simplified manner.

Decoration of sodium carboxymethylcellulose gel microspheres with modified lignin to enhanced methylene blue removal

The introduction of active groups from biomass is currently the most promising alternative method for increasing the adsorption effect of dyes. In this study, modified aminated lignin (MAL) rich in phenolic hydroxyl and amine groups was prepared by amination and catalytic grafting. The factors influencing the modification conditions of the content of amine and phenolic hydroxyl groups were explored. Chemical structural analysis results confirmed that MAL was successfully prepared using a two-step method. The content of phenolic hydroxyl groups in MAL significantly increased to 1.46 mmol/g. MAL/sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC) gel microspheres (MCGM) with enhanced methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacity owing to the formation of a composite with MAL were synthesized by a sol-gel process followed by freeze-drying and using multivalent cations Al³⁺ as cross-linking agents. In addition, the effects of the MAL to NaCMC mass ratio, time, concentration, and pH on the adsorption of MB were explored. Benefiting from a sufficient number of active sites, MCGM exhibited an ultrahigh adsorption capacity for MB removal, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 118.30 mg/g. These results demonstrated the potential of MCGM for wastewater treatment applications.
