Academic Motivation of Indonesian University Students: Relationship with Self-Compassion and Resilience

Effect of Parenting Style, attachment to parents and self-compassion on the occurrence and recovery motivation for non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents

Background

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a worldwide mental health problem that deserves thorough investigation. This study aims to explore the effect of parenting styles, attachment to parents, and self-compassion on the occurrence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior in adolescents and whether these factors influence their recovery motivation.

Methods

A total of 132 adolescents who had engaged in NSSI within the last year and 72 adolescents who had never engaged in NSSI were recruited from the Shenzhen Kangning Hospital and from primary and secondary schools and communities. Differences in the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA), Egma Minn av. Bardndosnauppforstran (EMBU), and Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) of participants were compared. A binary logistic model was established to measure the odds ratios of these variables on the occurrence of NSSI. In the NSSI adolescent sample, separate binary logistic models were created with NSSI impulse inhibition, NSSI resistance activity, and NSSI recovery motivation as dependent variables and with parenting styles, attachment to parents, and self-compassion as independent variables.

Results

Compared with adolescents with no NSSI behavior, those who had engaged in NSSI within the past year had higher scores on the HAMD, as well as higher EMBU-negative father parental behavior (punishment, excessive interference, rejection, and overprotection), EMBU-negative mother parental behavior (excessive interference, rejection, and punishment), and SCS negative self-compassion scores. Moreover, adolescents with NSSI had lower EMBU-father emotional warmth, EMBU-mother emotional warmth, IPPA-attachment to father, IPPA-attachment to mother, and SCS positive self-compassion scores. Current depressive symptoms and maternal punishment are risk factors for NSSI in adolescents, while positive self-compassion was a protective factor. Positive self-compassion can positively predict NSSI impulse inhibition, NSSI resistance activity, and NSSI recovery motivation. However, we unexpectedly found that the father's emotional warmth negatively predicts NSSI resistance activity.

Conclusion

This study found that positive self-compassion has a significant impact on the prevention of and recovery from NSSI behavior in adolescents.

Intrinsic Factors and Psychological Safety Among Nursing Students During Simulation-Based Learning-A Correlational Design

INTRODUCTION

Well-designed simulation-based learning (SBL) experiences enhance students' self-confidence, self-efficacy, clinical judgment, and psychomotor skill development. An emerging concept in SBL research is psychological safety. There is currently no research on factors influencing psychological safety specifically related to the SBL environment, nor is there any literature found to determine whether intrinsic student characteristic, such as self-compassion and resilience, contributes to SBL learning outcomes. The aim of this study is to determine whether there is a relationship between nursing students' intrinsic characteristics (self-compassion, resilience, and anxiety sensitivity) and their psychological safety.

METHODS

Bivariate correlation was used to examine associations among sociodemographic variables and outcome variables. Multiple regression was used to determine the predictive nature of the sociodemographic variables. Assumptions for variables in multiple regression models were tested (normal distribution, heteroscedasticity, multicollinearity). All data were analyzed in SPSS, Version 28. The P value of significance was set at 0.05 for all analyses.

RESULTS

Most of the 118 participants were non-Hispanic (89%), White (65%), and females (95%). Results of the demographic bivariate analysis revealed no significant differences among this diverse group or semester in the curriculum for psychological safety. The multiple regression found self-compassion (β = 29, P = 0.004), anxiety sensitivity (β = -0.16, P = 0.049), and resilience (β = 0.26, P = 0.004) predict psychological safety.

CONCLUSIONS

The importance of creating a psychologically safe learning environment has been recognized as essential to best practices. Our findings suggest that an understanding of student characteristics that impact their perception of psychological safety will allow educators to develop strategies to better support learners in the simulation environment.

Relationship between Self-Compassion and Uneasiness about the Professional Future among Dental Hygiene Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

Purpose

To examine the self-compassion of dental hygiene students in Japan and the correlation between their self-compassion and uneasiness about their professional future.

Methods

This study was conducted from May to September 2021. Students were invited from three colleges and one university in Fukuoka Prefecture to take the survey. Participants provided information regarding demographic variables (e.g., gender and year of study) and answered six questions regarding feeling uneasy about one's future, matters of learning, and what might happen after graduation. Self-compassion was assessed using the Japanese short version of the self-compassion scale (SCS), with the positive- and negative-SCS subdomains. Resilience was measured using the bidimensional resilience scale with the subdomains of innate and acquired resilience. For the statistical analysis, participants were divided into the "yes" group, where members felt uneasy and the "no" group, where members did not feel uneasy.

Results

Data were obtained from 464 participants (response rate: 96.3%). The scores of total-, positive-, and negative-SCS were 36 (12-56), 18 (6-29), and 19 (6-30), respectively; 55.2% of students felt uneasy about their professional future. There was a statistically significant difference in scores for positive- and negative-SCS and innate resilience between the "yes" and "no" groups. Binomial logistic regression analysis revealed that when negative-SCS increased by one point, the risk of feeling uneasy about one's professional future was 1.12 times higher (95% confidence interval: 1.07-1.17) after adjusting for resilience and the answers to the remaining five questions.

Conclusion

Our findings suggest that the negative factor of self-compassion is related to increasing the risk of feeling uneasy about one's professional future as a dental hygienist.
