Abstract
Although much interest has been focused on the role of selenium (Se) in plant nutrition over the last 20 years, the influences of organic selenium (selenomethionine; Se-Met) and inorganic selenium (potassium selenite; Se-K) on the growth and physiological characters of cadmium (Cd)-stressed Glycine max L.) seedlings have not yet been studied. In this study, the impacts of Se-Met or Se-K on the growth, water physiological parameters (gaseous exchange and leaf water content), photosynthetic and antioxidant capacities, and hormonal balance of G. max seedlings grown under 1.0 mM Cd stress were studied. The results showed that 30 μM Se-K up-regulates water physiological parameters, photosynthetic indices, antioxidant systems, enzymatic gene expression, total antioxidant activity (TAA), and hormonal balance. In addition, it down-regulates levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS; superoxide free radicals and hydrogen peroxide), oxidative damage (malondialdehyde content as an indicator of lipid peroxidation and electrolyte leakage), Cd translocation factor, and Cd content of Cd-stressed G. max seedlings. These positive findings were in favor of seedling growth and development under Cd stress. However, 50 μM Se-Met was more efficient than 30 μM Se-K in promoting the above-mentioned parameters of Cd-stressed G. max seedlings. From the current results, we conclude Se-Met could represent a promising strategy to contribute to the development and sustainability of crop production on soils contaminated with Cd at a concentration of up to 1.0 mM. However, further work is warranted to better understand the precise mechanisms of Se-Met action under Cd stress conditions.

Abstract
Introduction The reduction of N supplied combined with the use of biostimulants can be an efficient strategy that allows sustainable agriculture to achieve better economic, nutritional and environmental goals without reducing production. Moreover, the industrial processing of celery generates large amounts of waste. Therefore the purpose of this study was improve crop management strategies to reduce nitrate pollution while turning crop waste into value-added products for others sectors. Methods Consequently, in this work twelve treatments were examined: three N nitrogen content in the nutrient solution (100% control, 60%, and 30%) combined with the inoculation of the roots with Azotobacter salinestris, and foliar application selenium solution (8 μM, Na2SeO4). The celery parts from plants grown under limited N dose showed a higher antioxidant activity and TPC (total phenolic compounds) content. Results and discussion The antioxidant activity increased 28% in leaves and 41% in by-products and TPC improved 27% in leaves and 191% in by-products respect to the control. Besides, a significant reduction of β-carotene content (56%, 11% and 43% in petioles, leaves and by-products respect to the control, respectively) was obtained in plants fed with restricted dose of N. The catalase activity was not affected by N dose. The inoculation of the plants with Azotobacter, together with a reduced N dose, achieved a greater accumulation of all the parameters studied. This accumulation was maximum when Se was applied to the leaves compared with the control and depending on the celery part: TPC (121-450%); antioxidant activity (60-68%), of catalase activity (59% - 158%), and of pigments content (50-90%). These findings can boost the valorization of celery by-products as excellent source of bioactive compounds.

Abstract
Lilium lancifolium Thunb (L. lancifolium) is an important medicinal and edible plant with outstanding functionality for selenium (Se) biofortification. However, the molecular response of L. lancifolium to exogenous Se has not been fully elucidated. In this study, the effects of different levels of Se on L. lancifolium growth and quality were explored by transcriptome, metabolome and biochemical analyses. The results showed that the total Se and organic Se content in L. lancifolium bulbs increased with increasing Se dosage (0-8.0 mmol/L). Moreover, Se stimulated the growth of L. lancifolium at low level (2.0 mmol/L) but showed an inhibitory effect at high levels (≥4.0 mmol/L). Metabolomic and biochemical analyses revealed that the bulb weight and the content of amino acid, soluble sugar, and soluble protein were significantly increased in the 2.0 mmol/L Se treatment compared with those in the control (0 mmol/L Se). Transcriptome and metabolome analyses revealed that the significant upregulation of the GPD1, GPAT and ADPRM genes promoted glycerophospholipid accumulation. Additionally, the significantly upregulated glyA and downregulated asnB, nadB, thrA and SAT genes coordinate to the regulation of amino acid biosynthesis. The significantly upregulated SUS, bgl B, BAM, and SGA1 genes were involved in soluble sugar accumulation under Se treatment. In summary, this study identified the optimal Se concentration (2.0 mmol/L), which significantly improved the growth and nutritional quality of L. lancifolium and contributed to understanding the combined effects of Se treatment on the expression of genes and the accumulation of metabolites in L. lancifolium bulbs.

Abstract
Due to climate change and exacerbated population growth, the search for new sustainable strategies that allow for greater food productivity and that provide greater nutritional quality has become imperative. One strategy for addressing this problem is the combined use of fertilization with a reduced dose of nitrogen and biostimulants. Celery processing produces a large amount of waste with its concomitant pollution. Therefore, it is necessary to address the valorization of its byproducts. Our results revealed reductions in the biomass, Na, P, Mn, B, sugars, and proteins in the byproducts and increased lipid peroxidation, Fe (all celery parts), and K (byproducts) when the N supplied was reduced. Plants inoculated with Azotobacter salinestris obtained a greater biomass, a higher accumulation of K (byproducts), a build-up of sugars and proteins, reduced concentrations of P, Cu, Mn, B, Fe (petioles), and Zn (byproducts), and reduced lipid peroxidation. The application of Se at 8 μM reinforced the beneficial effect obtained after inoculation with Azotobacter salinestris. In accordance with our results, edible celery parts are recommended as an essential ingredient in the daily diet. Furthermore, the valorization of celery byproducts with health-promoting purposes should be considered.

Abstract
Rice is an important food in the world, and selenium (Se) is a necessary trace element for the human. So the effects of selenomethionine (SeMet) on photosynthetic capacity, yield and quality of rice at different stages were studied. The results show that SeMet can increase the Ppotosynthetic capacity of rice leaves during each growth stage, the effect of 5 mg/L SeMet treatment was the most significant. At the mature stage of rice, SeMet significantly increased rice yield and total plant biomass, 7.5and 5 mg/L SeMet treatments had the most significant effects, respectively. In addition, SeMet significantly improved the content of Se and processing quality of rice, decreased chalkiness, inhibited amylose synthesis, and optimized flavor. The above indices showed the best results after treatment with 5 mg/L SeMet. It is hoped that this study will provide a theoretical basis for the application of organic selenium in rice production.

Crosstalk between Selenium and Sulfur Is Associated with Changes in Primary Metabolism in Lettuce Plants Grown under Se and S Enrichment. PLANTS 2022; 11:plants11070927. Abstract
This study investigated the beneficial effects of selenium (Se) and sulfur (S) enrichment on the primary metabolism in butterhead lettuce. The plants were treated with three levels of Se via foliar application in the presence of two S levels in the nutrient solution under greenhouse conditions. The lettuce plants that were exposed to the lower selenate level (1.3 μM) in combination with the adequate and high S supplies (1 and 2 mM, respectively) accumulated 38.25 ± 0.38 µg Se g−1 DM and 47.98 ± 0.68 µg Se g−1 DM, respectively. However, a dramatic increase in the Se concentration (122.38 ± 5.07 µg Se g−1 DM, and 146.71 ± 5.43 µg Se g−1 DM, respectively) was observed in the lettuce heads that were exposed to the higher selenate foliar application (3.8 μM) in response to the varied sulfate concentrations (S1 and S2, respectively). Under higher Se and S supplies in the lettuce plants, the levels of organic acids, including malic acid and citric acid, decreased therein to 25.7 ± 0.5 and 3.9 ± 0.3 mg g−1 DM, respectively, whereas, in the plants that were subjected to adequate S and lower Se fertilization, the malic acid, and citric acid levels significantly increased to 47.3 ± 0.4 and 11.8 ± 0.4 mg g−1 DM, respectively. The two Se levels (1.3 and 3.8 μM) under the S1 conditions also showed higher concentrations of water-soluble sugars, including glucose and fructose (70.8.4 ± 1.1 and 115.0 ± 2.1 mg g−1 DM; and 109.4 ± 2.1 and 161.1 ± 1.0 mg g−1 DM, respectively), compared to the control. As with the glucose and fructose, the amino acids (Asn, Glu, and Gln) exhibited strikingly higher levels (48.7 ± 1.1 μmol g−1 DM) under higher S and Se conditions. The results presented in this report reveal that the “crosstalk” between Se and S exhibited a unique synergistic effect on the responses to the amino acids and the soluble sugar biosynthesis under Se and S enrichment. Additionally, the Se-and-S crosstalk could have an important implication on the final nutritional value and quality of lettuce plants.
