Current Understanding of the Applications of Photocrosslinked Hydrogels in Biomedical Engineering

3D Bioprinting with Visible Light Cross-Linkable Mucin-Hyaluronic Acid Composite Bioink for Lung Tissue Engineering

3D printing can revolutionize personalized medicine by allowing cost-effective, customized tissue-engineering constructs. However, the limited availability and diversity of biopolymeric hydrogels restrict the variety and applications of bioinks. In this study, we introduce a composite bioink for 3D bioprinting, combining a photo-cross-linkable derivative of Mucin (Mu) called Methacrylated Mucin (MuMA) and Hyaluronic acid (HA). The less explored Mucin is responsible for the hydrogel nature of mucus and holds the potential to be used as a bioink material because of its plethora of features. HA, a crucial extracellular matrix component, is mucoadhesive and enhances ink viscosity and printability. Photo-cross-linking with 405 nm light stabilizes the printed scaffolds without damaging cells. Rheological tests reveal shear-thinning behavior, aiding cell protection during printing and improved MuMA bioink viscosity by adding HA. The printed structures exhibited porous behavior conducive to nutrient transport and cell migration. After 4 weeks in phosphate-buffered saline, the scaffolds retain 70% of their mass, highlighting stability. Biocompatibility tests with lung epithelial cells (L-132) confirm cell attachment and growth, suggesting suitability for lung tissue engineering. It is envisioned that the versatility of bioink could lead to significant advancements in lung tissue engineering and various other biomedical applications.

Measurement of covalent bond formation in light-curing hydrogels predicts physical stability under flow

Photocrosslinking hydrogels are promising for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, but challenges in reaction monitoring often leave their optimization subject to trial and error. The stability of crosslinked gels under fluid flow, as in the case of a microfluidic device, is particularly challenging to predict, both because of obstacles inherent to solid-state macromolecular analysis that prevent accurate chemical monitoring, and because stability is dependent on size of the patterned features. To solve both problems, we obtained 1H NMR spectra of cured hydrogels which were enzymatically degraded. This allowed us to take advantage of the high-resolution that solution NMR provides. This unique approach enabled the measurement of degree of crosslinking (DoC) and prediction of material stability under physiological fluid flow. We showed that NMR spectra of enzyme-digested gels successfully reported on DoC as a function of light exposure and wavelength within two classes of photocrosslinkable hydrogels: methacryloyl-modified gelatin and a composite of thiol-modified gelatin and norbornene-terminated polyethylene glycol. This approach revealed that a threshold DoC was required for patterned features in each material to become stable, and that smaller features required a higher DoC for stability. Finally, we demonstrated that DoC was predictive of the stability of architecturally complex features when photopatterning, underscoring the value of monitoring DoC when using light-reactive gels. We anticipate that the ability to quantify chemical crosslinks will accelerate the design of advanced hydrogel materials for structurally demanding applications such as photopatterning and bioprinting.

Art of Cross-Linking In Situ Bulk Perovskites for Efficient and Stable Photovoltaics

Perovskites are hybrid materials containing templating organic linkers and inorganic halides with efficiencies that have superseded the efficiency of silicon-based photovoltaic devices (PVs) in a very short period of 10 years. Nevertheless, low ambient stability due to traps and ion migration caused hysteresis to remain the bottlenecks on the way to achieving higher operational stability with bulk perovskite-based PVs. In this context, herein we highlight the prospects of in situ cross-linking of linkers within the perovskite lattice either mediated by thermal means or attained photochemically that can maneuver the ambient as well as operational stability for enhanced power conversion efficiency for PV applications or could improve the conductivity of this hybrid semiconductor. Additionally, some important studies of additive engineering via in situ cross-linking that can affect the structure of perovskite in addition to defect passivation to endow ambient environment stability are highlighted herein.

Developing hydrogels for gene therapy and tissue engineering

Hydrogels are a class of highly absorbent and easily modified polymer materials suitable for use as slow-release carriers for drugs. Gene therapy is highly specific and can overcome the limitations of traditional tissue engineering techniques and has significant advantages in tissue repair. However, therapeutic genes are often affected by cellular barriers and enzyme sensitivity, and carrier loading of therapeutic genes is essential. Therapeutic gene hydrogels can well overcome these difficulties. Moreover, gene-therapeutic hydrogels have made considerable progress. This review summarizes the recent research on carrier gene hydrogels for the treatment of tissue damage through a summary of the most current research frontiers. We initially introduce the classification of hydrogels and their cross-linking methods, followed by a detailed overview of the types and modifications of therapeutic genes, a detailed discussion on the loading of therapeutic genes in hydrogels and their characterization features, a summary of the design of hydrogels for therapeutic gene release, and an overview of their applications in tissue engineering. Finally, we provide comments and look forward to the shortcomings and future directions of hydrogels for gene therapy. We hope that this article will provide researchers in related fields with more comprehensive and systematic strategies for tissue engineering repair and further promote the development of the field of hydrogels for gene therapy.

Development of Biphasic Injectable Hydrogels for Meniscus Scaffold from Photocrosslinked Glycidyl Methacrylate-Modified Poly(Vinyl Alcohol)/Glycidyl Methacrylate-Modified Silk Fibroin

The development of a hydrogel material with a modified chemical structure of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and silk fibroin (SF) using glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) (denoted as PVA-g-GMA and SF-g-GMA) is an innovative approach in the field of biomaterials and meniscus tissue engineering in this study. The PVA-g-GMA/SF-g-GMA hydrogel was fabricated using different ratios of PVA-g-GMA to SF-g-GMA: 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, and 0/100 (w/w of dry substances), using lithium phenyl (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphinate (LAP) as a free radical photoinitiator, for 10 min at a low ultraviolet (UV) intensity (365 nm, 6 mW/cm2). The mechanical properties, morphology, pore size, and biodegradability of the PVA-g-GMA/SF-g-GMA hydrogel were investigated. Finally, for clinical application, human chondrocyte cell lines (HCPCs) were mixed into PVA-g-GMA/SF-g-GMA solutions and fabricated into hydrogel to study the viability of live and dead cells and gene expression. The results indicate that as the SF-g-GMA content increased, the compressive modulus of the PVA-g-GMA/SF-g-GMA hydrogel dropped from approximately 173 to 11 kPa. The degradation rates of PVA-g-GMA/SF-g-GMA 100/0, 75/25, and 50/50 reached up to 15.61%, 17.23%, and 18.93% in 4 months, respectively. In all PVA-g-GMA/SF-g-GMA conditions on day 7, chondrocyte cell vitality exceeded 80%. The PVA-g-GMA/SF-g-GMA 75:25 and 50:50 hydrogels hold promise as a biomimetic biphasic injectable hydrogel for encapsulated augmentation, offering advantages in terms of rapid photocurability, tunable mechanical properties, favorable biological responses, and controlled degradation.

Photo-cross-linked Hydrogels for Cartilage and Osteochondral Repair

Photo-cross-linked hydrogels, which respond to light and induce structural or morphological transitions, form a microenvironment that mimics the extracellular matrix of native tissue. In the last decades, photo-cross-linked hydrogels have been widely used in cartilage and osteochondral tissue engineering due to their good biocompatibility, ease of fabrication, rapid in situ gel-forming ability, and tunable mechanical and degradable properties. In this review, we systemically summarize the different types and physicochemical properties of photo-cross-linked hydrogels (including the materials and photoinitiators) and explore the biological properties modulated through the incorporation of additives, including cells, biomolecules, genes, and nanomaterials, into photo-cross-linked hydrogels. Subsequently, we compile the applications of photo-cross-linked hydrogels with a specific focus on cartilage and osteochondral repair. Finally, current limitations and future perspectives of photo-cross-linked hydrogels are also discussed.

In situ generated hemostatic adhesives: From mechanisms of action to recent advances and applications

Conventional surgical closure techniques, such as sutures, clips, or skin closure strips, may not always provide optimal wound closure and may require invasive procedures, which can result in potential post-surgical complications. As result, there is a growing demand for innovative solutions to achieve superior wound closure and improve patient outcomes. To overcome the abovementioned issues, in situ generated hemostatic adhesives/sealants have emerged as a promising alternative, offering a targeted, controllable, and minimally invasive procedure for a wide variety of medical applications. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms of action and recent advances of in situ generated hemostatic adhesives, particularly protein-based, thermoresponsive, bioinspired, and photocrosslinkable formulations, as well as the design challenges that must be addressed. Overall, this review aims to enhance a comprehensive understanding of the latest advancements of in situ generated hemostatic adhesives and their mechanisms of action, with the objective of promoting further research in this field.

Role of pH and Crosslinking Ions on Cell Viability and Metabolic Activity in Alginate-Gelatin 3D Prints

Alginate-gelatin hydrogels are extensively used in bioengineering. However, despite different formulations being used to grow different cell types in vitro, their pH and its effect, together with the crosslinking ions of these formulations, are still infrequently assessed. In this work, we study how these elements can affect hydrogel stability and printability and influence cell viability and metabolism on the resulting 3D prints. Our results show that both the buffer pH and crosslinking ion (Ca2+ or Ba2+) influence the swelling and degradation rates of prints. Moreover, buffer pH influenced the printability of hydrogel in the air but did not when printed directly in a fluid-phase CaCl2 or BaCl2 crosslinking bath. In addition, both U2OS and NIH/3T3 cells showed greater cell metabolic activity on one-layer prints crosslinked with Ca2+. In addition, Ba2+ increased the cell death of NIH/3T3 cells while having no effect on U2OS cell viability. The pH of the buffer also had an important impact on the cell behavior. U2OS cells showed a 2.25-fold cell metabolism increase on one-layer prints prepared at pH 8.0 in comparison to those prepared at pH 5.5, whereas NIH/3T3 cells showed greater metabolism on one-layer prints with pH 7.0. Finally, we observed a difference in the cell arrangement of U2OS cells growing on prints prepared from hydrogels with an acidic buffer in comparison to cells growing on those prepared using a neutral or basic buffer. These results show that both pH and the crosslinking ion influence hydrogel strength and cell behavior.

Exploring the Potential of Artificial Intelligence for Hydrogel Development-A Short Review

AI and ML have emerged as transformative tools in various scientific domains, including hydrogel design. This work explores the integration of AI and ML techniques in the realm of hydrogel development, highlighting their significance in enhancing the design, characterisation, and optimisation of hydrogels for diverse applications. We introduced the concept of AI train hydrogel design, underscoring its potential to decode intricate relationships between hydrogel compositions, structures, and properties from complex data sets. In this work, we outlined classical physical and chemical techniques in hydrogel design, setting the stage for AI/ML advancements. These methods provide a foundational understanding for the subsequent AI-driven innovations. Numerical and analytical methods empowered by AI/ML were also included. These computational tools enable predictive simulations of hydrogel behaviour under varying conditions, aiding in property customisation. We also emphasised AI's impact, elucidating its role in rapid material discovery, precise property predictions, and optimal design. ML techniques like neural networks and support vector machines that expedite pattern recognition and predictive modelling using vast datasets, advancing hydrogel formulation discovery are also presented. AI and ML's have a transformative influence on hydrogel design. AI and ML have revolutionised hydrogel design by expediting material discovery, optimising properties, reducing costs, and enabling precise customisation. These technologies have the potential to address pressing healthcare and biomedical challenges, offering innovative solutions for drug delivery, tissue engineering, wound healing, and more. By harmonising computational insights with classical techniques, researchers can unlock unprecedented hydrogel potentials, tailoring solutions for diverse applications.

Protein-Based Hydrogels and Their Biomedical Applications

Hydrogels made from proteins are attractive materials for diverse medical applications, as they are biocompatible, biodegradable, and amenable to chemical and biological modifications. Recent advances in protein engineering, synthetic biology, and material science have enabled the fine-tuning of protein sequences, hydrogel structures, and hydrogel mechanical properties, allowing for a broad range of biomedical applications using protein hydrogels. This article reviews recent progresses on protein hydrogels with special focus on those made of microbially produced proteins. We discuss different hydrogel formation strategies and their associated hydrogel properties. We also review various biomedical applications, categorized by the origin of protein sequences. Lastly, current challenges and future opportunities in engineering protein-based hydrogels are discussed. We hope this review will inspire new ideas in material innovation, leading to advanced protein hydrogels with desirable properties for a wide range of biomedical applications.

Microneedle-Integrated Sensors for Extraction of Skin Interstitial Fluid and Metabolic Analysis

Skin interstitial fluid (ISF) has emerged as a fungible biofluid sample for blood serum and plasma for disease diagnosis and therapy. The sampling of skin ISF is highly desirable considering its easy accessibility, no damage to blood vessels, and reduced risk of infection. Particularly, skin ISF can be sampled using microneedle (MN)-based platforms in the skin tissues, which exhibit multiple advantages including minimal invasion of the skin tissues, less pain, ease of carrying, capacity for continuous monitoring, etc. In this review, we focus on the current development of microneedle-integrated transdermal sensors for collecting ISF and detecting specific disease biomarkers. Firstly, we discussed and classified microneedles according to their structural design, including solid MNs, hollow MNs, porous MNs, and coated MNs. Subsequently, we elaborate on the construction of MN-integrated sensors for metabolic analysis with highlights on the electrochemical, fluorescent, chemical chromogenic, immunodiagnostic, and molecular diagnostic MN-integrated sensors. Finally, we discuss the current challenges and future direction for developing MN-based platforms for ISF extraction and sensing applications.

Application of polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan copolymer hydrogels in biomedicine: A review

Hydrogels is a hydrophilic, cross-linked polymer of three-dimensional network structures. The application of hydrogels prepared from a single polymer in the biomedical field has many drawbacks. The functional blend of polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan allows hydrogels to have better and more desirable properties than those produced from a single polymer, which is a good biomaterial for development and design. In this paper, we have reviewed the progress in the application of polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan composite hydrogels in various medical fields, the different cross-linking agents and cross-linking methods, and the research progress in the optimization of composite hydrogels for their subsequent wide range of biomedical applications.

Additive Manufacturing and Physicomechanical Characteristics of PEGDA Hydrogels: Recent Advances and Perspective for Tissue Engineering

In this brief review, we discuss the recent advancements in using poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogels for tissue engineering applications. PEGDA hydrogels are highly attractive in biomedical and biotechnology fields due to their soft and hydrated properties that can replicate living tissues. These hydrogels can be manipulated using light, heat, and cross-linkers to achieve desirable functionalities. Unlike previous reviews that focused solely on material design and fabrication of bioactive hydrogels and their cell viability and interactions with the extracellular matrix (ECM), we compare the traditional bulk photo-crosslinking method with the latest three-dimensional (3D) printing of PEGDA hydrogels. We present detailed evidence combining the physical, chemical, bulk, and localized mechanical characteristics, including their composition, fabrication methods, experimental conditions, and reported mechanical properties of bulk and 3D printed PEGDA hydrogels. Furthermore, we highlight the current state of biomedical applications of 3D PEGDA hydrogels in tissue engineering and organ-on-chip devices over the last 20 years. Finally, we delve into the current obstacles and future possibilities in the field of engineering 3D layer-by-layer (LbL) PEGDA hydrogels for tissue engineering and organ-on-chip devices.

Composite Hydrogel Conduit Incorporated with Platelet-Rich Plasma Improved the Regenerative Microenvironment for Peripheral Nerve Repair

Peripheral nerve regeneration and functional recovery remain major challenges in clinical practice. Nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) which can regulate the regenerative microenvironment are beneficial for peripheral nerve repair. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can secrete multiple growth factors to regulate the regenerative microenvironment. However, current administration methods of PRP are rapidly activated followed by the burst release of growth factors, causing low therapeutic efficiency in vivo. To overcome these disadvantages, a composite nerve conduit was fabricated by incorporating PRP into a gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) and sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel. The GelMA/SA-3/PRP-20 NGCs possess optimal mechanical properties, degradation rate, and superior biological performance. Importantly, GelMA/SA-3/PRP-20 NGCs achieved the sustained release of two major growth factors (VEGF-A, PDGF-BB) from PRP. Moreover, the GelMA/SA-3/PRP-20 NGCs significantly promoted the migration of Schwann cells and the neovascularization of endothelial cells in vitro. While bridging 10 mm rat sciatic nerve defects, the GelMA/SA-3/PRP-20 NGCs promoted axonal regeneration and functional recovery of peripheral nerves. Therefore, the GelMA/SA-3/PRP-20 NGCs could regulate the regenerative microenvironment by sustained release of growth factors from PRP and shed new light on the clinical application of PRP in peripheral nerve repair.

Photocrosslinkable natural polymers in tissue engineering

Natural polymers have been widely used in scaffolds for tissue engineering due to their superior biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low cytotoxicity compared to synthetic polymers. Despite these advantages, there remain drawbacks such as unsatisfying mechanical properties or low processability, which hinder natural tissue substitution. Several non-covalent or covalent crosslinking methods induced by chemicals, temperatures, pH, or light sources have been suggested to overcome these limitations. Among them, light-assisted crosslinking has been considered as a promising strategy for fabricating microstructures of scaffolds. This is due to the merits of non-invasiveness, relatively high crosslinking efficiency via light penetration, and easily controllable parameters, including light intensity or exposure time. This review focuses on photo-reactive moieties and their reaction mechanisms, which are widely exploited along with natural polymer and its tissue engineering applications.

Fabrication of Silk Hydrogel Scaffolds with Aligned Porous Structures and Tunable Mechanical Properties

The effectiveness of cell culture and tissue regeneration largely depends on the structural and physiochemical characteristics of tissue-engineering scaffolds. Hydrogels are frequently employed in tissue engineering because of their high-water content and strong biocompatibility, making them the ideal scaffold materials for simulating tissue structures and properties. However, hydrogels created using traditional methods have low mechanical strength and a non-porous structure, which severely restrict their application. Herein, we successfully developed silk fibroin glycidyl methacrylate (SF-GMA) hydrogels with oriented porous structures and substantial toughness through directional freezing (DF) and in situ photo-crosslinking (DF-SF-GMA). The oriented porous structures in the DF-SF-GMA hydrogels were induced by directional ice templates and maintained after photo-crosslinking. The mechanical properties, particularly the toughness, of these scaffolds were enhanced compared to the traditional bulk hydrogels. Interestingly, the DF-SF-GMA hydrogels exhibit fast stress relaxation and variable viscoelasticity. The remarkable biocompatibility of the DF-SF-GMA hydrogels was further demonstrated in cell culture. Accordingly, this work reports a method to prepare tough SF hydrogels with aligned porous structures, which can be extensively applied to cell culture and tissue engineering.

Current state of knowledge on intelligent-response biological and other macromolecular hydrogels in biomedical engineering: A review

Because intelligent hydrogels have good biocompatibility, a rapid response, and good degradability as well as a stimulus response mode that is rich, hydrophilic, and similar to the softness and elasticity of living tissue, they have received widespread attention and are widely used in biomedical engineering. In this article, we conduct a systematic review of the use of smart hydrogels in biomedical engineering. First, we introduce the properties and applications of hydrogels and compare the similarities and differences between traditional hydrogels and smart hydrogels. Secondly, we summarize the intelligent hydrogel types, the mechanisms of action used by different hydrogels, and the materials for preparing different types of hydrogels, such as the materials for the preparation of temperature-responsive hydrogels, which mainly include gelatin, carrageenan, agarose, amylose, etc.; summarize the morphologies of different hydrogels, such as films, fibers and microspheres; and summarize the application of smart hydrogels in biomedical engineering, such as for the delivery of proteins, antibiotics, deoxyribonucleic acid, etc. Finally, we summarize the shortcomings of current research and present future prospects for smart hydrogels. The purpose of this paper is to provide researchers engaged in related fields with a systematic review of the application of intelligent hydrogels in biomedical engineering. We hope that they will get some inspiration from this work to provide new directions for the development of related fields.

Emerging 3D bioprinting applications in plastic surgery

Plastic surgery is a discipline that uses surgical methods or tissue transplantation to repair, reconstruct and beautify the defects and deformities of human tissues and organs. Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has gained widespread attention because it enables fine customization of the implants in the patient's surgical area preoperatively while avoiding some of the adverse reactions and complications of traditional surgical approaches. In this paper, we review the recent research advances in the application of 3D bioprinting in plastic surgery. We first introduce the printing process and basic principles of 3D bioprinting technology, revealing the advantages and disadvantages of different bioprinting technologies. Then, we describe the currently available bioprinting materials, and dissect the rationale for special dynamic 3D bioprinting (4D bioprinting) that is achieved by varying the combination strategy of bioprinting materials. Later, we focus on the viable clinical applications and effects of 3D bioprinting in plastic surgery. Finally, we summarize and discuss the challenges and prospects for the application of 3D bioprinting in plastic surgery. We believe that this review can contribute to further development of 3D bioprinting in plastic surgery and provide lessons for related research.

Self-Healing Supramolecular Hydrogels with Antibacterial Abilities for Wound Healing

Wound healing due to skin defects is a growing clinical concern. Especially when infection occurs, it not only leads to impair healing of the wound but even leads to the occurrence of death. In this study, a self-healing supramolecular hydrogel with antibacterial abilities was developed for wound healing. The supramolecular hydrogels inherited excellent self-healing and mechanical properties are produced by the polymerization of N-acryloyl glycinamide monomers which carries a lot of amides. In addition, excellent antibacterial properties are obtained by integrating silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) into the hydrogels. The resultant hydrogel has a demonstrated ability in superior mechanical properties, including stretchability and self-healing. Also, the good biocompatibility and antibacterial ability have been proven in hydrogels. Besides, the prepared hydrogels were employed as wound dressings to treat skin wounds of animals. It was found that the hydrogels could significantly promote wound repair, including relieving inflammation, promoting collagen deposition, and enhancing angiogenesis. Therefore, such self-healing supramolecular hydrogels with composite functional nanomaterials are expected to be used as new wound dressings in the field of healthcare.

Progress in the application of sustained-release drug microspheres in tissue engineering

Sustained-release drug-loaded microspheres provide a long-acting sustained release, with targeted and other effects. There are many types of sustained-release drug microspheres and various preparation methods, and they are easy to operate. For these reasons, they have attracted widespread interest and are widely used in tissue engineering and other fields. In this paper, we provide a systematic review of the application of sustained-release drug microspheres in tissue engineering. First, we introduce this new type of drug delivery system (sustained-release drug carriers), describe the types of sustained-release drug microspheres, and summarize the characteristics of different microspheres. Second, we summarize the preparation methods of sustained-release drug microspheres and summarize the materials required for preparing microspheres. Third, various applications of sustained-release drug microspheres in tissue engineering are summarized. Finally, we summarize the shortcomings and discuss future prospects in the development of sustained-release drug microspheres. The purpose of this paper was to provide a further systematic understanding of the application of sustained-release drug microspheres in tissue engineering for the personnel engaged in related fields and to provide inspiration and new ideas for studies in related fields.

Multifunctional Silk Fibroin Methacryloyl Microneedle for Diabetic Wound Healing

Diabetic wound is one of the common complications in diabetic patients, which exhibits chronic, hard-to-heal characteristics. The healing process of wounds is impaired by several factors, including excessive oxidative stress, blocked angiogenesis, and bacterial infection. The therapeutic effects of traditional microneedle patches remain not satisfactory, due to their difficulty simultaneously targeting multiple targets to treat diabetic wounds. As such, there is an urgent need to develop a multifunctional microneedle (MN) patch for promoting the healing of diabetic wounds. A multifunctional MN patch with antioxidant, proangiogenesis, and antibacterial capacities was fabricated to target the pathogenesis of diabetic wounds. Silk fibroin methacryloyl, which has excellent biocompatibility, stable mechanical properties, and well processability, and is selected as the base material for multifunctional MN patches. Prussian blue nanozymes (PBNs) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are encapsulated in tips of MN patches, Polymyxin is encapsulated in base layers of MN patches. Based on synergic properties of these components, multifunctional MN patches exhibit excellent biocompatibility, drug-sustained release, proangiogenesis, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. The developed multifunctional MN patches accelerate diabetic wound healing, providing a potential therapeutic approach.

In recent years, 3D printing has gradually become a well-known new topic and a research hotspot. At the same time, the advent of 3D printing is inseparable from the preparation of bio-ink. Natural materials have the advantages of low toxicity or even non-toxicity, there being abundant raw materials, easy processing and modification, excellent mechanical properties, good biocompatibility, and high cell activity, making them very suitable for the preparation of bio-ink. With the help of 3D printing technology, the prepared materials and scaffolds can be widely used in tissue engineering and other fields. Firstly, we introduce the natural materials and their properties for 3D printing and summarize the physical and chemical properties of these natural materials and their applications in tissue engineering after modification. Secondly, we discuss the modification methods used for 3D printing materials, including physical, chemical, and protein self-assembly methods. We also discuss the method of 3D printing. Then, we summarize the application of natural materials for 3D printing in tissue engineering, skin tissue, cartilage tissue, bone tissue, and vascular tissue. Finally, we also express some views on the research and application of these natural materials.

The Effect of Crosslinking Degree of Hydrogels on Hydrogel Adhesion

The development of adhesive hydrogel materials has brought numerous advances to biomedical engineering. Hydrogel adhesion has drawn much attention in research and applications. In this paper, the study of hydrogel adhesion is no longer limited to the surface of hydrogels. Here, the effect of the internal crosslinking degree of hydrogels prepared by different methods on hydrogel adhesion was explored to find the generality. The results show that with the increase in crosslinking degree, the hydrogel adhesion decreased significantly due to the limitation of segment mobility. Moreover, two simple strategies to improve hydrogel adhesion generated by hydrogen bonding were proposed. One was to keep the functional groups used for hydrogel adhesion and the other was to enhance the flexibility of polymer chains that make up hydrogels. We hope this study can provide another approach for improving the hydrogel adhesion generated by hydrogen bonding.

Research Progress on Emerging Polysaccharide Materials Applied in Tissue Engineering

The development and application of polysaccharide materials are popular areas of research. Emerging polysaccharide materials have been widely used in tissue engineering fields such as in skin trauma, bone defects, cartilage repair and arthritis due to their stability, good biocompatibility and reproducibility. This paper reviewed the recent progress of the application of polysaccharide materials in tissue engineering. Firstly, we introduced polysaccharide materials and their derivatives and summarized the physicochemical properties of polysaccharide materials and their application in tissue engineering after modification. Secondly, we introduced the processing methods of polysaccharide materials, including the processing of polysaccharides into amorphous hydrogels, microspheres and membranes. Then, we summarized the application of polysaccharide materials in tissue engineering. Finally, some views on the research and application of polysaccharide materials are presented. The purpose of this review was to summarize the current research progress on polysaccharide materials with special attention paid to the application of polysaccharide materials in tissue engineering.

Characterization and Optimization of Real-Time Photoresponsive Gelatin for Direct Laser Writing

There is an abundance of plastic materials used in the widest range of applications, such as packaging, machine parts, biomedical devices and components, etc. However, most materials used today are non-decomposable in the environment, producing a huge burden on ecosystems. The search for better, safer alternatives is still on. Here we present a detailed analysis of a simple, cheap, non-toxic, even edible, eco-friendly material, which can be easily manufactured, laser patterned and used for the fabrication of complex structures. The base substance is gelatin which is made photoresponsive by adding plasticizers and sensitizers. The resulting films were analyzed with respect to their optical, thermal and mechanical properties, which can be modified by a slight variation of chemical composition. The material is optimized for rapid laser-manufacturing of elastic microstructures (lenses, gratings, cantilevers, etc.) without any waste or residues. Overall, the material properties were tailored to increase photothermal responsivity, improve the surface quality and achieve material homogeneity, transparency and long-term stability (as verified using electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry).
