Evaluating Spatial Regression-Informed Cokriging of Metals in Soils near Abandoned Mines in Bumpus Cove, Tennessee, USA

Floodplain morphology influences arsenic and antimony spatial distribution in a seasonal acid sulfate soil wetland

Arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) often co-occur in floodplain depositional environments that are contaminated by legacy mining activities. However, the distribution of As and Sb throughout floodplains is not uniform, adding complexity and expense to management or remediation processes. Identifying floodplain morphology predictor variables that help quantify and explain As and Sb spatial distribution on floodplains is useful for management and remediation. We developed As and Sb risk maps estimating concentration and availability at a coastal floodplain wetland impacted by upper-catchment mining. Significant predictors of As and Sb concentrations included i) distance from distributary channel-wetland intersection and ii) elevation. Distance from channel explained 53 % (P < 0.01) and 28 % (P < 0.01), while elevation explained 42 % (P < 0.01) and 47 % (P < 0.01) of the variability in near-total Sb and As respectively. As had a higher extractability than Sb across all tested soil extractions, suggesting that As is more environmentally available. As and Sb dry mass estimates to a depth of 0.1 m scaled to the lower coastal Macleay floodplain ranged from 113-192 tonnes and 14-24 tonnes respectively. Landscape-scale modelling of metalloid distribution, informed by morphology variables, presented here may be a useful framework for the development of risk maps in other regions impacted by contaminated upper-catchment sediments.

Study of geochemical features of soils on the territory of an abandoned coal mining area using geoinformation technologies

The article describes the results of a study of the geochemical features of soils on the territory of an abandoned mining area. The Kizel coal basin (Russia) is of particular interest for studying the consequences of technogenic and post-technogenic transformation of the natural environment. The study of the soil as a deposit medium made it possible to identify geochemical indicators of the negative impact. Such a detailed study of the distribution of chemical elements in this area was conducted for the first time. Geoinformation system and maps with interpolation were created to study the spatial distribution of metals and metalloids in soils. Umbric Retisols Abruptic and Haplic Retisols Abruptic soils are common in the territory. Sampling for geochemical testing was carried out from two horizons: humus and podzolic. Sampling from two depths made it possible to identify elements that continue to be contaminated at the time of the study. A total of 103 sample plots were established in the study area. The results obtained were compared with the background of the natural region of the Western Urals to identify the contribution of technogenesis. As a result, the coefficients of concentration and dispersion of chemical elements were calculated. Due to this, elements were identified, the accumulation of which occurs on the territory of the Kizelovsky coal basin. To identify the current and accumulated pollution, the ratio between the humus and podzolic horizons was calculated. As a result, it was found that at the moment in the humus horizon in some areas there is a high accumulation of Co, Mn, Ni and Sr. The geochemical series of the territory for the humus and podzolic horizons was obtained: Fe > Ti > Mn > Sr > Cr > V > Zn > Ni > Co > Pb > As. Data on the geochemical specificity of the territory of the Kizel coal basin have been obtained. The created geoinformation database reflects the physical and chemical properties of soils, metals and metalloids content, dispersion and accumulation coefficients, coefficients of the ratio of the humus and podzolic horizon. Based on it, it is possible to obtain data on the geochemical features of the territory, geoecological characteristics, spatial distribution of metals and metalloids and identification of pollution sources. Co (24 ± 2.8 mg/kg), Mn (1100 ± 155 mg/kg), Ni (69 ± 9.3 mg/kg), As (10 ± 3.5 mg/kg), Cr (178 ± 20 mg/kg), Zn (80 ± 7.8 mg/kg) and Sr (221 ± 26 mg/kg) accumulate in the humus horizon. Co (24 ± 1.8 mg/kg), Mn (1000 ± 103 mg/kg), Ni (60 ± 6.4 mg/kg) and Cr (153 ± 15.2 mg/kg) accumulate in the podzolic horizon.

Conceptual methodological framework for the resilience of biogeochemical services to heavy metals stress

The idea of linking stressors, services providing units (SPUs), and ecosystem services (ES) is ubiquitous in the literature, although is currently not applied in areas contaminated with heavy metals (HMs), This integrative literature review introduces the general form of a deterministic conceptual model of the cross-scale effect of HMs on biogeochemical services by SPUs with a feedback loop, a cross-scale heuristic concept of resilience, and develops a method for applying the conceptual model. The objectives are 1) to identify the clusters of existing research about HMs effects on ES, biodiversity, and resilience to HMs stress, 2) to map the scientific fields needed for the conceptual model's implementation, identify institutional constraints for inter-disciplinary cooperation, and propose solutions to surpass them, 3) to describe how the complexity of the cause-effect chain is reflected in the research hypotheses and objectives and extract methodological consequences, and 4) to describe how the conceptual model can be implemented. A nested analysis by CiteSpace of a set of 16,176 articles extracted from the Web of Science shows that at the highest level of data aggregation there is a clear separation between the topics of functional traits, stoichiometry, and regulating services from the typical issues of the literature about HMs, biodiversity, and ES. Most of the resilience to HMs stress agenda focuses on microbial communities. General topics such as the biodiversity-ecosystem function relationship in contaminated areas are no longer dominant in the current research, as well as large-scale problems like watershed management. The number of Web of Science domains that include the analyzed articles is large (26 up to 87 domains with at least ten articles, depending on the sub-set), but thirteen domains account for 70-80% of the literature. The complexity of approaches regarding the cause-effect chain, the stressors, the biological and ecological hierarchical level and the management objectives was characterized by a detailed analysis of 60 selected reviews and 121 primary articles. Most primary articles approach short causal chains, and the number of hypotheses or objectives by article tends to be low, pointing out the need for portfolios of complementary research projects in coherent inter-disciplinary programs and innovation ecosystems to couple the ES and resilience problems in areas contaminated with HMs. One provides triggers for developing innovation ecosystems, examples of complementary research hypotheses, and an example of technology transfer. Finally one proposes operationalizing the conceptual methodological model in contaminated socio-ecological systems by a calibration, a sensitivity analysis, and a validation phase.
