Abstract
Thixotropy is a fascinating feature present in many gel systems that has garnered a lot of attention in the medical field in recent decades. When shear stress is applied, the gel transforms into sol and immediately returns to its original state when resting. The thixotropic nature of the hydrogel has inspired scientists to entrap and release enzymes, therapeutics, and other substances inside the human body, where the gel acts as a drug reservoir and can sustainably release therapeutics. Furthermore, thixotropic hydrogels have been widely used in various therapeutic applications, including drug delivery, cornea regeneration and osteogenesis, to name a few. Because of their inherent biocompatibility and structural diversity, peptides are at the forefront of cutting-edge research in this context. This review will discuss the rational design and self-assembly of peptide-based thixotropic hydrogels with some representative examples, followed by their biomedical applications.

Abstract
Nowadays, gels are formed by small molecules self-assembling under the influence of various non-covalent interactions. They can be easily perturbed, which allows for the careful tweaking of their properties. They are kinetically confined, and following production, they usually do not demonstrate time-variable changes in material properties. When exposed to external stimuli such as temperature, pH, light, enzymes, redox, and chemical analytes, such materials may become switchable, leading to the reconfiguration of the gel matrix into a different type of network. The transformations allow gel-to-gel transitions, while the changes in the molecular aggregation result in the alteration of the physical and chemical properties of the gel with time. Here, we discuss various methods used to achieve gel-to-gel transitions by modifying a pre-formed gel material through external perturbation. The dynamic modification of gels allows the construction of an array of gels with various properties from a single material, which eventually extends the limit of application of the gels.

Abstract
Bis(urea)s based on the 4,4'-methylenebis(2,6-diethylphenylene) (4,4'-MDEP) spacer are highly effective low molecular weight gelators, and the first single crystal structure of a bis(urea) based on this spacer is reported. The structure is a conformational isomorph with eight crystallographically independent molecules (Z' = 8) arranged in four tennis-ball type dimers with the 2,6-diethylphenylene units adopting five different conformations in the ratio 4:5:3:2:2. The awkward shape and conformational promiscuity arising from the orientations of the ethyl groups in this system is linked to its gelation behavior. A total of seven 4,4'-MDEP derivatives have been prepared, and six are versatile gelators, confirming the particularly effective nature of the MDEP spacer. Only the nitrophenyl derivative does not form gels, likely because of intramolecular CH···O hydrogen bonding arising from the electron-withdrawing nature of the nitro substituent and hence inhibition of the urea α-tape hydrogen-bonded motif.

Abstract
Herein, we show that twisted molecular nanoribbons with as many as 322 atoms in the aromatic core are efficient gelators capable of self-assembling into ordered π-gels with morphologies and sol–gel transitions that vary with the length of the nanoribbon. In addition, the nanoribbon gels show a red fluorescence and also pseudoconductivity values in the same range as current state-of-the-art π-gels. Herein, we show that twisted molecular nanoribbons with as many as 322 atoms in the aromatic core are efficient gelators capable of self-assembling into ordered π-gels with morphologies and sol–gel transitions that vary with the length of the nanoribbon.![]()

Abstract
Rheological properties are critical for determining real applications of supramolecular gels in various fields. Correspondingly, the modulation of gel rheology will be very important for meeting real requirements. In this aspect, a few strategies were applied to tune the rheological behaviors of supramolecular gels, but some specific interactions like charge transfer (CT) interactions were less explored at the molecular level. Herein, we report a pyrene-containing derivative of diphenylalanine as a donor gelator and naphthalenediimide or 3,5-dinitrobenzene as matching acceptor molecules. It was found that the viscoelastic properties and strength of the original gel could be tuned through addition of different acceptor molecules to the original gel with changing the ratios of the selected acceptor molecules. As a result, storage modulus was continuously adjusted over a wide range from 190,000 to 50,000 Pa by CT interactions. Furthermore, the mechanism of the CT-induced change in rheological properties was understood and clarified through relevant techniques (e.g., UV-Vis, fluorescence, and FT-IR spectroscopy and TEM). The findings in this work would provide a novel strategy to modulate the rheological properties of supramolecular gels for adaption to broader fields of real applications.
