Recent Development of Self-Powered Tactile Sensors Based on Ionic Hydrogels

Smart materials for flexible electronics and devices: hydrogel

In recent years, flexible conductive materials have attracted considerable attention for their potential use in flexible energy storage devices, touch panels, sensors, memristors, and other applications. The outstanding flexibility, electricity, and tunable mechanical properties of hydrogels make them ideal conductive materials for flexible electronic devices. Various synthetic strategies have been developed to produce conductive and environmentally friendly hydrogels for high-performance flexible electronics. In this review, we discuss the state-of-the-art applications of hydrogels in flexible electronics, such as energy storage, touch panels, memristor devices, and sensors like temperature, gas, humidity, chemical, strain, and textile sensors, and the latest synthesis methods of hydrogels. Describe the process of fabricating sensors as well. Finally, we discussed the challenges and future research avenues for flexible and portable electronic devices based on hydrogels.

Pullulan-1-Ethyl-3-Methylimidazolium Tetrafluoroborate Composite as a Water-Soluble Active Component of a Vibration Sensor

In recent years, the issue of electronic waste production has gained significant attention. To mitigate the environmental impact of e-waste, one approach under consideration involves the development of biodegradable electronic devices or devices that dissolve in the environment at the end of their life cycle. This study presents results related to the creation of a sensor that effectively addresses both criteria. The device was constructed using a composite material formed by impregnating a pullulan membrane (a biodegradable water-soluble biopolymer) with 1-Ethyl-3-Methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (a water-soluble ionic liquid) and coating the product with a conductive silver-based varnish. Capitalizing on the piezoionic effect, the device has demonstrated functionality as a vibration sensor with a sensitivity of approximately 5.5 × 10-5 V/mm and a resolution of about 1 mm. The novelty of this study lies in the unique combination of materials. Unlike the use of piezoelectric materials, this combination allows for the production of a device that does not require an external potential difference generator to function properly as a sensor. Furthermore, the combination of a biopolymer, such as pullulan, and an ionic liquid, both readily soluble in water, in creating an active electronic component represents an innovation in the field of vibration sensors.

Electrochemical Wearable Biosensors and Bioelectronic Devices Based on Hydrogels: Mechanical Properties and Electrochemical Behavior

Hydrogel-based wearable electrochemical biosensors (HWEBs) are emerging biomedical devices that have recently received immense interest. The exceptional properties of HWEBs include excellent biocompatibility with hydrophilic nature, high porosity, tailorable permeability, the capability of reliable and accurate detection of disease biomarkers, suitable device-human interface, facile adjustability, and stimuli responsive to the nanofiller materials. Although the biomimetic three-dimensional hydrogels can immobilize bioreceptors, such as enzymes and aptamers, without any loss in their activities. However, most HWEBs suffer from low mechanical strength and electrical conductivity. Many studies have been performed on emerging electroactive nanofillers, including biomacromolecules, carbon-based materials, and inorganic and organic nanomaterials, to tackle these issues. Non-conductive hydrogels and even conductive hydrogels may be modified by nanofillers, as well as redox species. All these modifications have led to the design and development of efficient nanocomposites as electrochemical biosensors. In this review, both conductive-based and non-conductive-based hydrogels derived from natural and synthetic polymers are systematically reviewed. The main synthesis methods and characterization techniques are addressed. The mechanical properties and electrochemical behavior of HWEBs are discussed in detail. Finally, the prospects and potential applications of HWEBs in biosensing, healthcare monitoring, and clinical diagnostics are highlighted.

Emerging Functional Polymer Composites for Tactile Sensing

In recent years, extensive research has been conducted on the development of high-performance flexible tactile sensors, pursuing the next generation of highly intelligent electronics with diverse potential applications in self-powered wearable sensors, human-machine interactions, electronic skin, and soft robotics. Among the most promising materials that have emerged in this context are functional polymer composites (FPCs), which exhibit exceptional mechanical and electrical properties, enabling them to be excellent candidates for tactile sensors. Herein, this review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in FPCs-based tactile sensors, including the fundamental principle, the necessary property parameter, the unique device structure, and the fabrication process of different types of tactile sensors. Examples of FPCs are elaborated with a focus on miniaturization, self-healing, self-cleaning, integration, biodegradation, and neural control. Furthermore, the applications of FPC-based tactile sensors in tactile perception, human-machine interaction, and healthcare are further described. Finally, the existing limitations and technical challenges for FPCs-based tactile sensors are briefly discussed, offering potential avenues for the development of electronic products.
