Review on Hydrogel-Based Flexible Supercapacitors for Wearable Applications

Enhancing Supercapacitor Electrochemical Performance with 3D Printed Cellular PEEK/MWCNT Electrodes Coated with PEDOT: PSS

In this study, we examine the electrochemical performance of supercapacitor (SC) electrodes made from 3D-printed nanocomposites. These composites consist of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polyether ether ketone (PEEK), coated with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). The electrochemical performance of a 3D-printed PEEK/MWCNT solid electrode with a surface area density of 1.2 mm-1 is compared to two distinct periodically porous PEEK/MWCNT electrodes with surface area densities of 7.3 and 7.1 mm-1. To enhance SC performance, the 3D-printed electrodes are coated with a conductive polymer, PEDOT:PSS. The architected cellular electrodes exhibit significantly improved capacitive properties, with the cellular electrode (7.1 mm-1) displaying a capacitance nearly four times greater than that of the solid 3D-printed electrode-based SCs. Moreover, the PEDOT:PSS-coated cellular electrode (7.1 mm-1) demonstrates a high specific capacitance of 12.55 mF·cm-3 at 50 mV·s-1, contrasting to SCs based on 3D-printed cellular electrodes (4.09 mF·cm-3 at 50 mV·s-1) without the coating. The conductive PEDOT:PSS coating proves effective in reducing surface resistance, resulting in a decreased voltage drop during the SCs' charging and discharging processes. Ultimately, the 3D-printed cellular nanocomposite electrode with the conductive polymer coating achieves an energy density of 1.98 μW h·cm-3 at a current of 70 μA. This study underscores how the combined effect of the surface area density of porous electrodes enabled by 3D printing, along with the conductivity imparted by the polymer coating, synergistically improves the energy storage performance.

Self-adhesive, conductive, and multifunctional hybrid hydrogel for flexible/wearable electronics based on triboelectric and piezoresistive sensor

Flexible electronics are highly developed nowadays in human-machine interfaces (HMI). However, challenges such as lack of flexibility, conductivity, and versatility always greatly hindered flexible electronics applications. In this work, a multifunctional hybrid hydrogel (H-hydrogel) was prepared by combining two kinds of 1D polymer chains (polyacrylamide and polydopamine) and two kinds of 2D nanosheets (Ti3C2Tx MXene and graphene oxide nanosheets) as quadruple crosslinkers. The introduced Ti3C2Tx MXene and graphene oxide nanosheets are bonded with the PAM and PDA polymer chains by hydrogen bonds. This unique crosslinking and stable structure endow the H-hydrogel with advantages such as good flexibility, electrical conductivity, self-adhesion, and mechanical robustness. The two kinds of nanosheets not only improved the mechanical strength and conductivity of the H-hydrogel, but also helped to form the double electric layers (DELs) between the nanosheets and the bulk-free water phase inside the H-hydrogel. When utilized as the electrode of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), high electrical output performances were realized due to the dynamic balance of the DELs between the nanosheets and the H-hydrogel's inside water molecules. Moreover, flexible sensors, including triboelectric, and strain/pressure sensors, were achieved for human motion detection at low frequencies. This hydrogel is promising for HMI and e-skin.

Mechanically Tough and Conductive Hydrogels Based on Gelatin and Z-Gln-Gly Generated by Microbial Transglutaminase

Gelatin-based hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties and conductivities are desirable, but their fabrication is challenging. In this work, an innovative approach for the preparation of gelatin-based conductive hydrogels is presented that improves the mechanical and conductive properties of hydrogels by integrating Z-Gln-Gly into gelatin polymers via enzymatic crosslinking. In these hydrogels (Gel-TG-ZQG), dynamic π-π stacking interactions are created by the introduction of carbobenzoxy groups, which can increase the elasticity and toughness of the hydrogel and improve the conductivity sensitivity by forming effective electronic pathways. Moreover, the mechanical properties and conductivity of the obtained hydrogel can be controlled by tuning the molar ratio of Z-Gln-Gly to the primary amino groups in gelatin. The hydrogel with the optimal mechanical properties (Gel-TG-ZQG (0.25)) exhibits a high storage modulus, compressive strength, tensile strength, and elongation at break of 7.8 MPa at 10 °C, 0.15 MPa at 80% strain, 0.343 MPa, and 218.30%, respectively. The obtained Gel-TG-ZQG (0.25) strain sensor exhibits a short response/recovery time (260.37 ms/130.02 ms) and high sensitivity (0.138 kPa-1) in small pressure ranges (0-2.3 kPa). The Gel-TG-ZQG (0.25) hydrogel-based sensors can detect full-range human activities, such as swallowing, fist clenching, knee bending and finger pressing, with high sensitivity and stability, yielding highly reproducible and repeatable sensor responses. Additionally, the Gel-TG-ZQG hydrogels are noncytotoxic. All the results demonstrate that the Gel-TG-ZQG hydrogel has potential as a biosensor for wearable devices and health-monitoring systems.

Stretchable Magneto-Mechanical Configurations with High Magnetic Sensitivity Based on "Gel-Type" Soft Rubber for Intelligent Applications

"Gel-type" soft and stretchable magneto-mechanical composites made of silicone rubber and iron particles are in focus because of their high magnetic sensitivity, and intelligence perspective. The "intelligence" mentioned here is related to the "smartness" of these magneto-rheological elastomers (MREs) to tune the "mechanical stiffness" and "output voltage" in energy-harvesting applications by switching magnetic fields. Hence, this work develops "gel-type" soft composites based on rubber reinforced with iron particles in a hybrid with piezoelectric fillers such as barium titanate. A further aspect of the work relies on studying the mechanical stability of intelligence and the stretchability of the composites. For example, the stretchability was 105% (control), and higher for 158% (60 per 100 parts of rubber (phr) of barium titanate, BaTiO3), 149% (60 phr of electrolyte iron particles, EIP), and 148% (60 phr of BaTiO3 + EIP hybrid). Then, the magneto-mechanical aspect will be investigated to explore the magnetic sensitivity of these "gel-type" soft composites with a change in mechanical stiffness under a magnetic field. For example, the anisotropic effect was 14.3% (60 phr of EIP), and 4.4% (60 phr of hybrid). Finally, energy harvesting was performed. For example, the isotropic samples exhibit ~20 mV (60 phr of BaTiO3), ~5.4 mV (60 phr of EIP), and ~3.7 mV (60 phr of hybrid). However, the anisotropic samples exhibit ~5.6 mV (60 phr of EIP), and ~8.8 mV (60 phr of hybrid). In the end, the composites prepared have three configurations, namely one with electro-mechanical aspects, another with magnetic sensitivity, and a third with both features. Overall, the experimental outcomes will make fabricated composites useful for different intelligent and stretchable applications.

Highly Electroactive Frozen-State Polymerized Polypyrrole Nanostructures for Flexible Supercapacitors

The polymerization of pyrrole in the frozen state with the presence of organic dyes (methyl orange (MO) and Acid Blue 25 (AB)) has proven to produce polypyrrole (PPy) nanostructures. Herein, we explore the electrochemical properties of PPy prepared under frozen-state conditions (-24 °C) with and without the presence of organic dyes. The electroactivity of PPy prepared with MO and AB significantly increased in all electrolytic media with a capacitance higher than this of the PPy prepared at room temperature. The highest capacitance (1914 F g-1) was obtained for PPy-MO in 0.2 M HCl solution. The impedance spectra of PPy showed a decrease in charge transfer resistance when the dyes were present. This indicates a conductivity increase of PPy. Improved electrochemical stability was observed for PPy, PPy-MO, and PPy-AB prepared at -24 °C, wherein a steady gain of capacitance was maintained during 5000 potential cycling. In addition, a PPy-based supercapacitor device was fabricated to demonstrate the energy storage characteristics of PPy, where it showed good capacitive behavior and stability. Overall, frozen-state polymerized PPy posed an impressive capacitive performance for flexible supercapacitors.

Recent Progress in Self-Healable Hydrogel-Based Electroluminescent Devices: A Comprehensive Review

Flexible electronics have gained significant research attention in recent years due to their potential applications as smart and functional materials. Typically, electroluminescence devices produced by hydrogel-based materials are among the most notable flexible electronics. With their excellent flexibility and their remarkable electrical, adaptable mechanical and self-healing properties, functional hydrogels offer a wealth of insights and opportunities for the fabrication of electroluminescent devices that can be easily integrated into wearable electronics for various applications. Various strategies have been developed and adapted to obtain functional hydrogels, and at the same time, high-performance electroluminescent devices have been fabricated based on these functional hydrogels. This review provides a comprehensive overview of various functional hydrogels that have been used for the development of electroluminescent devices. It also highlights some challenges and future research prospects for hydrogel-based electroluminescent devices.

Valorization of Banana Peel Using Carbonization: Potential Use in the Sustainable Manufacturing of Flexible Supercapacitors

Sustainable and environmentally friendly activated carbon from biomass materials is proposed to produce supercapacitors from banana peels and has the potential to replace the non-sustainable and hazardous process from either graphite or/and fossil fuels. In order to determine the potential of using banana peel for supercapacitor application, raw banana peel, a bio-waste, was activated both mechanically and chemically to observe the real differences. The sample was activated at 700 °C and chemically activated using KOH. Characterization of activated banana peel was performed using FTIR, DLS, TGA and XRD analytical equipment. FTIR analysis revised the presence of hydroxyl, carbonyl and aromatic compounds on a banana peel cellulose-based carbon. The TGA results proved that 700 °C could be sufficient to totally carbonize banana peel. DLS clearly showed a strong difference between the carbonized and KOH-activated material in particle size distribution. Meanwhile, surface area analysis using BET displayed an increase from 553.862 m²/g to 565.024 m²/g BET in surface area (SBET) when carbon was activated using KOH with a nitrogen isotherm at 77.350 K. Specific capacitance was increased from 0.3997 Fg^-1 to 0.821 Fg^-1, suggesting more than a 100% increase in the specific capacity due to KOH activation, as proved by the cyclic voltammetry (CV) curve. The X-ray diffraction results revealed the patterns of activated carbon. The findings demonstrated the feasibility of using banana peel waste as a low-cost and sustainable material for the preparation of flexible supercapacitor batteries.
