Developing a Low-Cost IoT-Based Remote Cardiovascular Patient Monitoring System in Cameroon

Design and development of patient health tracking, monitoring and big data storage using Internet of Things and real time cloud computing

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, social isolation and quarantine have become commonplace across the world. IoT health monitoring solutions eliminate the need for regular doctor visits and interactions among patients and medical personnel. Many patients in wards or intensive care units require continuous monitoring of their health. Continuous patient monitoring is a hectic practice in hospitals with limited staff; in a pandemic situation like COVID-19, it becomes much more difficult practice when hospitals are working at full capacity and there is still a risk of medical workers being infected. In this study, we propose an Internet of Things (IoT)-based patient health monitoring system that collects real-time data on important health indicators such as pulse rate, blood oxygen saturation, and body temperature but can be expanded to include more parameters. Our system is comprised of a hardware component that collects and transmits data from sensors to a cloud-based storage system, where it can be accessed and analyzed by healthcare specialists. The ESP-32 microcontroller interfaces with the multiple sensors and wirelessly transmits the collected data to the cloud storage system. A pulse oximeter is utilized in our system to measure blood oxygen saturation and body temperature, as well as a heart rate monitor to measure pulse rate. A web-based interface is also implemented, allowing healthcare practitioners to access and visualize the collected data in real-time, making remote patient monitoring easier. Overall, our IoT-based patient health monitoring system represents a significant advancement in remote patient monitoring, allowing healthcare practitioners to access real-time data on important health metrics and detect potential health issues before they escalate.

Survey on Energy Harvesting for Biomedical Devices: Applications, Challenges and Future Prospects for African Countries

Self-powered biomedical devices, which are the new vision of Internet Of Things (IOT) healthcare, are facing many technical and application challenges. Many research works have reported biomedical devices and self-powered applications for healthcare, along with various strategies to improve the monitoring time of self-powered devices or to eliminate the dependence on electrochemical batteries. However, none of these works have especially assessed the development and application of healthcare devices in an African context. This article provides a comprehensive review of self-powered devices in the biomedical research field, introduces their applications for healthcare, evaluates their status in Africa by providing a thorough review of existing biomedical device initiatives and available financial and scientific cooperation institutions in Africa for the biomedical research field, and highlights general challenges for implementing self-powered biomedical devices and particular challenges related to developing countries. The future perspectives of the aforementioned research field are provided, as well as an architecture for improving this research field in developing countries.

Adaptive Autonomous Protocol for Secured Remote Healthcare Using Fully Homomorphic Encryption (AutoPro-RHC)

The outreach of healthcare services is a challenge to remote areas with affected populations. Fortunately, remote health monitoring (RHM) has improved the hospital service quality and has proved its sustainable growth. However, the absence of security may breach the health insurance portability and accountability act (HIPAA), which has an exclusive set of rules for the privacy of medical data. Therefore, the goal of this work is to design and implement the adaptive Autonomous Protocol (AutoPro) on the patient's remote healthcare (RHC) monitoring data for the hospital using fully homomorphic encryption (FHE). The aim is to perform adaptive autonomous FHE computations on recent RHM data for providing health status reporting and maintaining the confidentiality of every patient. The autonomous protocol works independently within the group of prime hospital servers without the dependency on the third-party system. The adaptiveness of the protocol modes is based on the patient's affected level of slight, medium, and severe cases. Related applications are given as glucose monitoring for diabetes, digital blood pressure for stroke, pulse oximeter for COVID-19, electrocardiogram (ECG) for cardiac arrest, etc. The design for this work consists of an autonomous protocol, hospital servers combining multiple prime/local hospitals, and an algorithm based on fast fully homomorphic encryption over the torus (TFHE) library with a ring-variant by the Gentry, Sahai, and Waters (GSW) scheme. The concrete-ML model used within this work is trained using an open heart disease dataset from the UCI machine learning repository. Preprocessing is performed to recover the lost and incomplete data in the dataset. The concrete-ML model is evaluated both on the workstation and cloud server. Also, the FHE protocol is implemented on the AWS cloud network with performance details. The advantages entail providing confidentiality to the patient's data/report while saving the travel and waiting time for the hospital services. The patient's data will be completely confidential and can receive emergency services immediately. The FHE results show that the highest accuracy is achieved by support vector classification (SVC) of 88% and linear regression (LR) of 86% with the area under curve (AUC) of 91% and 90%, respectively. Ultimately, the FHE-based protocol presents a novel system that is successfully demonstrated on the cloud network.
