Robust Silica–Agarose Composite Aerogels with Interpenetrating Network Structure by In Situ Sol–Gel Process

Woven Agarose-Cellulose Composite Aerogel Fibers with Outstanding Radial Elasticity for Personal Thermal Management

Aerogel fibers are good thermal insulators, suitable for weaving, and show potential as the next generation of intelligent textiles that can effectively reduce heat consumption for personal thermal management. However, the production of continuous aerogel fibers from biomass with sufficient strength and radial elasticity remains a significant challenge. Herein, continuous gel fibers were produced via wet spinning using agarose (AG) as the matrix, 2,2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNs) as the reinforcing agent, and no other chemical additives by utilizing the gelling properties of AG. Supercritical drying and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) were then used to produce hydrophobic AG-TOCN aerogel fibers (HATAFs). During CVD, the HATAF gel skeleton was covered with an isostructural silica coating. Consequently, the HATAFs can recover from radial compression under 60% strain. Moreover, the HATAFs have low densities (≤0.14 g cm-3), high porosities (≥91.8%), high specific surface areas (≥188 m2 g-1), moderate tensile strengths (≤1.75 MPa), excellent hydrophobicity (water contact angles of >130°), and good thermal insulating properties at different temperatures. Thus, HATAFs are expected to become a new generation of materials for efficient personal thermal management.

Agarose fibers with glycerol and graphene oxide and functional properties for potential application in biomaterials

Agarose has numerous applications in biochemistry and medical textiles. This study aimed to produce agarose-graphene oxide-glycerol fibers and analyze their properties. The agarose gel was prepared by dissolving the polymer in 9:1 (v/v) dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO): H2O, followed by spinning in an ethanol bath (1:1 (v/v) ethanol: H2O) at 20 °C. Fibers were obtained using 8 % (m/v) agarose, 2 % (m/v) glycerol, and 0.5 % and 1 % (m/v) graphene oxide (GO). The fibers had a titer of 18.32-32.49 tex and, a tenacity of 1.40-3.35 cN/tex. GO increased the thermal resistance by 79 %. The presence of glycerol and GO was confirmed and analyzed by FTIR and XPS. Fiber water absorption was decreased by 30 % with the GO addition. The weight loss increased by 55 % after glycerol addition, 51 % with GO addition, and 36 % with glycerol and GO simultaneous addition. Furthermore, GO exhibited 100 % inhibition for both S. aureus (gram-positive) and E. coli bacteria (gram-negative). Fiber F1, with only agarose, inhibited S. aureus by 34.93 %, F2 with 2 % glycerol by 48.72 %, F3 with 0.5 % GO by 63.42 %, and F4 with 2 % glycerol and 0.5 % GO by 30.65 %. However, the inhibition increased to 49.43 % with 1 % GO. The agarose fibers showed low inhibition for E. coli, ranging from 3.35 to 12.12 %.

High-Performance Methylsilsesquioxane Aerogels: Hydrolysis Mechanisms and Maximizing Compression Properties

Synthesis of methylsilsesquioxane aerogels by ambient pressure drying instead of supercritical drying has recently emerged as a major trend, but the issues of low mechanical strength and unstable performance still need to be resolved. This work reveals the microscopic formation mechanisms of gel skeleton based on the kinetic characteristics of methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) precursor hydrolysis and the associated sol-gel reactions. The effects of oxalic acid concentration (cOA) and hydrolysis time of MTMS solution (th) on the gelation time, morphologies, microstructures, chemical structure, and compression properties of the as-synthesized methylsilsesquioxane aerogels are investigated. The optimal cOA and th are 38.4 mmol/L and 120 min, respectively, endowing the methylsilsesquioxane aerogels with a compression strength of 0.170 MPa and a maximum compression strain of 61.2%. Precise control of the hydrolysis conditions ensures the formation of branched particle-to-particle networks, which is crucial for maximizing the compression properties of methylsilsesquioxane aerogels synthesized under industry-relevant conditions.

Bacteria-Polymer Composite Material for Glycerol Valorization

Bacterial immobilization is regarded as an enabling technology to improve the stability and reusability of biocatalysts. Natural polymers are often used as immobilization matrices but present certain drawbacks, such as biocatalyst leakage and loss of physical integrity upon utilization in bioprocesses. Herein, we prepared a hybrid polymeric matrix that included silica nanoparticles for the unprecedented immobilization of the industrially relevant Gluconobacter frateurii (Gfr). This biocatalyst can valorize glycerol, an abundant by-product of the biodiesel industry, into glyceric acid (GA) and dihydroxyacetone (DHA). Different concentrations of siliceous nanosized materials, such as biomimetic Si nanoparticles (SiNps) and montmorillonite (MT), were added to alginate. These hybrid materials were significantly more resistant by texture analysis and presented a more compact structure as seen by scanning electron microscopy. The preparation including 4% alginate with 4% SiNps proved to be the most resistant material, with a homogeneous distribution of the biocatalyst in the beads as seen by confocal microscopy using a fluorescent mutant of Gfr. It produced the highest amounts of GA and DHA and could be reused for up to eight consecutive 24 h reactions with no loss of physical integrity and negligible bacterial leakage. Overall, our results indicate a new approach to generating biocatalysts using hybrid biopolymer supports.

The Role of the Sol-Gel Synthesis Process in the Biomedical Field and Its Use to Enhance the Performance of Bioabsorbable Magnesium Implants

In the present day, the increment in life expectancy has led to the necessity of developing new biomaterials for the restoration or substitution of damaged organs that have lost their functionalities. Among all the research about biomaterials, this review paper aimed to expose the main possibilities that the sol-gel synthesis method can provide for the fabrication of materials with interest in the biomedical field, more specifically, when this synthesis method is used to improve the biological properties of different magnesium alloys used as biomaterials. The sol-gel method has been widely studied and used to generate ceramic materials for a wide range of purposes during the last fifty years. Focused on biomedical research, the sol-gel synthesis method allows the generation of different kinds of biomaterials with diverse morphologies and a high potential for the biocompatibility improvement of a wide range of materials commonly used in the biomedical field such as metallic implants, as well as for the generation of drug delivery systems or interesting biomaterials for new tissue engineering therapies.
