Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the microvasculature during remission in patients with pars planitis (PP-IU) and multiple sclerosis-associated intermediate uveitis (MS-IU) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A). METHODS Single-center, descriptive, case-control study was conducted. Adult patients (≥16 years) with IU in remission (PP-IU and MS-IU) and healthy age-sex matched healthy controls (HC) were enrolled to the study. Demographic/clinical features, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), ocular findings, neurological symptoms and preferred treatments were recorded. The presence of cystoid macular edema (CME) during follow-up was recorded. All IU patients in remission and HC subjects were scanned with OCT-A. Foveal avascular zone (FAZ) areas of superficial and deep capillary plexus (SCP/DCP) and vascular densities of SCP, DCP and choriocapillaris were obtained from OCT-A and compared between the groups. RESULTS Sixty-nine eyes of 37 IU patients in remission and 20 HC were included (44 eyes/23 patients in PP-IU, 25/14 in MS-IU, 40/20 in HC). No statistically significant differences were observed in terms of demographic or clinical characteristics of the patients. The vascular density in the SCP was significantly reduced in the PP-IU and MS-IU groups compared to the HC group (p < .05). Nevertheless, there were no significant changes in any of the OCTA parameters between the IU groups. Uveitis duration was found to be correlated with enlargement of the FAZ area in PP-IU (p = .039). CONCLUSION OCTA may not be useful in differentiating between PP-IU and MS-IU. Nevertheless, the primary implication in SCP potentially elucidates the pathogenesis of these two subtypes of IU, which are characterized by a shared pathogenesis. The monitoring of the FAZ area in the PP-IU group is valuable in terms of chronicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system with neuroaxonal damage. It is the principal driver of non-traumatic disability in young adults. Visual symptoms are common and optic neuritis (ON) may be the revealing feature in up to 30% of cases. Structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) represents a biomarker of central nervous system neurodegeneration in MS. OCT-angiography (OCT-A) is a noninvasive tool allowing the study of retinal vasculature and the detection of microvascular damage in neuro-retinal diseases. In this study, we aimed to assess structural and microvascular retinal changes in patients with MS with and without ON and to correlate the findings with visual function and MS disability. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study including patients diagnosed with MS according to the 2017 McDonald criteria. All patients underwent complete neurological examination with evaluation of the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and the Multiple Sclerosis Severity Score (MSSS) and an ophthalmological examination including OCT and OCT-A. Patients were compared with age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. The primary endpoints were assessment of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, ganglion cell layer (GCL+), and ganglion cell complex (GCL++) thicknesses on OCT. Vascular densities in the superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), and choriocapillaris (CC) were assessed on OCT-A, as well as central avascular zone (CAZ) parameters, lacunarity and fractal dimension. RESULTS A total of 160 MS eyes with and without a previous history of ON and 64 age- and gender-matched healthy eyes were analyzed. Among 160 eyes with MS, 69 had a history of ON. We observed a decrease in RNFL and GCL++ thickness in all 12 quadrants in MS patients when compared to healthy controls. Multivariate analysis by linear regression noted a significant correlation for temporal GCL++ and inferonasal RNFL thickness that were decreased in the MS group. A greater decrease in retinal layers thickness was identified in MS patients with a history of ON. On OCT-A, vascular density in (SCP) was significantly reduced in the MS group (P<0.002). A significant correlation between RNFL thickness and retinal vascular density was found but only in less than half of the hourly quadrants. A significant correlation was noted between visual acuity and CC density (P<0.0001). We also noted an inverse correlation between EDSS scores and CC density (P=0.02 and r=-0.275) and between MSSS and RNFL/GCL++ thicknesses. CONCLUSIONS RNFL and GCL++ layers were thinner in MS patients with a history of ON and were reversely correlated with disease severity. Moreover, retinal vascular changes were observed in MS even in eyes without ON, and CC was reversely correlated with visual function and current disability. Thus, structural OCT coupled with OCT-A could represent a noninvasive and dynamic biomarker of MS severity and progression.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There are no reports in the literature studying the possible relationship between Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and optic nerve involvement in multiple sclerosis (MS). The aim of our study was to analyze the association between EBV antibodies titres and optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) quantitative parameters. METHODS We conducted a retrospective study. The study included 98 eyes of 49 patients with MS. Years of MS duration, relapse count, history of optic neuritis (ON), and immunoglobulin (Ig) G antibodies to the EBV viral capsid antigen (VCA) were recorded from each patient. Also, OCT analysis (including retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness) and OCTA analysis (including perfusion density (PD) and flux index (FI) of the radial peripapillary capillary plexus) were performed in each participant. RESULTS No significant associations were observed between anti-EBV antibody levels and OCT or OCTA parameters (p > 0,05). Correlation analysis between OCT and OCTA measurements showed a significant positive correlation between RNFL thickness and GCIPL thickness with peripapillary PD and FI (p < 0,035). Subgroup analysis revealed a significant diminution of RNFL thickness, GCIPL thickness and peripapillary PD and FI (p < 0,05) in the ON group. CONCLUSION We were unable to demonstrate a significant association between anti-EBV VCA IgG antibody titres and OCT or OCTA parameters. Nonetheless, further longitudinal studies are needed to explore the possible association of EBV with optic nerve involvement in MS.

Abstract
PURPOSES The aim of this study was to evaluate the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), choroidal layer, inner plexiform layer (IPL), and ganglion cell layer (GCL) in patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS In this study, we measured the thickness of the RNFL, GCL, IPL, and choroidal thickness using a spectral optical coherence tomography (OCT) device and we compared the results between the children diagnosed with ASD and healthy controls. Correlation between the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) and the OCT data was evaluated. RESULTS Both ASD and control group consisted of 40 subjects (30 males and 10 females). Of the children in the ASD group, 29 had normal intelligence and 11 had mild intellectual disability (MID). The mean age of patients in the ASD group and control groups were 9.77 ± 3.37 years and 9.85 ± 3.97 years (p = 0.928). There was a statistically significant difference between the ASD group and the control group in the nasal and nasal-superior sectors of the RNFL layers in the left eye when all the lower layers of RNFL were assessed. In both eyes, the children with ASD had considerably lower mean choroidal thicknesses than the controls. When compared to the controls, the GCL and IPL volumes in the individuals with ASD were considerably lower in both eyes. Compared to the MID group, the left GCL volume of the nasal-inferior group was noticeably higher. A significant correlation was found between CARS scores and left GCL left IPL. CONCLUSIONS In contrast to RNFL in the ASD group, significant reductions in IPL, GCL, and choroidal thickness were observed in both eyes. It is thought that GCL may be a much more important biomarker than RNFL in terms of representing the structural deterioration in the brain. In addition, these results may form the basis for a new perspective on the use of OCT for the diagnosis and clinical course of autism.

Abstract

This paper reviews the main biomarkers identified through Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCT-A) involved in the development and progression of MS and investigates the role it may have in detecting changes to the central nervous system (CNS).

Abstract
Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) is a relatively new imaging technique in ophthalmology for the visualization of the retinal microcirculation and other tissues of the human eye. This review paper aims to describe the basic definitions and principles of OCT and OCTA in the most straightforward possible language without complex mathematical and engineering analysis. This is done to help health professionals of various disciplines improve their understanding of OCTA and design further clinical research more efficiently. First, the basic technical principles of OCT and OCTA and related terminology are described. Then, a list of OCTA advantages and disadvantages, with a special reference to blood flow quantification limitations. Finally, an updated list of the basic hardware and software specifications of some of the commercially available OCTA devices is presented.

Abstract
Our purpose was to investigate changes to the retina in multiple sclerosis (MS) using established and novel modes of retinal image acquisition and analysis. 72 participants with MS and 80 healthy volunteers underwent retinal scanning with optical coherence tomography (OCT) and ultra-widefield (UWF) scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO), over a two-year period. Changes in retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness, macular volume and retinal blood vessel diameter were measured and parameters were then tested for associations with MS. Measurements from OCT showed that individuals with MS had a thinner RNFL and reduced macular volume when compared to healthy volunteers. On UWF images, participants with MS had reduced arterial widths in the inferior nasal quadrant of both eyes and reduced venous widths in the inferior nasal quadrant of right eyes. Longitudinal analysis showed that participants with MS had an accelerated annual rate of RNFL thinning in several regions of the retina. In conclusion, the assessment of OCT showed thinning of the RNFL and macula in concordance with previous reports on MS, while analysis of blood vessels in the retinal periphery from UWF-SLO images revealed novel changes.
