Performance of Dye Removal from Single and Binary Component Systems by Adsorption on Composite Hydrogel Beads Derived from Fruits Wastes Entrapped in Natural Polymeric Matrix

Competitive Langmuir Model for Dye Mixture Adsorption: Disagreement between Theoretical Ground and Application Condition

Precise prediction of adsorption in a multicomponent system is vital for successful design of dye-contaminated industrial wastewater treatment processes. The present work looks for the reason behind the failure of the competitive Langmuir model (CLM) to describe adsorption in such systems, while the Langmuir model (LM) successfully describes the process for a single dye solution. With that end, derivations of LM and CLM have been revisited, and a criterion for the universality of active sites has been defined. Attempts have been made to describe the competitive adsorption based on the LM parameters determined from single dye solutions. Three dyes (safranin, crystal violet, and methylene blue) and two adsorbents [activated carbon (AC) and coconut fiber (CF)] are subjected to adsorption and BET tests. AC complies with the universality criterion, while CF does not. The active site density estimated from dye adsorption is 14-18 folds lower for AC and 18-38 folds higher for CF, than those done from the BET test. The CLM predicts the equilibrium adsorption density of both adsorbents in binary dye systems satisfactorily, but there is a large gap between the predicted and experimental values of equilibrium concentration. It is argued that in liquid systems, adsorption occurs through different types of interactions, and hence the adsorption process even for a single dye should not be presented by a single KL value (as is formulated in LM), rather with multiple KL values corresponding to the interaction types. These KL values will classify the active sites as universal and specific in a multicomponent system, and then the CLM will predict competitive adsorption better, which will make the adsorption process design more precise.

Dye Sorption from Mixtures on Chitosan Sorbents

This article presents studies on the sorption of the anionic dyes Reactive Black 5 (RB5) and Reactive Yellow 84 (RY84) from solutions of single dyes and from dye mixtures onto three chitosan sorbents-chitin, chitosan DD75% and chitosan DD95%. In this work, the influence of pH on sorption efficiency, the sorption equilibrium time for the tested anionic dyes and the sorption capacity in relation to the individual dyes and their mixtures were determined. It has been found that the sorption process for both dyes was most effective at pH 3 for chitin and chitosan DD75 and at pH 4 for chitosan DD95%. The obtained results were described by the double Langmuir equation (Langmuir 2). The obtained constants made it possible to determine the affinity of the tested dyes for the three sorbents and the sorption capacity of the sorbents. For RB5, the highest sorption capacity for chitosan DD95% was achieved with sorption from a single solution-of 742 mg/g DM and with sorption from mixed dyes-of 528 mg/g DM. For RY84, the highest efficiency was also achieved for chitosan DD95% and was 760 mg/g DM for a single dye solution and 437 mg/g DM for a mixture of dyes.

Selective adsorption of single and binary dyestuffs by citrus peel: Characterization, and adsorption performance

The powdered citrus peel, which has been replaced with sodium hydroxide, was used in this study to test how well methylene blue and reactive black 5 dyestuff absorbed one or both. To find out about the texture and surface chemistry of modified citrus peel, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope analyses were carried out. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy data revealed the presence of amphoteric radicals on the modified citrus peel surface, indicating the effective adsorption of methylene blue and reactive black 5. Many parameters affecting the batch adsorption process, such as modified citrus peel dose (0.1-0.5 g), pH (2-10), time (20-80 min), stirring speed (60-180 rpm), and temperature (20-45 °C), were studied. It is seen that the physical effect is at the forefront, homogeneous monolayer adsorption occurs, and the process fits the Langmuir and pseudo first order models for dyestuffs. Thermodynamic modeling showed that the adsorption of methylene blue and reactive black 5 was spontaneous and endothermic. At pH 2, an adsorption capacity of 0.67 mg/g and a removal efficiency of 66.86% were achieved for reactive black 5. For methylene blue at pH 6, the adsorption capacity was 4.34 mg/g, and the decolorization rate was 87%. The decreases in the removal rates of dyestuffs in the binary system indicate that they are affected by their simultaneous presence in the solution. The results proved that modified citrus peel can be useful for dyestuff removal in single or binary systems, although the removal capacity of modified citrus peel is highly dependent on methylene blue and reactive black 5.

Exploration of Reactive Black 5 Dye Desorption from Composite Hydrogel Beads—Adsorbent Reusability, Kinetic and Equilibrium Isotherms

A low-cost adsorbent was prepared by using cherry stones powder and chitosan and used to retain Reactive Black 5 dye from aqueous solution. Then, the spent material was submitted to a regeneration process. Five different eluents (water, sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride and ethanol) were tested. Among them, sodium hydroxide was selected for an advanced investigation. Values of three working conditions, namely the eluent volume, its concentration and the desorption temperature, were optimized by Response Surface Methodology-Box–Behnken Design. In the established settings (NaOH volume: 30 mL, NaOH concentration: 1.5 M, working temperature: 40 °C), three successive cycles of adsorption/desorption were conducted. The analysis performed by Scanning Electron Microscopy and by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy revealed the evolution of the adsorbent throughout the dye elution from the material. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich equilibrium isotherm were able to accurately describe the desorption process. Based on the acquired results, our outcomes sustain the suitability of the synthesized material as dye adsorbent and the possibility of efficaciously recycling and reusing it.

Durian Waste Husks as an Adsorbent in Improving Soaking Water during the Retting Process of Piper nigrum L. (Pepper Berries)

The potential of raw durian husk and NaOH-modified durian husk as an adsorbent, using different doses, 0.5 g, 1.0 g, 1.5 g, and 2.0 g, is investigated to improve soaking water of pepper berries during the retting process. The surface area and the pore size of the durian husk were examined using Brunner Emmett and Teller analysis. The surface area of NaOH-modified durian husk is higher (2.33 m2/g) compared to the raw durian husk (1.51 m2/g). NaOH-modified durian husk has a higher porous structure than the raw durian husk, but both pore diameters are more than 50 nm, which is considered micropore raw material. The effect of the raw durian husk on pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO), and turbidity were compared to the NaOH-modified durian husk with different doses. The 2.0 g of NaOH-modified durian husk enhanced changes in the four parameters. The highest pH value using NaOH-modified durian husk was 6.10 ± 0.02, while turbidity and COD increased to 971.33 ± 1.15 NTU and 1984.67 ± 3.21 mg/L, respectively. The DO of NaOH-modified durian husk shows the lowest reduction to 1.49 mg/L with 2.0 g of NaOH-modified durian husk. The experimental data was best fitted with a first-order kinetic model. Durian husk treated with NaOH could be used as a potential adsorbent to enhance the soaking water for pepper berries.
